Mid-February, 109

Adrian stood in front of the recruits, noting with satisfaction that they were in perfectly aligned rows as they had been told to do as soon as they arrived. He had not taken roll yet, but he'd check their names as they went through the obstacle course laid out around them, a series of physical barricades surrounded by a oval track lined in white paint. The Drill Sergeant crossed his arms as he stared intently at the silent recruits, making sure they were listening properly. "I will give you instructions once, and only once. If you don't remember the course, then you get to do it all over."

The group was gathered in the middle of the obstacle course, closest to their first obstacle - the low crawl. Adrian pointed towards the start line. "You will be going two at a time together, and the next pair will go after the previous has cleared the first obstacle course. Be sure to stay in your lane the entire time and watch for recruits coming or going from any of the other obstacle courses. If you fail to do an obstacle correctly or run into someone else, you must redo it before you can move onto the next one. Once you're done, come back here and line up to do the obstacle again - you will need to do it three times in total."

"Nightwing will be watching all of you and keeping an eye on your progress. If any of you cheat, he will be on you in the blink of an eye and I assure you, you won't be excused from the obstacle course just because you're bleeding out of your head," Adrian warned the group with a stern glare. Nightwing stood beside him, curling his lips threateningly in emphasis.

Sure that they were now paying attention, Adrian went on to outline their obstacle course. "First you will be going under the low crawl... you must crawl using your elbows and knees the entire time, and you cannot touch any of the ropes strewn over you. Second is the tire run, and you must step through every tire. Third is the two-hand vault, which you must pass with both hands on the vault as you leap over with either leg on each side. Fourth is the shelf mount, which is set low enough for even you shorties to push yourself onto... doesn't matter how you get onto the shelf as long as you get on without any help. Once you clear the mount, fifth is the "H" bars, which are single wide poles that you can only step on with one foot at a time and you cannot fall off any of them. Sixth is thru the tire, which you must do feet first - grab the top of the tire and jump through - headdiving is not allowed. Seventh is balance beam, three feet wide, and you must jog or run the entire length, then jump down from it with both feet on the ground. Eigth is the wall scale... there are holes and ledges in the wall for you to grab onto and use as footholds. Once you clear the wall and land on the other side, ninth is the horizontal high ladder, which you must cross without your feet touching the ground. Tenth is the rope climb, where you must use the rope to climb to the top, touch the knot and then slide back down. Last is run two laps around the obstacle course, the track is marked in white paint."

Looking around, Adrian glared at them with a 'You better not have any questions' look. After all, most of the recruits had done this obstacle course before, so they should know how it's done. And he had placed the more experienced recruits in the front so they could show the newbies in the back how it's done. "First pair, go!"

Riordan was one of the newbies standing in the back with a "What in the hell did I just get myself into?" look upon his face. He frowned a bit at the drill sergeant's remark about how even the shorter recruits would be able to do one of the obstacles. He wasn't so sure about that... it looked rather high up... And they had to do this three times? Once would probably wear him out... Perhaps he'd get a break between them?

He wasn't going to ask about that though. Adrian looked terrifying. The only thing that looked worse was the drill sergeant's wolf. Well, he'd signed himself up to be a wolfrider... he shouldn't have thought it would all be easy... The youngster watched as the first group got set up to go. He'd have to watch what they did and see if there were any tricks to getting some of these obstacles done. Most seemed fairly straightforward... luckily. Adrian's instructions had been rather quickfire and abrupt. And he'd said he wasn't going to repeat them...

"C'mon, Riordan. You can do this... just don't make that guy angry..." He muttered under his breath, trying to stop his heart from beating its way out of his chest before he'd even started the course.

Emi was rather calm when she heard the instructions. This won't be a problem for me. All the nights out fighting is actually doing me some really good in class, she thought to herself.

Behind her she could hear the muttering of a boy who was obviously terrified of their Drill Sergeant. She turned around and saw her friend, the short boy, Riordan. "Don't worry kid. You just need to believe in your self. If you do you'll do just fine." She smiled at the boy. She quickly turned around to watch the others in front of her do the obstacle course. That and so as to not get yelled at by the Drill Sergeant.

Emi cracked her knuckles. "This is gonna be fun," she said out loud. She could feel the eyes of the people around her turn to look at her. She wondered what Adrian would think of her.

Standing perhaps three pairs down from the front was Angel, watching those before her run the course that looked like....well, as insane as she imagined the Drill Sergeant was. She had encounters with the course before, one of which ended up twisting her ankle (blasted tires.) She hadn't guaged that there would be distractions that might break her concentration. This time, she would be ready.

Her emerald eyes locked in on the direction of the course, hearing every word of the Drill Sergeant's instructions and trying to keep in mind the steps. To help her, she imagined it was her father telling her to do such things. Today, she would make it through the three times she had to run it, come Hell or high water. Even then, that wouldn't stop her. She glanced briefly at the wolf that might pounce on her should she fall behind or lose track; right, best to avoid that.

She could hear the other recruits behind her, silently wishing them the best of luck and hoping they wouldn't get in her way.

Jenna crossed her arms, an obvious scowl on her face. Was she upset about running the course three times? No. She could handle that. Instead, she was upset about the person she had to race. More importantly, she was upset about being in the back. Two separate times she managed to complete the course in the past with only 4 mistakes in total. [Those vaults and H-bars got her every time, no matter how careful she was.] How did she deserve to be paired with Riordan?

Maybe it was her previous times that dragged her down into the back row. Before, she would meticulously and somewhat slowly go through each obstacle, more worried about actually finishing without injury or too many mistakes rather than overall speed. That had to be it. This time would be different.

"Believing in yourself won't help if you don't have the capability to do well in the first place," Jenna snapped as quietly as she could, shooting a glare towards Emi. That's who she should be racing.

She turned the glare onto the nervous boy beside her and muttered harshly, "Don't expect me to help you or wait for you or anything."

Kaela swallowed as she looked over the obstacle course, but her mind was not so much on the difficulty of it as on the heavy gazes of Adrian and Nightwing. So much depended on her training, and how she carried herself through it, how she performed. She felt uncomfortable, not knowing exactly what they expected, what they were looking for. Even in the past...she'd always known her opponent, what he expected. Now she found herself constantly guessing at her superiors.

A few tentative friendships were beginning to draw her out of her shell of fear and panic, to the point that she was now more able to focus on the task of meeting the teachers' and sergeant's expectations. She glanced uneasily at the other recruits, hoping someone would pick her as a partner. The thought of asking someone herself petrified her. Was Russell here, or Keiran? She'd met them, at least, and they weren't complete strangers...

It hadn't really ocurred to Angel that she hadn't been partnered just yet. Taking another glance beside her, she noticed that spot was empty. That was going to be a problem. Then, from the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a very nervous-looking girl. She could almost feel her anxiety. Her focused gaze softened and she smiled to the girl, beckoning her with a wave-over motion.

"Over here, I'll partner with you!." She called to her, keeping a friendly smile on her face as she hoped she would accept the offer. If the girl came over, she would move aside so she could take a proper place. "Have you ever done this course before?" She would ask in a quieter tone, hoping to ease some of her anxiousness if anything.

Lyra was panicking, but not over the strenuous course, but rather over the partner rule. As she watched the fellow recruits get in pairs, she lingered towards the back. She wasn't social and didn't have any friends, so she had no idea who would be her partner. What happen if I don't get a partner? Lyra thought nervously. More than anything she wanted to be a wolfrider, but if she can't even communicate with others... Just act casual and someone will ask you to be their partner, she told herself.

Growling, Keeva decided that she was not happy about this class. It wasn't the pair thing, nor was it the running or crawling. It was the heights. Yeah, heights suck, she told herself as her deep purple eyes watched the pairs starting. But, she would have to get through it. If she didn't, then no wolf for her. And a wolf was a yes. A big yes. More yes than heights were no. After contemplating the whirling thoughts in her head, she finally decided she was ready. Now to find a partner...

"Yo, ghost-girl. C'mon. Let's go," Keeva said, flicking her fingers at a pale, sorta worried looking girl behind her. She didn't look like much, but looks were always deceiving, as Keeva very well knew. Besides, if the girl sucked, at least Keeva herself wouldn't get laughed at for her height-fear.

Emi heard Jenna snap at her but pretended not to. She wasn't about to let Jenna bring her down. For all she cared Jenna could believe what she wanted to. Still, even though Emi had said that she was going to have fun doing the course she still needed a partner to run the course with. She looked around to find a partner. This maybe a tad bit hard, she thought. Bouncing up and down she continued to search for a partner.

Emi was frustrated at herself for not having found a partner sooner. She figured that she would be fine if her partner matched her in skill or if they had a bit of a time to keep up. she was more than happy to figure out how to finish the course with a challenge. Even so she was not that happy at the time.

Lysander grinned. Everything here was new, exciting. He had loads of confidence that he would do well. He had no quarrels with the task at hand aside from the fact that he was dead last in the line. So what if he'd just joined! Lysander was in top physical condition! There was one small hope, however; an open spot next to someone closer up. He grinned and slinked up next to a girl. As he got closer, he realized who it was. When he reached the spot, he gave her a cool smile. "Hey, Emi. Small Academy after all."

Lysander pointed up ahead to the obstacle course. "What say you and me give this racing thing a whirl?" His smile changed to a faux sympathetic look. "Hey, don't worry. I'll go easy on ya." Maybe he was overconfident. Maybe he was right to say it. The answer to that mystery was up to Emi. The smile returned. 'This is certainly going to be... interesting.' There were two stations that he was just dying to try out, the first being the wall climb and the second being climbing the rope. Phys Ed at the school in the city couldn't top that.

"Hey Lysander," Emi greeted Lysander as he moved next to her. He had obviously just got there. Still, she was happy that she had a partner now. Whats more was that it was one of her friends.

"Let's race, but don't think that you should go easy on me. You do that and I will crush ya." A smirk formed on the girls face. She loved going up against her friend. It was always a lot of fun and gave her a challenge. Heh, would you look at that. I was not only right that this would be fun but it just got twice as fun. Emi chuckled to herself.

Is she talking to me? Lyra wondered as a girl flicked her fingers in her direction. C'mon, speak up, she told herself. "Umm, you want to be partners?" Lyra said timidly to the girl, hoping she wasn't making a mistake.

"Uh, like I really have a choice," Keeva said, rolling her eyes at the girl. "Name's Keeva. Don't mess this up, kay? I don't plan on fluking just coz my partner passed out on me." The short-ish girl make a big deal of tapping her foot on the powder-snow sprinkled ground. She was nervous- and that meant she was going to be huffy. The best way she knew how to protect her anxieties were to take it out on someone else. And she was good at that. "Well?" she questioned, raising a nicely arched eye brow. "Ready? Or are we going to wait until Nightwing gets hungry?"

Riordan gave a bit of a start as the girl next to him snapped at him. He bit at his lower lip and looked ahead to see how much longer they were going to be. Oh what he would give to have time stop... or something happen where they wouldn't have to do this... But the boy had a feeling the Drill Sergeant wouldn't let them off that easy.

"Uh... good luck..." He offered to Jenna.
