I use slide cream. I think oil wears out faster than cream.

I've been using trombotine for freakin EVAR. My first trombone teacher in New York gave me a tube when I was in... 5th grade?
I'm going to be a junior this coming school year, and I still have that same tube of trombotine. That sh*t lasts...
See, the trick is knowing how to apply it right.

The 5 Steps of Lubing Your Slide (as patented by Fr34kt)
1. Use a cloth to THOROUGHLY wipe off any residue on your inner slide.
2. Obtain a pea sized amount of your slide cream and apply it to the stockings only (wide part of the inner slide).
3. One side at a time, put the inner slide back into the outer slide to and work it up and down a few times on both side (this spreads the lube to the inside of your outer slide).
4. Remove the inner slide and wipe it off again (this step is critical to prevent scummification. All the lube you need has already been applied to the inside of your outer slide).
5. Spray the inner slide with water. You're good to go!

Also, you have to make sure you do it often enough. And for cripes sakes keep yer slide wet! *shakes cane* I guess this is why my section calls me obsessed with trombone maintenance...
I have used Slide-o-Mix before, I find that while initially beyond really good, it tends to make my slide scum up. Meh... *shrugs shoulders*

I used trombotine 6th,7th and 8th grade but it just became so much of a hassle when I needed a quick lube job. (Haha, it is to laugh.) I stole slide - o - mix from somewhere and I swear by it now. I very rarely have to re-apply it. Which is great. Maybe the difference is the new trombone. IDK. I used to have a Reynolds that was so nasty and old. I couldn't even get a decent low B flat out of it. Now I have and 88h Conn. I LOVE it.

that's good advice except for number 5 using water on your slide isn't good it will make it rust and it evaporates too fast use valve oil instead and it will be good

The inner slide is made of nickel, and therefore will not rust.
Iron rusts, not nickel (the formula for rust is FeO, not NiO). Believe me, they even sell spray bottles for water specifically to use on your slide. If you're using cream of any kind, spraying your slide with water is a must. Even with Slide-o- Mix, the last step on the bottle is "spray your slide with water."
Also, think of it... Your spit is flying through that slide constantly! Would they really make it out of something that would rust?
lawl, I'm such a nerd. I even asked my teacher to make sure before posting this.

Slide-o-Mix is definitely GOD. The cream that came with my trombone when I got it just sucked so much a** it wasn't funny. So I asked my BD if I could buy a couple bottles of slide-o-mix off of him and he said yes. xd
