Name: Reyalt
Age: 17
Sex: Male (bisexual, leaning towards males)
Craft: Beastcraft
Rank: Apprentice
Physical Description:
Reyalt is on the short side for his age, with a lanky frame free from any excess fat and lightly muscled. His hair is brown and shaggy, and slightly curly when it is wet or the air is humidd. It is always in need of a trim, and in the summer it is usually streaked with lighter brown and gold. He has an angular face, with a long straight nose - but besides this his face is quite welcoming, with a soft mouth, quirked brow, and generally amused and warm eyes. His skin is quite tan, and usually peeling slightly across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose. His eyes are a simple, open grey.
Reyalt typically wears loose trousers, a sleeveless tunic, and a pair of boots - all in light, natural colors. Being superstitious he always wears several woven bracelets, with charms picked up at gathers or from friends and mentors. Both his ears are pierced with small golden hoops. Thanks to the small fame he feels he has won himself through racing, he often tries to carry himself as if he were older - but his maturity level is definitely on par with his age.
Personality:
Generally easygoing, Reyalt nonetheless has a very competitive streak. This does not mean that he wants to win, or loves confrontations - rather, he simply loves the exhilaration of a race itself, regardless of its outcome. His attitude is the very definition of “friendly competition”, and he loves to make friends among those he competes with.
Outside of the races, Reyalt is easy-going and friendly, his competitive streak vanishing with the change in environment. He is not the type to make plans, but nonetheless he'll happily go along with almost any crazy scheme suggested by his friends. Generally, he’s a typical teenage boy. He’s always up for a laugh, enjoys running wild through the marketplace of Ista, and isn’t above catcalling a pretty young woman or two - although his interest leans much more strongly towards boys, a fact that his candidacy is allowing him to recognize.
Reyalt feels slightly out of place in the large communal atmosphere of the Weyr, after having grown up in a small hold and then living alone with his uncle for over a year. Although happy to move as a gang, he is also quick to feel awkward when placed into more intimate social settings, as he is used to the quiet of working with runnerbeasts, where he rarely had to talk. He is therefore often nervous when meeting new people at the Weyr. He is also almost puppyish in his gratefulness, when he is befriended or even given a kind word by those who have grown up in Ista Weyr.
Once he has impressed a dragon, and ascertained his position in the Weyr, his carefree and oft-competitive nature will most likely resurface. As a candidate, however, Reyalt is still all nerves and uncertainties - hopeful that he will make friends and fit in, but not entirely sure of himself for now.
History:
Reyalt grew up in minor hold near Ista, known primarily for its runner breeding. His father worked in the stables, and as a result he grew up around the beasts and was often more comfortable with them than with people. As soon as he could sit a runner his father had him up riding and exercising them.
Reyalt quickly learned how to handle any sort of runner. As he got older he began to show a talent for racing, winning many amateur matches among his friends regardless of the runner he was on. But due to his age, he was for the most part confined to the jobs of mucking stalls, grooming, and cleaning tack.
When he was 14, however, Reyalt got the chance to move to Ista Hold and continue an apprenticeship under his uncle, who took the best runners from Reyalt’s original hold and sold them at much higher prices during Ista’s gathers. There, his young uncle noticed his talent, and began placing him in runner races, to bring attention to his fastest and most willing runners. The world of runner racing was one almost to itself, Reyalt soon found. Fast and dangerous, the safety of young men and women who took part could not be guaranteed, but the potential for fame and wealth kept the riders coming. For this reason Reyalt and his uncle chose not to tell his parents of what they were up to, even as he competed in increasingly intense and dangerous races.
A year into this career, and Reyalt felt like he was on top of the world. He didn’t always win, by any means, but he did well enough that he couldn’t imagine living any other way. However, a greenrider from Ista Weyr searched him shortly after his fifteenth name day, and from then on nothing was certain in his life.
The idea of becoming a candidate, and possibly a dragonrider, hit Reyalt out of the blue. He is still coming to terms with the idea, and can’t even honestly say what his feelings about the whole matter are - although the tendencies that made him a good rider also make him a natural candidate.
Pets: Reyalt won an egg in a particularly high-stakes runner race, at a gather held at Ista Hold, and his uncle let him keep it in reward for many races won. This egg hatched into little Miri. He won her in the interim between the first and second hatching he attended as a candidate. At the time of his second hatching she was a few months old and both lazy and cuddly, still preferring to be carried in a sling or on Reyalt’s shoulders.
Other/Talents: He is good at calming people down and sorting out disputes. He is also, ironically, good at fistfights - but he doesn’t prefer this method of problem solving at all. He likes to swim, and when he is confident and amongst friends he isn't above parading around shirtless.
