The day had started off like most others, with the kitchens workers rising before the dragonriders and other residents to begin the task of preparing breakfast. Seeing as how her foster mother was one of those kitchen workers who rose with the dawn, Kella found herself being shaken out of bed much earlier than she'd like. "Mmmmpppffff," Kella grumbled into her pillow, turning over and pulling the sleeping fur over her head. Maybe if she ignored the pinching, prodding woman for long enough she'd just go away- "OKAY! Okay, I'm uuuppp," Kella said after one particularly hard pinch made her jump nearly out of bed.

Once she was awake, alert, and clothed, Kella managed to shuffle her way into the kitchens. On any other morning, she might have run as far away from the kitchens as she could get, but the young girl had been reprimanded recently and felt the need to redeem herself. So, Kella willingly offered herself up for the odd tasks that needed to be done.

"Make sure you don't spend hours down there!" The robust cook yelled after her, brandishing a wooden spoon as a warning. "Get only what I asked for, and get yourself right back up here! Kella turned away from the cook and began to walk away. "Yeah, yeah," Kella replied and rolled her eyes. The corridor leading down into the storerooms was dark; no one had gotten around to changing the glows yet. Kella grumbled to herself, though she shouldn't really be complaining over the lack of light. The young girl had been to and from the storage caverns so many times that she didn't even need to open her eyes to get down there safely!

"Shards, shards, shards..." Lynna threw herself down the hallway at top speed. Naturally SOMEONE didn't bring any salt up to the kitchen when it ran out - and of course, the head cook would have a fit if she discovered the missing ingredient. Naturally, Lynna's mother had noticed but instead of going and fetching some herself, Lynna had been yanked from the greens she had been told to peel and told to go bring some up.

The hallway was dark as usual, the glow boy hadn't hit this area for refreshing the glows. This should be the very first place he should start! She blew an errant strand of hair from her eyes as she fumbled for the large heavy bags of salt in the far corner of the storageroom. Puffing a little from the effort, Lynna grabbed two of the large bags and slung them over her shoulder. They were about as heavy as she could bear, and the path back up to the kitchen was slopped upwards (naturally).

Knowing that the slower she went the more haranguing she would get from her mother, Lynna turned and headed back out as fast as she could, not noticing or hearing another young girl approaching.

The impact was swift and hard - Lynna backed up by the weight of the bags barely moved, but nearly lost her balance and hold on the heavy things.

Not knowing what had happened to the other person she called out, "Crackdust! Are you alright?"

Kella took her time getting from the kitchens down into the storerooms, despite what that cook and her spoon-weapon had said. Kella did whatever Kella wanted, and more importantly, how she wanted to do it. The girl was headstrong, for sure, but to a fault. As she progressed down the pathway into the caverns used for storage, the glows became brighter and brighter until she could see clearly. The young girl thought that that was a bit strange. Had she passed the glow-boy on his way up the tunnel? Well, for a few moments it had been darker-than-pitch, so she might have and just not noticed.

Shrugging, Kella pushed the heavy wooden door to the storerooms open and slipped inside. She grinned, sighing happily as she feasted her sights upon row after row of... stuff. Everything one could think of was down here! She wandered down the first aisle of shelves, running her fingers lightly over jars of all different sorts of herbs and spices for cooking. Kella found herself lost in the world that was storage, eyes roaming delightedly over huge rolls of brightly dyed fabrics (those must have been expensive!, Kella thought as she fingered a rich green fabric). But Kella didn't want to disturb the entirety of the storage rooms, she'd leave some of its wonders to be explored another day.

So, the girl turned and began to head back towards the area reserved for foodstuffs. Using her fingers, she ticked off the assortment of spices and things that the cooks had requested. Busy recalling the list, Kella wasn't really paying attention to where she was going. Needless to say, the young girl was surprised when she was knocked off balance by something fast, and heavy, and found herself sprawled on the floor.

"What, in Faranth's name?!" Kella cursed loudly, the first expletive followed by a string of more colorful and expressive words muttered under her breath as she looked around trying to regain her sense of self. Then she heard a second voice, asking her if she was alright. "Well, yeah, I guess I'm fine. But maybe you should watch where you're going. You did knock me to the ground," she snarled angrily as she placed her palms against the floor and pushed herself to standing.

Her eyes now adjusting to the light coming in from the hallway, Lynna blinked a few times, and smiled at Kella, recognizing the girl on sight. "I'm really sorry... wait, did the cook send you after salt?" Noticing the flush to the girl's cheeks, she ducked her head a little sheepishly, "I really am sorry - are you okay?" The hair that had escaped her ponytail fell into her eyes and she blew it away instinctively without noticing.

(Our cook needs a name...XD)

Riordan wondered why he was stuck changing the glows. It wasn't his chore of the day, but he'd been cornered by one of the Lower Caverns women and forced to do it anyways. Scowling, he carried the basket of glows down the passageway, exchanging those that were dim with ones out of his basket.

As he progressed down the hallway he suddenly jumped as yelling came from on down the passageway to where the storage rooms where. Taking a few deep breaths, he recovered and continued on, heading towards the two girls as he replaced glow after glow. This was the most boring job ever.

Kella still wore a scowl on her face, more to intimidate Lynna than anything else. She wasn't hurt, nor was she really shaken up from being knocked over. Kella was a rough-and-tumble little girl, and she had picked herself right up off the floor without a problem. She quickly gave Lynna the once over, than shrugged.

"Nah, Briala prattled on about how I had to get this spice, or that one, and she sent me down here with a list of stuff to get. But no salt. Nope," the young girl responded before turning on her heel and brushing past Lynna to reach up and grab a container of allspice. "She sent you down here just to get salt? That's all? Shards, Briala's such a dimglow sometimes."

( There! I just kinda pulled a name for her out of thin air. xDD )

"No - my mother got to me first." Lynna made a face, "of course, if I don't hurry..." she let her voice ring with the unspoken threat. She wrinkled her nose at the thought, then gave a quick smile to the girl. She still seemed a little upset, but anyone would be after being knocked over. She sighed unintentionally, not looking forward to the prospect of running back up the sloped hall.

"I'll see you up there Kella." She half-smiled, readjusted her salt bags and dodged out of the room.

Riordan's work had brought him closer and closer to where the girls were and he had to step back to avoid Lynna. "Hey... need help with those?" He managed to speak up, slightly surprised at his bravery. "I'm not even supposed to be doing the glows... Plus, I'm done with this area..."

The candidate gestured towards one of the bags Lynna was hauling. "Here, I'll help..."

Kella knew Lynna's mother, and the unspoken threat left hanging in the air was enough to make the young girl cringe. "Yeah, you'd best get back up before she decides to come down here and drag you back up by your ear," the girl said, her face contorted into a mixture of dislike for the woman, and reluctance to give her a reason to be angry. "See ya," Kella said and waggled her fingers at the other girl's back as she headed back up.

Kella turned and found herself once more alone in the stockrooms and she had to breathe a sigh of relief, and happiness. She'd best not dawdle too long, though, and began to pick jars of spices and things off the shelves. If she didn't hurry back up, she might not get lunch!

Lynna skidded half to a halt at the other candidate's words. She glanced up the hallway, judging how far she really did have to carry the heavy weight, then to the boy standing before her. She knew he was one of the candidates on sight - those who did not work in the Weyr (consistently) had taken to spending time together, including eating in the Lower Caverns together.

She let one of the bags slide from her shoulder, and offered it to him. "Sure, that would be great." She smiled broadly, then inclined her head towards the kitchen. "Thank you...and you were...?" she prompted him for his name, simply so she could commit it to memory.

The boy smiled at took the bag, hefting it onto his own shoulder. "Riordan. And you...?" He recognized her but seemed to be pretty bad with names. The bag settled, he started back up towards the kitchens, the basket of glows in one hand.

"Lynna," the girl grinned and picked up her pace. "I see someone roped you into glows duty." She chuckled amicably, "Don't let them convince you that you have to do it all the time now that you've done it once - they'll have you out filling baskets during the Hatching if you let them." She was embellishing a little, but in her mind was the worry that should the eggs start to hatch during a Kitchen shift, she might have to fight off her mother to get herself down to the sands in time. Well, okay, that was a little dramatic. But it rather felt that way sometimes.

Lynna sighed, then inquired, "You're Weyrbred aren't you?" She did seem to find him familiar the more she glanced his way. He'd been around for a while at the very least, she was certain. He was also rather cute - a little on the short side, with a scrappy look to him.

Riordan scowled. "Sharding dimglow who was supposed to do it didn't show. I go to get breakfast and get roped into a chore instead." He sighed and then shook his head at the girl's question. "Holdbred. Ista Hold. But I've been here for almost two Turns now." He frowned a bit at that reminder that he hadn't Impressed yet. But, there was this clutch on the sands...

"You a candidate?"
PostPosted: Thu Mar 12, 2009 10:58 am

"Actually, I am." She blushed at the thought. That the boy had been here for two years meant that he hadn't impressed - and with the amount of clutches the queens had been having, he'd probably walked the sands quite a few times. While she knew the heartbreak he must have had (her mother told her repeatedly about it when she was younger), it was still exciting in her mind.

"This will be my first time walking the sands. I'm so nervous!" She looked a little sad and worried on his behalf - maybe she'd hurt him by mentioning he hadn't impressed yet? "Sorry..." She bit her lip pensively. There were a lot of things she was dying to ask him, but was uncertain how to bring them up.

She changed the topic briefly, just in case he didn't want to talk about it. "And here I go roping you into helping me with chores...At least we're going in the right direction to get you some food!"

Riordan smiled. "There's a lot of new Candidates, it seems. I'm nervous as well, even if it isn't my first time..." The smile slipped a bit before he firmly placed it back on his lips. No point in getting depressed over failed attempts. There were two more clutches on the Hatching Grounds sands... two more chances at Impression.

The boy gave a laugh. "Well, I was already down here, might as well help out some." His stomach gave a rumble and he laughed again. "I think my stomach's disagreeing with me and saying I should've just gone to get breakfast instead of helping."
