Okay. So my history teacher told me that right before he died, he had a gun in the jail, and fired it at the mob 6 times. i don't know if that's true. is it?

In all of my reading, I have never heard of such a thing. I recall (and please tell me if I am wrong, because I don't want to be spreading false information) but didn't Joseph say something to the essence of, "I am going as a lamb before the slaughter" before arriving at the jail? Try looking it up in the book Our Heritage and other Church-sponsored materials. Also, ask your Church leaders.

It's true. it's an obscure fact though so don't worry about it. He said that as well, but that doesn't' mean he didn't try to protect those in the room with him.
But really, two six-shot pistols against a mob that size didn't help at all. Hiram also defended them and they tried to barricade the door as well. If you want to look into it more, read church history, not just D&C. It's not essential to your eternal salvation though so don't fret over it.

You can also bet that if he had killed several people or even one with that gun that it would have been all over the Warsaw Gazette. I can't imagine at least trying to fire some warning shots if I had had a gun in a situation like that. The only place I have ever heard that there was a gun there was in the Church History (was that by B H Roberts?) (and that there might have been a fatality on the other side in the mob) and he also had a couple of wonderful books that if you really want to read the perspective of the saints during that time period are well worth your time - Missouri Persecutions and The Rise and Fall of Navoou - Any one can slant anything to their perspective - in my years of reading all things (pro and con) that I have had come to my knowledge - I have yet to find that things were not VERY slanted especially by those who were willing to persecute others. And also that somewhere is a rebuttal. Think of the book by the black slave, Fredrick Douglas, his book is actually put forth without much venom and with mostly just cold, hard facts - and yet look how long slavery existed here in the "land of the free."

Don't you also find it interesting that we are taught that Jesus Christ was the only perfect person to live here on the Earth and that we are still disappointed to find that others might have some imperfections? Why would we hold them up to such unreasonable expectations when we, ourselves, all have multiple faults? I guess we all have that desire for "happily ever aftering" that really doesn't exist here in this earth life, but are promised it can in the next life.

That reminds me of the Mountain Meadow Massacre. And how a lot of anti-LDS people have accused the church directly ordering the actions of those men. It's really odd that a church that helps so many people (regardless of their religion) takes so much flak for being "evil"

He wasn't the one with the gun.

I didn't know that part of the story. It wouldn't have helped if he did though, He knew he was going to be die. what better way to die than by die for your belief.

I haven't heard any sustainable evidence to support either claim. Plus I don't think it's a real relevant factor in his death. Probably some of the most important things to look are the two people who survived that shooting in miraculous circumstances. John Taylor was saved by his pocket watch.
So I don't think the fact whether Joseph had a gun is important or not

I've been to carthage, I've seen the bullet holes, I've seen where he fell. Even if he had the gun, with as many people as were there, he wouldn't have had much of a chance.

"Hyrum was the first to fall. A ball through the door struck him on the left side of the nose, throwing him to the floor. Three more balls entered his thigh, torso, and shin, killing him. John Taylor was hit in the thigh and fell against the windowsill, breaking his watch. Crawling toward the bed, he was struck again in the hip. Joseph pulled the trigger six times into the hall, dropped the pistol on the floor, and sprang to the window. With one leg over the sill, he raised his arms in the Masonic sigh of distress. A ball from the doorway struck his hip, and a shot from the outside entered his chest. Another hit under the heart and a fourth his collarbone. He fell outward crying, "O Lord my God!" Landing on his left side, he struggled to sit up against the curb of a well and died within seconds. Richards raised his head above the sill far enough to see that Joseph was dead and then turned to help John Taylor. Taylor's watch had stopped at sixteen minutes past five."

From "Rough Stone Rolling," by Richard Lyman Bushman. Page 550.

If you want to know more about Joseph Smith's history, I highly recommend this book. The gun was a six-shooter smuggled in earlier by Cyrus Wheelock. John Fullmer had previously given Joseph a single-shot pistol, which was passed along to Hyrum.
