Well, now she'd done it. She'd grown cocky, confident in her own abilities as a thief, especially with a friend to help her. Stealing from two-leggers--Amaury knew it wasn't a safe way to live, but it was her way of living. She'd gotten sloppy.
She'd gotten caught.
She looked disdainfully on at the small pack of thing brown dogs that circled her where she was tied at the edge of this native village. They stayed away, now that they'd learned that even a small female wolf had flashing sharp teeth. The children, too, were kept away by their parents, but Amaury did not like the way the men of the village looked at her. Deciding what to do with her, she supposed, but she did not understand their language, or their motions.
Lite-Brite, at least, she hoped, had escaped. Even with his bright coat and his frequent dizziness, he had retained presence of mind enough to flee. With her foot caught in a snare, she'd practically ordered him to run, then turned on her captors, forcing them to choose between keeping her or possibly losing both of them.
She lifted a lip at one of the dogs that dared to get too close. The thong around her hind foot was attached to a peg in the ground; it prevented her from moving an inch or getting her jaws around it. At least she'd been left her bracelet--for now. Small comfort, compared to what she'd lost.

She yelled run, and he ran, he always did what it took to please her. He liked her company, and truth be told she was the only stable thing in his confused and forgotten world. Which was why he had stopped running when he realized no one was giving chase. He has skidded to such a sudden stop his claws ground against the earth. At first he wasn't certain why she hadn't followed, the closer he slunk to the village the more apparent it became to him. She was in trouble, it was the first time certainly, but bound to happen to way they lived.
He slunk low to the earth unseen by the dogs or the humans, though how anyone managed to miss his eye blinding coat was beyond him. Perhaps it was just no one believing they could have seen something so bright, daring, and stupid.
Lite-Brite tried to cover his coat in dirt and dust to mute himself a bit and slunk ever closer, if he could get the peg out they might be able to escape. He certainly wasn't going to leave without her, even if she didn't like his company, he certainly liked hers. He hated being alone, mainly because his mind started to get confused again about who he was, where he was, and why.

He'd tailed the two since they got caught. He'd lived around the two-leggers enough to know they killed the wolves they captured because of fear. Fear for the little two-leggers. They'd never caught him, he only slinked in the shadows. He blended in, that much Backus knew. He inched forward towards her, sniffing to see if she was hostile or friendly; though, in this case, he figured she'd be hostile and scared.
He inched again, then movement caught his eye. Despite the dust that covered the bright male, he was noticeable. His direction changed, moving towards the male with a warning whimper, hushed towards human ears. They couldn't hear as well as wolves; he figured out. He'd been stealing their meat for a while. "Don't go over there yet..." he whispered softly, crouching low to the ground, ears pinned back to show he was friendly. "If you want to save your friend.... stay back. Let me do it..."
How to explain Backus had been here longer than most wolves would be comfortable with? In the back of his head, Backus figured he must have grown up near them; to feel so much at ease. Perhaps he'd been a pet of theirs before and he couldn't remember. He couldn't remember a lot of things, honestly.
The black and blue wolf had always been alone, ever since he woke up with no memory. There had been one other wolf with him; he didn't know who it was, even the fur color was fuzzy. He'd never ran into them again, not that he thought he would. The peg was the key to her freedom. Getting up on his paws again, Backus moved towards the confined female, whispering to her that he was friendly; going to free her. Nothing in his posture said otherwise. He was calm and collected; as if he'd done this before. He had, a couple of times. He'd freed puppies they'd caught after slaughtering their families. If those puppies lived, Backus didn't know. He didn't care, honestly. They weren't his.

Amaury's ears pricked toward the sounds she heard in the forest--soft, slinking sounds. Wolf sounds. She could scent wolf, too, or perhaps that was her imagination. Half of her hoped it was Lite-Brite coming for her; the other half hoped he had run far away, never to return. It wouldn't be worth it, if he lost his own life. Still… though he'd never said as much, before she'd entered his life, what had he had? A time of wandering, of searching for pack mates he couldn't remember, who could be long dead.
Then she heard the voice, telling her the speaker was friendly. It wasn't Brite, no, but she had little choice but to trust it.
She glanced at the men. They were silent, watching her, and she purposely dropped her ears and gazed away from the forest's edge. It would be better if they did not suspect.

Lite-Brite was hesitant about allowing the male to enter the rescue scene, yet he had little choice. They needed all the help they could get lest they both be caught and killed. He let out a very soft low whine towards the male and slunk low remaining still in the dirt.
His pink eyes scanned the area with care and he watched Amaury as the other male approached her, he could not hear the whispered words yet it seemed she had. He watched her turn away and his posture relaxed a bit, maybe they would manage to escape without issue... His nose quivered and his eyes narrowed as he spotted the free roaming dogs, smaller, but trouble if they gave an alert.

He knew the small dogs were there, which is why he needed to go instead of the bright male. They'd see him in an instant. Where as Backus stood more of a chance in rescuing this female. He moved over, closer still, his whispering stopped, paws not making a sound. Wolves were always more stealthy than human dogs. It made it easy to get passed their defenses.
Carefully, he'd found the peg and looked to how she was tied. Could he pull the peg free? More than likely. They hadn't changed the way they did this at all despite how many wolves seemed to escape. He just hoped the dogs didn't grow-
And there they went, growling and barking at Backus. This made his movements hurried. He looked to the bright male and motioned him to take care of the pups. "Take care of them!" He called out, making sure the bright male knew exactly what he was talking about. The humans were grabbing their weapons. s**t, this just wasn't his day. He got his teeth around the peg and gave it a few hurried tugs. Ok, so it was stuck in the earth pretty good. No match for a wolf's strength, though.
With a few harder tugs, he freed her, nosing her to run in the opposite direction while he moved to bite one of the dog's muzzles who had been about to snap at him. Blood filled his mouth at that and he heard the dog whimper and howl, then growl. "Run!"
He didn't mean to bark out all these orders, but it just happened. His heart wouldn't be able to take to much more. It was already hurting him more than ever. The excitement had gotten to him. His weak heart was beating a mile a minute, filling his ears, drowning everything else out. Still, he had to get these two out of here.

Amaury was not a wolf who trust in strength in numbers or a pack mentality, but she felt she shouldn't leave the wolf who had just released her from her entrapment. So she did hesitate, if only for a moment, as he called for her to run. She was not a fighter, though--neither built nor trained for it. The peg still knotted to her heel, muscles knotted from sitting still for too long, she fled into the woods, almost bowling over Lite-Brite.
"Run, brilliant boy," she said, though she didn't shout as the strange male had. She wasn't loud; like fighting, it simply wasn't part of her. She hardly paused, just long enough to nudge her traveling partner in the shoulder, before she took off deeper into the forest. The wood banged against her leg, but she was good with knots. Now that it was lose, she could pull it free.

Lite-Brite might have run with Amaury if it seemed that their helping paw was going to do the same, but it was obvious the male wasn't going to run. He nudged her as she passed.
"Go Quickly, I'll find you." His words faltered a bit at the end, he feared loosing her, yet something in him told him to help the other male. He could remember standing with others as friend, packmate, brother?
He twisted and leapt over with a growl at the dogs his body crouching and his hackles rising. He snarled and moved to attack those that chose to attack the other male, flanking and keeping them from doing any serious damage,

Backus was shocked when the other male stayed and fought with him, despite his command. His gasping growl sounded as he lunged for the throat of one of the dogs, clamping down on it, getting scratched in the face, on his eye, feeling those claws rip fur and flesh alike. He let out another grow as he used his own claws in the dog's underbelly, listening with a pleased thought at the sound of the whimpering. He unlatched, dropping the dying dog just in time for another to get to him.
How many were there? He looked, with the eye that wasn't clawed, to the bright male and growled. They were outnumbered. They wouldn't make it if they stayed and fought. Wolves always out ran domesticated dogs, didn't they? "We can't make it!" He said with a grunt, his chest causing him to double over, head hanging low. Dangerous position, letting his guard down. But it hurt so bad!
The black and blue male let out a howl of pain as one of the larger dogs got a hold of his ear and the flesh around it, biting down hard. He could feel the blood drip into his other eye before he managed to swipe at the dog, catching him in the chest and then kicked him away with a well maneuvered flip. "We need to run now!"
That being said, he ran over to the bright wolf, the dogs nipping at his tail, giving chase, and nudged him towards the direction the female ran. "We... need to run now... if you ...want to live to go back to her.." He could make it. He could make it to safe ground before the pain would take over. That's what he told himself.

Amaury had gone far, only halting when she came to a string of rocky erratics that she would have to go around, before she realized she was not being pursued--neither by dogs nor by either of the two wolves who had assisted in her escape. Go quickly--I'll find you.
"I thought you meant immediately," she growled. "Not eventually."
But there was little she could do, unless she wanted to turn around, perhaps delaying their chances of escape even more. Besides, if she headed off into the woods again on her own, it would make her harder to find: better to stay put and let them follow her scent trail. Better, too, to not do anything that would bring attention to her position, lest her captors wished to find their prize.
She spun herself in tight circles, her muscles aching with energy they wished to release, and finally sat, gnawing on the thong on her heel and working out the knot.

Through the hazy rage of the fight Lite-Brite managed to catch Backus words and lunged to put himself infront of the other male and block the dogs. His legs shook beneath him, they were tougher then the dogs, but outnumbered. He growled, snarled, and finally flung the last small dog off before tearing one away from Backus flank and racing out in the direction Amaury had gone.
I will live to go back to her... His fuzzy mind told him he had to keep going. His heart thudded in his chest and he felt his blood clotting against his fur. Better then feeling the precious life liquid pour away. His nose ached were it had met many a fang and claw.
Finally he slowed a bit and looked back to see if he was being followed, to make sure Backus was there.

Indeed Backus was there. Worse for ware, but alive none the less. Oh, his chest hurt so bad, the blood was pumping, his heart felt like it was skipping beats. Shortness of breath came over him as they slipped further away. He knew the two other wolves to be alright, to be fine now that they were rescued and reunited.
Backus' vision was laced in black as he caught up to Lite-Brite and then he leaned against a tree and stopped all together, head hanging low. His nose was pressed to the forest floor, blood dripped from his wounds, smearing his fur, obstructing his vision. "G...Go on," he managed to husk out as he laid down and cried out as his chest lurched painfully. It caused him to curl up like he was a puppy, paws almost as if trying to grasp his chest to rip the painful thing out.
The female was safe, her companion, bitten like he was, but safe. If he died here, he could go happily. He'd done something fantastic for the two.

Ears pricked and attuned to the slightest sound, Amaury heard the dogs end their ceaseless hunting calls. Nervous that the two males had not yet reappeared, she stood again, trotting back the way she had come, leaving the leather string behind. She heard Backus' cry, and her trot turned to a run.
It was easy enough to find Lite-Brite, even with his coat dirtied and torn. She could smell blood on him, not all his own, and she scampered up next to him, whimpering sympathetically. Her pink tongue washed over his green nose, wiping away some of the stains.
She would have missed Backus if not for his ragged breathing, harsh in her ears. She padded carefully over to where he lay. No one could mistake him for being dead, with his chest heaving so hard, but he certainly sounded as though he were on the brink of Hades. She nosed his neck, but there was no obvious wound to his trachea, nothing new that would have explained his condition. "I need you up, my black knight," she said. "They won't stay away forever…"

Lite-Brite relaxed as his breathing slowly settled down, he twisted to inspect the worst of the wounds to his flank. They would heal up, as would the clips and cuts on his muzzle, neck, and shoulders. He moved over to the more seriously injured male and frowned.
"Amaury...we have to help him out of here before they come...I'll try and lift him...if he falls I'll catch him...and you help me balance him on my back." He nuzzled her glad she was safe.
He turned to the other male and frowned. "come on now, I'll help you..." He moved to push the other wolf to his feet trying to help him balance himself.

Some knight he was. This male felt like if he went to sleep now, he'd never wake up again. So he focused on their words and tried to help. Backus hated when others worried over him, though right now, he could understand. Whimpering, Backus managed, after a couple of tries, to get to his feet. He was wobbly then, and stumbled and fell after trying to take a step. He was getting dizzy.
Looking to the female he'd saved, and the male that had saved his life, his face burned in shame. Stupid weak heart condition. "I... I'm sorry.." he whimpered a bit, "for... being.... more trouble than help," he finally managed to get out. Although his voice was weak and laced in pain, it still managed to be deep.
