Fenghuang was unaware of how long it had been since he had last been in the company of others. His constant watches, dedicated patrolling and his 'duty' had long since drawn him away from any social circle he might have been involved in. The days came and went in such a fashion that he wasn't entirely certain of the time he had given to this little endeavour. It was a moot point though and since he had already come to terms with the decision he could draw strength from the fact that it had been an overall success - there were just some minor hiccups. One in particular was the fact that his charge had started moving and exploring a lot more. In certain regions stealthing around her undetected seemed impossible.
Still he had persevered and had been rewarded in ways that he couldn't have imagined to begin with. In his very first encounter with the mare he had sighted something very beautiful beneath her facade and while he hadn't seen it face to face he had been granted the opportunity to see it through these ways. Following his visit her health had improved considerably and she seemed to be in better spirits. He'd done his job and while she mostly likely loathed his very existence she should have at least been thankful for his intervention.
He was 'content' in a manner of speaking, comfortable in the knowledge that he could protect her and in return he could watch as the smile lined her lips and her laughter sang out through the air. There was no chance in hell the rugged stallion would have succeeded in experiencing such emotions up front! Alas he had been required to sacrifice more than just his social circle and in order to fit in with his surroundings he had become even worse in appearance than he had been previously - if she assumed he had stank then, then she was in for a surprise.
His overall appearance had taken him a while to get used to but now that he smelt more like the terrain he was increasingly difficult to detect. His hair was mangled but this was nothing new and his coat was grubby but it did it's job overall. If anything it aided him in every sense of the word given that any encounter with him would send many screaming for their lives. Now if he could somehow manage to start a 'monster in the forest legend' he would be an incredibly happy camper.
Nevertheless this morning was no more different than his usual, he had woken up early and proceeded to do a variety of stretches to ease away the tension in his limbs. A little breakfast here and there and he'd be set to return to his patrols, nothing to it...

Raccoon was on a mission.
In her opinion, she had been MORE than generous to the mysterious Someone Else that had moved into the neighborhood. She had left the Someone Else to their own devices for a long period of time, assuming with her oh so trusting and considerate nature that the Someone Else was merely passing through, or else trying to set up their own home, etc. It WAS a pretty place, with water and trees and the grasses and fruits that Mistress liked so very much. Why WOULDN'T a Someone Else like it?
All could have been fine, had the Someone Else not pushed their luck and encroached a little too closely on Mistress. Even more suspiciously, the Someone Else was crafty, and Raccoon had not yet been able to see him/her or any real traces of him/her, not even bits of hair. The fact that Someone Else didn't want to be seen increased the suspicious factor, and had resulted in Raccoon deciding that Someone Else was obviously a threat to Mistress.
Acting on that belief, she had been quick to support and encourage Mistress in her 'journeying', hoping that the Someone Else would go away in the meantime. Not only had Someone Else not, they had actually followed along! Obviously the time for subtlety was past.
Anelisse and Raccoon had returned to their riverside home refreshed and invigorated from their trip, Mistress returned to her usual glowing beauty and Raccoon, imbued with a strong sense of purpose. She was going to track down Someone Else and get an explanation out of them; a GOOD explanation. Otherwise, they'd have to leave.
Not that she knew how that would be accomplished, but it would happen, mark her words!
That was why Raccoon had left Mistress sleeping serenely against the trunk of a tree, her hair neatly arranged into a loose coil before Raccoon's departure. Framed by the black braid, she had positioned the Sparkly Shiny that Mistress always wore now, and after a quick survey she had taken to the trees, devoid of all her usual clanky trinkets and shinies. Today, she was...Stealth Raccoon.
And Stealth Raccoon was even more talented than she realized; not too long after she had left the clearing, she heard the sounds of movement and perked her ears. Something was moving nearby, rustling...
No, not something; someone. Someone Else!
With a bold chitter rather like an 'aha', she flung herself suddenly down out of the trees, landing on the back of a big, smelly Someone Else and immediately latching onto Someone Else's red mane.
Wait a minute. Red?

Raccoon just had a way of sneaking up on him, perhaps she truly did excel at stealthing or perhaps he was losing his touch. It was ironic of course, to be assaulted during the one period in which he wasn't paying attention. He hadn't even had a chance to take a gulp of his breakfast when he had felt the weight upon his neck and the tug upon his mane. Not only that, but the chirruping of success seemed frighteningly familiar and he was loathe to look round in case his suspicions were correct. There was no avoiding the matter of course, but he could delay it for a split second as he attempted to regain his composure beneath the layers of filth and stench. Needless to say, he wasn't terribly happy at the news that he had been discovered and to make matters worse he had been unveiled by the one individual who happened to be closest to his target.
Wonderful. Not.
Shifting his gaze backwards slowly, he just about caught the furball in his peripheral vision and released a small sigh. It wasn't so much a sigh of defeat as one of acceptance - he had been discovered. When the raccoon was done stealing more of his hair he would find another more suitable location to watch from and wouldn't let his guard down in future...even if he had to start eating tree bark. That being said he couldn't fathom why the fluffball would be in pursuit of his hair again when it was in such a condition, he could guarantee her mistress would run for the hills at that offering.
"A pleasure to see you again, Raccoon." He offered coarsely. As was to be expected his voice had grown hoarse through true lack of use, he'd never really had the opportunity to break it back in when he'd returned so it would be accurate to assume it had grown worse. Luckily he could be happy in the knowledge that he didn't sound too much like a frog just yet and more so like a disgruntled hermit. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?" he enquired casually.

Well, at least on one point they were in agreement; Raccoon's face was crinkling with disgust almost as soon as she landed at the combination of body odor and skanky hair. The idea of bringing any back to Mistress was laughable and completely out of the question; heck, she wouldn't be able to return herself until she'd thoroughly washed.
However, she was no retiring flower, unwilling to take on a bit of dirt. Remaining as she was and clinging to the mane, she squared her shoulders and met Feng's gaze full on as he turned about, fixing him with her most imperious gaze in response to his inquiry. At least he wasn't playing stupid...then again, she had like Red One from their previous encounters, even if he DID annoy Mistress a bit.
Right now though, she wasn't going to cut him any slack, liking or not. After all, he was Someone Else, and as Someone Else he owed her an explanation. A GOOD explanation.
On that note, she slid to the ground off of Feng's shoulder, taking a fistful of his mane for good measure once she'd alighted before launching into a fierce frenzy of chittering, gesturing at Feng himself, then around at the area, then pointing the direction of the clearing Anelisse called home, pointing at Feng's general state of unkemptness, miming the whole 'skulking around' thing, and finally shutting up to give Feng a look that very clearly awaited an answer.
Who needed words to talk?

Fenghuang did, in fact right now he would have been more than happy to have both soquili and raccoon in his company so that he did receive some form of translation. Unfortunately his luck was not with him today and as a consequence he was forced to endure her chittering and the loss of yet more hair. Honestly though, the removal of some of the clumps (while sore) had it's advantages in the sense that they couldn't gather and become stuck with more hair. She'd done him a favour even if she had added in it as some form of punishment.
Nevertheless the stallion followed her with his eyes, his head turning to watch. She was chittering alright and her miming was unbelievably fast. He hadn't lived with her since birth and was soon furrowing his brow in concentration. Suffice to say this concentration was not enough though as he was thoroughly lost by the time she had come to a halt and was staring at him expectantly. He would have graced her with a response (he was brought up with manners at least) but at present the only response he could think of was 'huh' which was hardly the most satisfactory or dignified of responses for either of them to accept.
It was with this in mind that the stallion remained quiet. His gaze dropped to the right in thought and he slowly recounted various bits of her miming. He couldn't remember it all and to be entirely honest he could barely seperate one point from another she'd been so fast. Eventually he simply couldn't figure it out and he slowly shook his head. His pale gaze flicked back towards the tiny creature before him and he released a sigh, needless to say his response was going to go down like a house on fire.
"Could you do that again?" he requested softly, his brow furrowing. "Only... slower. I didn't catch it all," he explained.

So much for him being a sensible and understanding type. Upon seeing the look of total confusion slowly overtake Red One's face, Raccoon could only sigh and make a huffy little impatient noise. Honestly, what was the world coming to when a clearly gestured explanation went by without being understood.
But she was patient. She was the most patient and understanding of creatures, and she would give Red One the benefit of the doubt once again. After all, the last time she'd thought he'd understood her, he had wound up aggrieved and in pain. It had taken Mistress and her amazing understanding of conversation styles to make sense of that muddle, but Raccoon couldn't' bank on Mistress right now. Even if she was HANDY, the last thing Mistress needed was to see Red One now before Raccoon had determined whether or not he was a threat!
So she started over, very slowly and very deliberately pointing at Feng, then at the surrounding, then shrugging her shoulders to indicate her confusion as to why he was there, then pointing towards the clearing where Anelisse slept, back to Feng, raising a brow at him in a querying way, and then lapsing into silence to give him a chance to explain. One thing at a time, after all...

When it was done slowly, her mime was much easier to understand. It wasn't black and white in terms of what she meant but he could place together the clues far more easily. She was clearly confused as to his presence in the area, perhaps even unhappy with it given how she had launched at him earlier. Admittedly he had no grounds to disapprove of this action given that he had been slinking around in a rather uncouth manner but still... Her gesture towards her mistress could have been taken in one of two ways. Either she wanted him to come with her or she was unhappy at how close he was to her - did she really hate him that much? He hadn't exactly spoken to her since.
Piecing together the various pieces of information, the gestures and the mimes he came to the conclusion that she was infact asking him for his reasons for being in the area. There was of course one very specific reason for his appearance in the area but to speak of it with the mare's confidante would have been much the same as shooting yourself in the foot. His expression clouded at the prospect of explaining that and after a few moments he permitted a snort to pass through his nostrils. The tressles of hair tumbling over his eyes to shroud them from view for the time being.
Looking so unkempt had it's advantages, on occasions it made an individual difficult to read and as it were, the muscular red male was particularly glad to take on this appearance at the moment. The raccoon was undeniably suspicious and sought answers in order to keep her mistress secure. Fenghuang acted in much the same manner, a barrier against the world though it was a duty that he had taken without request - he just did it.
"You are either enquiring as to why I am here, or you are informing me that your mistress is over that way," he croaked at last and rolled his shoulders, loosening the matted hair so that the reindeer pelt could ripple more comfortable across his back. "I like it here," he explained flatly having no desire to mince his words. He suspected that chittering would only cause further suspicion anyway.

Hallelujah, he'd understood. Obviously the trick was to go alone slow and steady, then you were BOUND to be understood if you were sensible and as easy to understand as Raccoon. There was a lesson to be learned here, not just for Raccoon but for all Mute Miming Miniatures the whole forest through!
However, she wasn't about to let her pleasure at being properly understood distract her from the Facts at Hand, which included the extremely unsatisfactory answer she'd just been given. At his answer of "why I am here", she had shaken her head vigorously, a bright beaming smile on her face, only to have that same smile turn into a very pronounced and scolding frown at the rather blase 'because I like it here'.
Silly Red One, there was no reason NOT to like it here, but that hardly excused Suspicious Behavior. Suspicious behavior that he was continuing to indulge in, what with his hiding behind his hair and all. What he needed was a good braid, or even a ponytail...AFTER he had a good wash. But as she didn't have the time to finagle such pleasantries, she merely made a face and snorted at that answer, then proceeded to point out the flaws.
Making a 'no' gesture with her arms, she flopped down onto all fours in an imitation of a Soquili, curving down her bushy tail for good measure. Some of the long red hairs she'd pulled from Feng's mane she tucked behind her ears and allowed to stream down about her face, clearly identifying the Soquili in question of Feng himself. Satisfied on that count, she promptly scuttled into the bushes, only to peek out her nose and eyes in a masterful NinjaRaccoon way. She then scuttled to another shrub, peering back over her shoulder to make sure she wasn't followed, then ducked to hide behind Feng himself before diving into another shrub.
Having completed this particularly brilliant (if she did say so herself) mime, she burst out of the bushes, shaking off the hair and making a very pronounced 'Well??' gesture at Feng. She was waiting for an explanation of his sneaking around, and it had better be a good one, ayup!

The images of NinjaRaccoon would forever be burnt into his memory, the manner in which she acted causing him to release a roar of laughter that seemed out of place in the tranquility of the surrounding woodland. Her entire charade had been easy enough to understand, he had quickly discovered that the raccoon was pretending to be him and after watching her flit back and forth he was beginning to understand. The cogs of his mind turned and creaked slowly as he translated the little act and yet, it wasn't long before his laughter died down and the half smile appeared on his lips again. If he didn't know any better the raccoon was enquiring as to why he was in the area and 'liking' it was not a viable excuse. Really - Anelisse should have been incredibly proud to have such an ingenius creature at her disposal.
With the ghost of the smile upon his lips he remained silent and merely gazed through his tattered mane towards the creature. He would provide credit where it was due, she had sought him out and she was apparently doing it for admirable reasons. There was no risk of his hair being stolen so much as a concern for his existence. In retrospect he suspposed that his behaviour was questionnable and there was little doubt in his mind that had his brothers been aware of it he would have been slapped. Even he could admit it wasn't the most gentlemanly of acts, or at least it wasn't terribly polite when one was incapable of reading his thoughts and entering the depths of his mind. His heart was in the right place though - he could argue this much.
The stallion released a sigh through his already partially parted lips and clucked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Azure eyes continued to regard the raccoon for quite some time as he mulled over the most appropriate response. His blase response hadn't gone down well but he sincerely doubted the real response would go down well either! Rolling his shoulders the stallion moved away from the place he had been standing and approached another bush, nipping at a few leaves as though he had decided that she didn't warrant a response and therefore wouldn't receive one. However, after this considerable delay he did open his mouth and croak out yet another reply that wasn't necessarily any better than the first.
"As I said, I like this place..." he glanced over his shoulder at the expectant raccoon and arched a brow, a movement that caused his forelock to slide away from his eyes and to caress his cheeks. "Your mistress hates me - save us both a headache if she doesn't know I'm here." That was an appropriate response in his opinion, he had elaborated on his blunt one from before and it sounded genuine. To make things even better it was entirely true as well...just not the whole truth.

Wewt. Red One might be a little slow right out of the gate, but he showed significant promise with a little encouragement. As long as he was eased slowly into things, he wasn't really that stupid after all, and there was hope for proper communication.
At least, there was promise for proper communication as long as he didn't keep stubbornly reverting to canned 'non-answers'. At Red One's first repeat, Raccoon gave another dismissive snort, eying him with the same intensity she would eye a crafty crayfish under a riverbank. She might be a loving, adorable, and utterly wonderful creature that inspired nothing but love and affection in those around her, but she was also a Worldly, Practiced, and Combat-Ready Familiar to a mare that, when she felt like it, could be VERY uncommunicative. If Raccoon could get something out of Mistress when she was being taciturn, then she ought to be able to get something out of anyone else, period.
Much to her relief, though, Red One continued on after the banal 'I like it here'. That much was good, although his follow-through inspired yet another snort. Honestly, she didn't know where this Soquili got their weird ideas from half the time; Mistress doubting her own amazingness, Red One thinking Mistress hated him when Mistress was the epitome of all that was good and tender...Mistress causing ANYONE a headache...
Though Fenghuang would likely find Raccoon induced even more of a headache than Anelisse. After the huff, Raccoon had immediately burst into indignant and dismissive chittering, shaking her head vehemently at the idea of Mistress hating OR being a headache. Marching up to Feng, she tugged on his mane to make sure he was paying attention to her (as he was too tall for her to swat his nose from the ground), then chittered again, shaking a scolding finger at him at the same time.
However, after a short while she rethought that strategy. Perhaps he was feeling over-abused because of...some tragedy in his past life. Or maybe he was feeling victimized because of the way Mistress had gotten mad at him last time, never mind that she HAD been somewhat justified in getting grouchy and besides, he should be HAPPY that getting mad had made her happy again and not waste his time getting grungy and mopey and emo. Having come to that conclusion, she broke off on the chittering and went a different route. Crossing her arms over her chest, she cocked a brow at Feng and chirruped something very much in the tone of "are you SUUUUURE?"

In Fenghuang's defence it had never really been necessary for him to learn how to play charades at a young age. Nor had he really required it while he socialised in the lowlands either. Throughout his travels he'd only ever needed it here and when he had initially met the first creatures he had communicated with up north. Even then they both moved slowly and deliberately to make sure they were understood as opposed to being chittered at continuously in the hopes that he may either speak chitter or a miracle would occur and it would all just click! Had Fenghuang known her thought processes he would have pointed this out and he probably wouldn't have done it without a great deal of tact - he was shattered after all and cranky men were never pleasant.
Of course it didn't help that Raccoon was decidedly biased too - for all her adorable and admirable qualities no one could deny that she was fiercely loyal and as a consequence somewhat blind. Whether the fluffbutt liked it or not, Anelisse gave Fenghuang a rather huge headache for a multitude or reasons and no amount of chittering or arguing on Raccoon's behalf would change that, if anything it would make it worse. As if to prove this he squinted somewhat when she tugged on his mane, the tell tale signs of a rising headache throbbing in his temples as she launched into another spiel. Evidently his answer hadn't been sufficient for her. The stallion did have to concede that had he never met Anelisse he probably would have found this all highly entertaining but right now...
Urgh.
He blinked a few times and refocused his gaze on the raccoon with a small sigh. It took him a double take to wonder if he had heard what he thought he had. It was a chirrup of course, but the red stallion could have sworn that she had gotten the tone so right that it simply didn't need words. Apparently she wasn't going to let this drop but as the sun was fastly rising and he had yet to finish his breakfast he really didn't have the time to humour her. There was only so much he could say and with self preservation in mind he wouldn't say a lot of it. Another sigh and he fixed his almost weary gaze on the raccoon more clearly, his expression somewhat strained.
"Honestly Raccoon, what is it that you want from me?" he asked at last, "What do you want me to say?"

Honestly, Soquili could be so insanely obnoxious when they wanted to be, it was a wonder that the world's familiars didn't simply go mad from the headache of trying to deal with them. Or maybe that was why familiars tended to stick close to their Bondeds; because everyone else was a headache to deal with.
Such were Raccoon's thoughts after seeing Red One once again revert into the stoic solemnity she'd just dragged him out of, and she couldn't help but punctuate her thoughts with a wry shake of her head and stamp of one small furry foot. What she WANTED from him was a proper explanation that didn't involve dancing around the point, and a bit of sensible behavior. Like, maybe a concession that Mistress was wonderful and he was hanging around because he was honestly worried about her welfare, etc etc etc. Or at least an apology for his shifty behavior and an offer to make amends by letting Raccoon give him a much-needed shampooing.
Normally, Raccoon had no qualms about her inability to Speak. When dealing with Mistress, she had never had even the faintest problem with being understood, and as their social circle was rather limited, her unique method of communicating had never been put to the test. In those rare occurrences where someone else was around, Mistress was a more than capable translator. This meeting, though, was a whole new frustration and even Raccoon was not able to wholly dismiss the frustration.
Sighing again, she flopped onto the ground, leaning against one of Feng's forelegs as she tried to consider how best to answer that question. What, indeed???

Raccoon and Fenghuang were one in the same when it came to their stubborness, it may not necessarily have been for the same reasons but they were being just as difficult. While Raccoon sought only to protect her mistress and keep strangers in check, Fenghuang was after a number of things. Sure, he had long since sworn to keep Anelisse safe because she was utterly clueless and couldn't do it herself but in terms of his own survival he was tired, hungry and thirsty. He wasn't about to negotiate with a disgruntled furball when he was in this position...particularly when he was a far enough distance away from Anelisse to neither be seen or heard. As far as he was concerned, Anelisse's bubble world would ensure she remained oblivious to his existence.
That in mind, Fenghuang had never exactly done anything to harm Anelisse while he was here had he? Excluding the time in which he had thrown her about in the river; which might he add, was done for a reason. Really if he had wanted to take advantage of the mare he would have done it by now instead of playing stalker for weeks. She wasn't that strong, she was completely vulnerable and any creature worth half a cent could see that! So why in the name of the gods was her bonded so intent on disturbing him?
...He hadn't lied when he said he enjoyed it here.
Releasing another of his sighs he glanced down at his hoof as the furball rested her back against it. She was once again unsatisfied by his response and appeared to be disgruntled. In a manner of speaking he felt for her, she couldn't express herself fully in his presence and therefore trying to get her point across was a feat of strength in itself. However, this sympathy did not override Fenghuang's desire to keep himself safe in all aspects...self confidence included. Consequently he lowered his head to n** at the tips of the grass and furrowed his brow while the raccoon continued to dwell on matters.
"Raccoon do I honestly need any other reason to stay here other than enjoying what it has to offer?" He enquired at last, his expression wry.

Now he was just being cruel, asking her to explain something that obviously needed more detail than a simple head nod or shake. It might theoretically be a yes or no question, but after their earlier "conversation" he had to know that she was not going to let him off that easily. Consequently, the only response he got to his query was another deep sigh and an increased slouch as she flopped down further onto the ground, resembling nothing at the moment so much as a sack of meal haphazardly braced against the orange stallion's leg.
But after a few minutes, she straightened up and once again turned to look at him, crossing her arms over her chest and giving him her most imposing look. If he wanted to play games, that was his business, and she still thought he was hiding something; but as long as he behaved himself, she would let him be mysterious all he wanted. It was probably better to have him lurking around than a more unsavory type...though she really had no way of knowing if he himself was really that 'wholesome' himself. Still...
Chittering again, she gave him an accepting shrug, then raised her fist in warning, pointing once again in the direction of Anelisse and giving him a 'if something happens to her you will suffer' sort of look. He was astute enough that he should get at least the literal meaning, and hopefully take the hint.
Having him handy might be helpful as well, seeing as how Mistress wanted to talk to him. Not right now, obviously, what with him being in such a state, but hopefully soon.
Though on that note...tilting her head, Raccoon very deliberately eyed Feng from head to toe, then wrinkled her face and held her nose in an unmistakable sign of 'man but you stink' before very deliberately pointing to the river. Having found him, the least she could do was contribute to making him presentable again...or at least smellable!

Both moves had been completely obvious to him, Raccoon's facial expression alone would have been enough without pointing when it came to Anelisse. He had long since been aware of the tiny fluffballs love for her mistress as well as that protective edge. Like a mother hen, he suspected that Raccoon would bustle round Anelisse and do her utmost to chase away any foe that may attempt to harm her. Admittedly in some circumstances he suspected this probably wouldn't work, particularly if the predator could devour raccoon whole but it was the thought that counted. Rest assured, he was left with no doubt in his mind about the messages that she was attempting to convey to him when she finally dropped the attempts to figure out why he was still here. In a manner of speaking, her sudden surrender worked out better for both of them. He kept his dignity (sort of) and she had at least figured out who the mystery stallion was in her forest.
"You have my word I will not hurt her," he replied solemnly, his expression grave. Even beneath the grime it was evident that he wasn't lying, he was no politician and he had been raised better. Telling lies wasn't his strong point and that was why he preferred to provide vague and elusive answers. If they were vague he wasn't strictly lying, he just wasn't providing the individual with a reply they considered to be 'enough'. Raccoon had been subject to this and by now could probably vouch for him in that department. "I promise, she will be safe." He added as though further confirmation was required.
Frankly that was the entire reason he was here but he wasn't going to admit that.
However when he finally came to addressing her other remark he did roll his eyes a little and deliberately snorted in her direction so that the dried mud could give her a very delicate coating of dust. Really, they said he lacked tact and yet he wasn't the one pinching his nose and making strange sounds to indicate that he thought he needed a bath. He'd known this for weeks but he had done it for a reason and just because one little fluffball thought he was unbearable wasn't going to make him change that!
"Yes, I know I stink..." he pointed out coolly and shook his head. "However I'm a lot harder to see in this state and the smell keeps predators away, it does the job and I didn't say you had to stick around, did I?" he enquired stubbornly.
