The wind grew harsher, biting deeper as the sun slipped below the horizon. Shadows crawled over themselves as more and more of the light vanished, growing bolder as they slipped away from the trees and spread out over grass crisping with frost.

The moon, ripe and heavy in the night sky, fought for dominance over the darkness of night, rising steadily to take the place of the sun, its light feeding the shadows.

Silent as a ghost, the enormous alpha slipped through the near living shadows, his nose to the wind as his heavy paws crunched lightly through the grass. His blue eyes nearly glowed when the moon struck them, his jaws parting in a happy grin when he caught the familiar smell of his one and only.

A shiver ran down the canid's spine, the cold nipping at his nose, ears, and tail. How long has it been since he faced the cold alone? The darkness was creeping all around as night took hold of the day to the early hours, the stars dotting the skies and moon shining as brightly as the late-sun. The familiar scent of his alpha was close, but his intent on other matters overwhelmed the desire to go to his side. Nose against the ground, he continued to sniff about but his scent was all he could find.

Flicking his ears, the big alpha gazed longingly at the moon, and the stretch of land bathed in its light. His packlands called to him, but he had a greater duty now. His rounds had been completed for the day, and he was reassured his pack was safe.

Sighing heavily, he turned and followed the scent of his mate, picking up his pace the closer he got. The both of them were on a mission, and if they didn't succeed . . . He shook himself as he moved, not willing to think about it.

The youth raised his head and took a few sniffs and again he tried the ground, taking the cold nips to his nose. The scents were a mixture of the vagabonds and those who have passed through here and there. It was difficult to find any traces of the specific entity he was looking. The harder he tried, the more he felt defeated. Ears back and tail down, a soft whimper escaped his maw.

"D-Deimos, I can't find anything. Are you sure she's even around here anymore?" The charcoal-blue wolf asked, deep golden eyes peering over his shoulder toward the approaching alpha. Though he wished it hadn't, but doubt was starting to creep into his heart.

Hearing the distress in his mate's voice, Deimos padded up beside the smaller wolf, rubbing his cheek against Ehrek's, a soft growl in his throat. "She's hear, love. I can still smell her. The b***h has made sure to stay on her side of the river."

His ears twitched again, locking in on the sound of the river close by. The demon's den was about a mile from the churning water, and if she was as close as Jahka had hinted in her pregnancy, it would explain how stale and feint her scent was.

"C'mon," he said softly, nipping at the smaller wolf's charcoal ear as he started towards the river.

With Deimos around, his spirits would always lift and that hope that their goal was with their grasp. Ehrek snapped his jaws to affirm that he was ready for just about anything concerning the female who they sought after.

"It is not her staying on her side of the river that worried me, Deimos, it was if she would sit still long enough for us to find her..." the male replied quickly keeping pace with the alpha and walking beside him. Deep down, he wished some things could be prevented, but down there, he knew some things cannot be avoided.
Ashtiel Pantheres
((thanks, everyone :] ))

When they reached the river, Deimos leapt easily from rock to jutting rock, never once getting his paws wet until he landed on the opposite bank. The scent was already stronger, already stinging his nose. His tail curled lazily over his back, and he glanced back at Ehrek, his expression softening at the sight of his Northern Lights.

But then he thought on his mate's words. "You think it's a trap . . . "
PhiferWolf
Ehrek wasn't as agile as Deimos, well, maybe he was, but he certainly wasn't going to break his legs by slipping on a rock just to get onto the other side of the river. Looking at the current, strong and steady, if he moved quickly, he'll make it across. Without much hesitation, he bounded across the surface, splashing a few times and making it to the other side with heavily wet fur. Shaking, he nipped his mate with a grin.

"Not so much a trap, I do not think a pregnant female could move too much and set up anything elaborate. What I was more concerned about was for her to sit in her den for us to stroll right in. She could have moved . . . but the scent is strong, isn't it?"

Smiling, Deimos shook his head. "Silly mutt. You're soaked . . . " The big alpha dragged his tongue against Ehrek's wet ruff before nipping at his ear. "And yes, to me, this place reeks. She is still here. Why, I don't know. She's not stupid, so it doesn't make sense as to why she hasn't left . . . "

*gets distracted*
PhiferWolf
"I may be wet, and a mutt, but I don't have my scent anymore," The little wolf replied with a raspberry of innocence at the larger alpha. Though their situation was dire, that did not mean it would hurt them to have a little fun. Turning his head toward the direction of the scent, he let a soft growl past his lips.

"If she moved or not, we should take advantage of it quickly before she gets wise..."

Deimos stretched his legs, looking into the distance. His body was already jumpy, anticipating a possible showdown. Adrenaline hummed through his veins and he flicked an ear back at his mate. "You're right. Let's go," he murmured softly, a small smile at the corner of his mouth, just for his mate.

Keeping his body low to the ground but capable of moving efficiently, the charcoal-blue hued wolf followed his Alpha and his mate. Putting his heart into every and any action Deimos chose, he would head-first follow. If it were not for him, Ehrek would still remain a lonely vagabond in the snowy north, shivering and sick from the cold. The very least he could do is offer his help in any endeavor the alpha sought to follow. Considering the circumstances, he needed it.

"How many do you suppose there are?... I would like to get my mind wrapped around the number of them before I misjudge and forget. Just her or more?" The young wolf questioned with a golden eye up at his mate. Still, the thought of family killing family unnerved him.

Deimos huffed softly, thinking as he moved like a ghost up the slight incline of the river bank, the trees dark and menacing before them. He could see the outline of the rocky outcropping above the cave Jahka had described to him, a black silhouette against the light of the moon shining behind.

"Jahka said the cave was empty, but that Moirei always acted as if someone were there with her. She talked, constantly. To herself it seems . . . "

"Crazy in the head, I am guessing? Then again, one has mentioned that talking to oneself is a sign of intelligence," Ehrek replied, picking up his pace to get along side the larger male. "But answering oneself is a sign of insanity." he finished.

Ehrek quietly splintered from Deimos' side and scurried about the area, being sure to stay within Deimos' peripheral vision, or at least his line of sight. Her scent was about the air but that could have meant she was just passing through, not sure if he was actually here. Still, he hoped, for their quest's sake, she was still here and too tired to move.

Moving back to the Lykos' leader's side, Ehrek nipped him to get his attention. "I worry about you, but I know you must do this. Whatever you choose to do, I will help any way I can." As they approached the outcropping of stone, the worry only grew.

Looking at his mate, Deimos' heart melted, as it did every time he met Ehrek's steady gaze. He stopped, letting the warmth banish the cold dread that had been creeping into his mind.

"I don't want to kill her, Ehrek. But she can't stay here. And she can't have those pups. She can't," he said with more vehemence than he'd intended, but he couldn't tell Ehrek about the dreams he'd been having. About the voice in his own head, telling him that allowing those pups to stay with Moirai would be disastrous for them all.

(( How is Jade? :3 ))

Ehrek looked at him, flicking his ears back. Looking at Deimos was like looking at fire; powerful, strong, fierce, destructive, but passionate, bold, and everlasting as long as there was a source, a reason for it to burn. And this fire was fluffy.

"I understand that, but nature must have its course. If you mean for her to keep them in her custody, that is what we are here to do, right?" Ehrek asked. "She can't have them..." Does he mean for her to have the litter or to keep the pups. Shaking his head, he figured it would be best if he did not think about it too much. He just had to get the task done and get back to the pack lands where life would return to normalcy.

Ashtiel Pantheres
He grew silent and simply watched his mate with calm blue eyes. Then his muzzle twitched as a breath of wind blew a new scent to his eager nose. Three new scents to be exact. And that one little breath of wind told him more information in a few moments than his eyes could have.

"The pups were born weeks ago . . . " With that, his nails dug in and he leapt away, sprinting like a stag through the trees, towards the cave looming darkly in the distance.

PhiferWolf
"Tsk." Ehrek pulled his lips back to bare fangs but bare no sound. Not a growl. Not a snarl. Not a howl. With his own heart pumping, the wolf bound after his alpha, determined to plunge into the shadows of the dark cave and the monster that lurked inside.

Three pups. Three newborn pups are alive in there and they cannot be hurt. He quickly though through his mind. Ehrek made no motions or voiced any suggestions to his alpha. If they are there, they cannot get caught in the struggle. If I have to, I'll have to protect them and get them out of there... That is what he would want, right?

Ashtiel Pantheres
Nails scrabbling on rock and loose stone, Deimos suddenly found himself at the cave's entrance, his ice blue eyes scanning the depths. But the cave was so dark, as if even the light of the near full moon was swallowed by the darkness. Suddenly something shifted inside, his ears pricked at the soft sound, and a shaft of that pure white moonlight fell at an angle into the cave, as if coming from a hole in the ceiling. It made a pool of brightness on the floor of the cavern, and in that pool lay the forms of three pups, pups old enough to not need their mother anymore if it came to it.

Their markings were indistinct from here, but Deimos was wary, his ears so far forward to catch any sound that they ached. He felt Ehrek's presence beside him, and took strength from it. "I won't hurt them . . . " he said softly, and there was promise in the timbre of his voice.

((ahhm, I've been kinda away from the happenings of Telk for a while, so I have no clue what's going on between packs : / ))

PhiferWolf
(( And just as our creative juices were flowing, I must leave again :< And if i do make it back tonight, I will be verily late. Forgive me! crying ))

Ehrek moved cautiously behind his alpha, following suite with his tail out in aggressiveness and his ears pointed forward for alertness. They were in enemy territory and within their grasp was the target of their quest. Three helpless pups resting in a den of shadows. If only he could get in and grab them all quickly and scurry out. No blood shed. No death. But if only it were that easy.

"Let me get them..." Ehrek whispered back. He took a cautious step forward, just an inch behind Deimos' foremost paw. He lifted his other as if to take a step and moved it forward. Stopped. Then moved it back. Hesitating, his paw kept testing the ground, unsure to take that unknowing step into the darkness. He'll protect me...

He took that extra step.

(( text me if you need me babe. Or call me 8D ))

Ashtiel Pantheres
(( QQ *clings to phifer* will do, darlin ;D ))
Deimos nodded once, then strode calmly into the swallowing darkness. His heart didn't race, his breathing remained steady and even. The only thing that betrayed his mood was his fur. His thick ruff bristled, making him seem larger and rougher looking. And as his back paw left the light of outside, his mate close next to him . . .

Moirai struck.

To be continued . . . .
