(( Author's Note: Please move this thread if it is in the wrong subforum. <3 )) There were not a lot of things that particularly bothered Florian. Back when he was an apprentice, his year mates had tried an awful lot of inventive ways to either embarrass him or cause him to embarrass someone else unintentionally. They had tried sticks, they had tried stones, and as the old child's rhyme went... both did on occasion break his bones. Yet even then he hadn't been bothered by their antics. Long ago he had decided that if he couldn't understand the 'why' of something, then he would either make every possible attempt to understand it, or just move on. This logic applied to both academics and to his social interactions, with mixed success. Academically, he was by far their superior, and he had made no bones about it. When testing time came or a Master asked a question, he did not cow himself so the class would appear uniform. He would instead stand up and be judged right or wrong, and take from that experience what he could. Now while he understood that such behavior made him different, what he could not grasp was why his year mates did not react favorably to the competition. To his understanding (and his life logic) being met with adversity meant striving to better ones self, and he just couldn't fathom the mob rule of dragging down the whole to the lowest common denominator. Whatever the case had been back then, his stance hadn't changed much over the years, and to those who had known, well, they would have been beyond tears at the current sight of him. Yes, finally the universe had found something that actually bothered Florian. And it was this sharding lizard. Blinking whirling bright red eyes, Roco called raucously again.. right in the Journeyman's ear, as they passed near the Lower Caverns. Of course, 'near' was a relative term for a hungry firelizard, since from what Florian could tell the entrance to the Caverns was about two dozen paces off and around the corner. Clapping his hands over his ears, Florian managed to dislodge his brown companion for a moment, until Roco decided to swirl about his head trilling apologetically. That, of course, compounded the ringing in the young Healer's ears until he almost screamed himself. "Roco QUIT IT!"

It had been a few hours before dawn when M'zaji had found himself awake, and staring at the ceiling of his weyr. The rider who he shared his weyr with was still asleep, as was the green that shared Kaedrelath's ledge and sleeping couch. The bluerider tossed and turned for quite some time, before finally throwing in the towel and accepting that he would not be falling back asleep. Taking care to move about the weyr as quietly as possible, M'zaji managed to find clothes, and dress himself, in the dark! The young bluerider moved out onto the ledge where both his blue, and the other rider's green, were curled up and asleep. Kae?, M'zaji gently gave his blue a mental poke to wake him. << You're up early, >> was the blue's sleepy response, though he crooned happily and thrust his muzzle out to receive affection. "Yeah, I know. I couldn't sleep," M'zaji whispered by way of explanation as he hoisted himself onto Kaedrelath's neck. The blue had to first unwind himself from around the small green who shared his ledge, then launch himself into the air and glide downwards to the Weyr Bowl.
Now, M'zaji found himself sitting in the lower caverns with a mug of cold klah and a bowl of soggy cereal. There were a few other people in the cavern with him, but M'zaji sat alone at a table. He preferred it that way. Kaedrelath encouraged his rider to be social, but for the most part, the bluerider spent his time in solitude. He liked the quiet, the peace, the serenity~ but within moments, all that was shattered. From somewhere close to the lower caverns there came a loud yell, a deep male voice. M'zaji didn't recognize the voice, but he assumed that it was someone in the Weyr with a very hungry firelizard. The bluerider was sorely tempted to leave his table and retreat out into the Bowl (it must be close to sun up, right?) but he remained in his seat, slightly curious to see just who it was making all the racket.

Predictably, Roco did not quiet down, and instead reacted to his person's show of temper by squawking even louder the second time around. Florian winced at the continued noise and managed to keep his cool long enough to back track and walk towards the lower cavern. Really, he should have known better then to try and get any work done this early without breakfast for the both of them. Or for Roco really, since Florian had always been an early riser that postponed breakfast until the usual time.
Still, he fervently hoped the Lower Caverns wouldn't be terribly crowded. Bad enough to be dropped here at Ista unceremoniously by H'shan one sevenday ago with barely even a letter of introduction from the Healer Hall and Fort Weyr, but as it was the young journeyman was at some serious loose ends. He hadn't quite gotten around to the kitchen staff yet, and he'd hate to make a bad impression via one ugly, malformed, beyond annoying...
As if he caught the thought, Roco squawked again, and flapped his wings.
...but still very much loved firelizard. Florian amended to himself mentally, sending a trio of bright loving images in Roco's general direction. The brown crooned in response, and rubbed his dainty little head against Florian's cheek. Sighing, Florian rounded the curve into the Caverns and peered around curiously. From what he could see there was not a great deal of people around, and the klah was still brewing somewhere... he could smell it.

While waiting to see the noisemaker, M'zaji's thoughts wandered. He traveled backwards down memory lane, recalling the day he'd arrived at Ista Weyr. The bluerider hadn't been born at the Weyr, but found himself ousted from his home Weyr after graduating from Weyrling Training. The bluerider had found it hard to adjust to a new home, where he knew no one. M'zaji was a quiet, not-quite-reclusive, but shy sort of guy who, honestly, is simply socially awkward. He had made a few acquaintances, but no real friends. Even now, some turns later, M'zaji found himself without anyone he could spend his free time with, laugh with, or just talk to. Looking down into his mug of klah, the bluerider frowned with disappointment to find that steam was no longer rising in slow, lazy curls from the liquid.
"Shards," he muttered, mostly angry with himself for letting the klah just sit on the table and go cold. Not to mention the soggy cereal! "Oh, gross," he muttered with a wrinkled nose, scooping up a spoonful of what was cereal and letting the mush fall into the bowl with a *PLOP!* M'zaji pushed back his chair and stood, making his way towards the back of the cavern where there were hearths to keep soups and stews warm and long, serving tables to hold food on plates, trays, bowls, etc. In a small, clustered group were several pitchers of fresh, hot klah. M'zaji poured himself a generous mug. As he was pouring, he glanced up and saw a rather lost-looking young man. M'zaji thought that he should probably be friendly, and see if the man was indeed lost but... that just wasn't in his character. So, the bluerider made himself busy by filling a plate with a more hearty breakfast~ sausage, eggs, some freshly cut fruit, and NO CEREAL.

Relieved that Roco was at least trying to behave now, Florian ducked towards the back of the Lower Caverns as unobtrusively as he could. He wasn't as lost as he looked, but he definitely felt out of sorts in the strange Cavern after staying in Fort Weyr for so long.
For starters, Fort was no where near as crowded as tiny Ista... the current lack of occupants was a little misleading given the rumors. He'd from H'shan about Ista's overcrowding, and had outright asked the older brownrider what was he thinking to bring yet another mouth to feed to the small Weyr. H'shan had just rumbled something incoherent and told him to get on or get lost. At that point, Florian was well aware that H'shan wouldn't just leave him, so he had allowed himself to be carted off to the unknown like so much baggage.
Sighing again, Florian made a beeline for the klah mugs and the serving tables right behind another man. As with most Weyrs, he could at least count on good cooking, even if his stomach rolled at the thought of eating this early and on plates he hadn't cleaned himself.
"Roco, behave yourself please." he mumbled as an afterthought, remembering the last time he had brought the brown near one of these tables. However, since the firelizard was perched on his shoulder and not directly in his line of sight, the young journeyman missed the look of fascinated curiosity the lizard had for M'zaji's hair as Florian waited to gather his own plate of breakfast.

As he watched the younger man look about the lower caverns, no doubt in search of food for that little brown 'lizard perched on his shoulder, M'zaji battled silently with himself on whether or not he should approach the man and offer some help. The bluerider knew that in order to get the freshest scraps of meat, one had to go directly into the kitchens and speak with a sweet, little old woman named Nejona. Oh, there were several bowls of scraps laid out in the lower caverns for whomever had the need for them, but they weren't replaced until around dinner time. The meat became dried out, and some firelizards were picky. M'zaji didn't have any of the pests, and he was thankful for that.
But as M'zaji stood there and debated with himself, the bluerider didn't notice that Florian had moved into the cavern and made his way towards the back. Looking up from his plate, a now-bewildered M'zaji saw no one standing in the entryway. Shrugging, he turned his attention back to his heaping plate of breakfast food, the aromas from the hot sustenance drifting upwards to tickle his nose and elicit a long, grumbling protest from his stomach- "hurry up and feed me!" was most likely what his stomach said. By now, most of the Weyr was roused and the eating area was starting to fill. As M'zaji turned to face the tables, he found that his previous seat was now occupied. He scanned the cavern, and found that hardly a table was unoccupied... so M'zaji had to settle to try and find the table with the least amount of people. He really didn't want to share his breakfast with a gaggle of gossipy greenriders, or a brood of boasting brown or bronzers.

Moving forward to grab a plate and look around for meatrolls for the fat lizard, Florian leaned forward far enough to give Roco the excuse the lizard needed to take flight. That is, he was 'unbalanced.'
Which he did.
And it also gave Florian a reason to curse in surprise and drop his plate right into the empty mugs, though Florian's maneuver hadn't been as well thought out as Roco's. While Florian's actions managed to destroy not just his plate but three of the clay mugs, the brown had fairly somersaulted through the hair, little pincher type claws extended towards M'zaji's head, while he beat his wings only two or three times to clear the distance...
.. and the rest.
..Well, in retrospect Florian doubted he had enough blood in his body to account for the bright red flush of embarrassed anger that now suffused his face.
"ROCO!"

One moment, M'zaji was standing there with his plate of food, minding his own business while he scanned the tables and chairs for an empty seat. But the next moment, M'zaji didn't know what was going on! Suddenly, his plate was up in the air, his delicious breakfast scattered in the air and left to fall on his head, and whoever might be standing close. Luckily he was not holding a mug of steaming klah, or his face and neck might have been burnt by the steaming liquid.
M'zaji realized, after only a few moments, that something was clinging to his head~ no, trying to devour his head! "Gettitoffme!" He yelled, his words so rushed and panicked that they were strung together and garbled. His hands flew to the back of his head, trying to grasp whatever creature was clinging to tenaciously to his skull, trying to claw and peck its way into his brain (to eat it, perhaps?).

Red faced beyond embarrassment now, Florian gave up even trying to comprehend the why of this situation. After his startled yell, his brain finally processed what Roco had been after...
.. and if possible, he grew even angrier.
"SHARDIT ROCO!" He bellowed, making a grab at the brown's tail while the little lizard merrily nuzzled his way through the blue riders hair. This had always been a thing of the brown's... hair. The silkier and curlier it was.. the better the blasted beast liked it! Back at Fort he'd gotten Florian into no ends of trouble with his Hair Dives, especially with the non-riders. Once he'd even had to do one woman's chores for three sevendays to make up for his lizards behavior.
By Faranth, who knew what kind of trouble it would get him into here!
"LEAVE IT BE!" He yelled again, finally managing to grab the waving tail.

Not too concerned with the why of the situation, M'zaji was more focused on how to get the firelizard out of his hair. The bluerider had calmed down a fair bit since the realization that what was on his head wasn't going to tear his head apart. Lucky for Roco, the young bluerider had been due for a hair cut. His reddish-brown curls were longer than he liked, and his hair was thick~ a great place to burrow and hide!
Well, M'zaji didn't approve of the firelizard's antics. He did not condone the brown's misbehavior. But he wasn't as angry as someone else might be. Sure, his hair was messed up now, but M'zaji could just use that as an excuse to dash off as soon as possible.
"Don't pull his tail like that," M'zaji advised Florian with a weak smile, pointing to the 'lizard still clinging adamantly to his skull. "Every time you pull, he holds on a little tighter."

Still grasping Roco's tail, Florian ground his teeth audibly in frustration. Sharding lizard, just had to go and do this in the middle of the Lower Caverns, with a Dragonrider as the target no less! Roco, for his part, was inordinately pleased with himself, and he showed it by weaving his way to the top of M'zaji's head where he could spread his wings, ignoring the incessant tugging on his tail. Blessedly, (to Florian) no one appeared to be screaming for his head (though he was expecting the afflicted bluerider to do exactly that at any moment) and Roco usually only did this for a moment or two...
...But Florian was surprised by M'zaji's calm instruction, and with a hasty apology, he released Roco's tail. "I'm so sorry about this, you're right though." He added, fixing the brown with a sideways glare. "Hard not to just snatch the bugger off."

It wasn't really how M'zaji had wanted to start off his day, with a firelizard styling his hair. But, he'd manage. The 'lizard atop his head seemed so pleased and proud of himself, the bluerider couldn't help but laugh at the brown's antics. His eyes rolled upwards, to see if he could catch a glimpse of Roco, but found that the brown was sitting in just the right spot making it impossible for the bluerider to see him.
A sideways glance to Florian surprised M'zaji; the young man also seemed surprised? The bluerider wasn't too sure why, and he didn't think on it too long. "It's alright, really. I've dealt with firelizards behaving worse than this," he said, then wanted to bite his tongue. Did he really just tell Florian, to the man's face, that his firelizard behaved poorly? Well, Roco wasn't exactly a gentleman. But nor was it necessary for M'zaji to point that little fact out. The bluerider felt a heat crawling up his neck and into his cheeks and ears, and turned away from Florian to concentrate on brushing some eggs off of his tunic. It wouldn't do for Florian to witness M'zaji blushing so furiously.

Had Florian been able to read the rider's thoughts like his dragon could, he would have likely sagged into the nearest chair in relief. However, he hadn't the foggiest notion of what the rider was thinking, and given the current predicament, what he really wanted right now was to get the blasted brown out of the Caverns as soon as possible! The rider's indication that he had suffered worse under the small pincers of firelizard kind didn't help much, but he could at least appreciate the attempt to put him at ease. "It is not alright, but thank you, and I apologize again for all this." he said, eying the brown. "If you reach up over your head, you should be able to grab his belly and dislodge him..." he added crossly, figuring that if he couldn't dislodge the lizard without pulling out a few hairs, maybe the rider could.
Roco, however, had decided that he liked M'zaji a great deal and in an entirely uncharacteristic turn of events, slithered his way down to the bluerider's shoulder, a light croon escaping his small throat.

M'zaji was hesitant, to say the least, to reach up and pull Roco from atop his head. The brown seemed perfectly content where he was, and the bluerider wasn't too keen on premature balding by way of firelizard claws. "You really think he'll just give up such a prime seat?" M'zaji joked, laughing at his jest. But the bluerider was saved from potentially having to wrestle the brown from his skull; Roco decided that M'zaji's shoulder was a much better perch.
"Well, would ya look at that," the bluerider said with a laugh. He lifted his hand and held it out in front of the brown's nose for him to get acquainted with the bluerider's scent (though, M'zaji should have figured the brown was already comfortable with him). "So, I couldn't help but notice you looked a little lost," M'zaji said with a vague gesture towards the entryway. "Do you need help finding anything?"

"At a loss for words, that was what I was." Florian replied with barely concealed exasperation, eyeing Roco again. "I really can't apologize enough sir..." He trailed off, realizing with further embarrassment that he didn't even know this particular rider's name.
"Forgive me, my name is Florian by the way. The lizard is Roco, and we were both dropped here rather unexpectedly by a rider from Fort to attend the hatchings here." He said, relaxing a little when he saw how calmly the rider was dealing with Roco's behavior. Of course, Florian would probably have nightmares about it later in the evening, but for now he allowed himself to calm a little.
When M'zaji extended his hand, Roco sniffed it obligingly and crooned, but he was not one of those lizards the needed to know who he was clinging too... just that he was clinging to something that he liked. There was particular tunic of Florian's that he abhorred (the outer layer of fabric was very scratchy) so he adamantly refused to go anywhere near it.
