I dont think we had a thread on this last year, but it's been on my mind.

We've all seen the commercials for the 'topsy turvy' tomato hanger, and i've seen several knock offs in gardening stores, where the tomatoes hang and grow.

The one pro i can think of for this, is that it's a space saver for those who dont have tons of planting room. Also, according to the creators the water and nutrients go right into the roots of the plants.

My only concern with those is how do they hold the plants without tearing? Especially if you have a large tomato plant that's full of ripe fruit.

I know that tomatoes grow well in a hanging pot, I've just never grown them upside down before! Growing them up off the ground, whether upside-down or not, is a good idea, though, if you live in an area with slugs, snails, and pillbugs. I would think that having the stems hang straight down would keep them from splitting, which larger varieties will sometimes do in a regular hanging pot.

we grew them like hanging flowers (that type of pot) and they turned out pretty well. we still kept a metal frame/fence around them because of the squirrels, but they didn't eat them as much as when we planted them on the ground. we did the same thing with the strawberries too.

I heard strawberries were better, not as much weight hanging.

They grew really nicely and weren't too heavy. Haha, it made it easy to put over the hook since its higher up than I am biggrin

I did some research on this. Turns out growing tomatoes upside down is nothing new; its even mentioned in the gardening manual I have from the mid 70's I believe.

It's better to do with the smaller types of tomatoes, from cherries to roma. (These are just the examples I know)

The sites and stuff I've found tell you how to do with with a 5 gallon bucket, I just have no idea where to hang something that heavy from safely where I live! I did find a lot of neat pictures of set ups people had made just for their hanging tomatoes!

At my parents house we were lucky and had an old awning frame on our porch, but no awning to put on it. So we used to just hang the plants there. I'm sure building a simple wood frame with hooks would work too.

Hrrm..that interesting. I wonder why more people dont do it than they do.

Well ive planted my tomatoes in the thingy, and it looks a bit different from the example i put above, but i'll be posting some actual photos of mine soon. ^^
