Hello and welcome Beginners To Roleplaying

This is just a simple run-over about how to roleplay. there will be addings of this, so check this a few times to see what might be new. Crew members might also be lending a hand to this post.

So lets start off with a FAQ (frequently asked questions) type of thing;

What is RolePlaying? RolePlaying, RPing for short, is much like creating your own story, but with other people. RPers (roleplayers) both work cooperatively and create one large story of some sort.
Why RP? Well, RPing actually benefits in some ways. one is t being more 'literate'; it helps with your grammar most the time, as well as your thinking skills and creativity. Its also a social benefit, if youre being conductive with other people.
What is needed for a RP? Just a few basics are needed to make a simple or general RPG (roleplay game). These include a Storyline, Rules, and characters. Of course, with more advanced RPs comes more advanced subjects needed, but well start with these first.

I cant think of any good questions at the moment, so im going to explain a few other things.
RPing, although most the time is much literate or advanced, does have small levels to it. not many people actually "stay" on these levels once they are better with things.

For RPing, there is the classic **....
Quote:
*waves* hi

this is a beginning mark of RolePlaying. you might do things like this in Towns, Virtual Hollywood, or Rally, or some other chatty place. People Dont really bother in RPs with these, so you most likely wont see these in the guild unless for a better practice, or in this guide.
People then start to type out a little bit more, and often might come out in simple sentences. People will begin to use First person, or most the time third person.
Quote:
I waved at everyone, and said hi

OR
Quote:
Bob waved at everyone and said hi

Very simple, vague, and straight. from the veiws of first person, or third person, its the same, but will have to vary when it depends on the story, or the character veiw you might be playing. Also, notice when the samples speak, "hi", there are no qoutation marks ( " " ). for this level of RPing, having no qoutes is going to be often. That sometimes confuses the other person or reader of the RP.
Also, please note; Most people, when being as we call "illterate" have no signs of proper grammar. the above examples are of proper grammar, so most likely you will see things like so;
Quote:
I wavd @ every1 n sed hi

No "txt speak", please. that actually tends to be annoying and it really confuses people. thats the last thing we need; more confusion.

So, we moved from simple ** speak to one-sentence RPing. doing something as simple as that makes things a bit bland; straight-forward; boring. to make things more fun and interesting, we like to use a little somethign called Detail. Adding detail makes people think more advanced, and it shows your level of creativity as well.
so instead of
Quote:
I went to the front of the room, waved, and said "hi"

we might get something like
Quote:
I stood up from where i was sitting. i moved my feet one by one, ailently pacing myself as I could feel eyes on my from attention. From what seemed like forever, i finally made myself move to the front og the room, while others sat and watched. i slowly rose my hand to the same leve as my head. i gestured a welcoming, swinging my hand from side to side, waving at the people that were before me. my lips curved at the end, forming a small but sure smile. my teeth felt a gust of air as i took a breath and then spoke quietly.
"hi" was a simple yet straight word that came from me, and i watched quietly, waiting to see what would happen next.

more detailed. It also adds a better point of veiw. instead of stating the obvious, it breaks the statement into little bits, detailing almost every moment that was happening; slowly and surely. It seems hard to put somethign like this. but if youre RPing in first person, or even in third person, think about the whole thing. think about the little things that happen while youre talking, or walking, or doing something of some sort. its not going to be a simple wave and hello. youre going to feel people stare at you. youre going to feel a bit nervous as you make that move in front of that many people. Think of it in bits and parts, then put the parts together.

Ok, so we have a basic as to being a better, more literate RPer; lets try to work on other things, like profiles for characters, storylines, and interacting with other RPers.

Yeah you got most of it. The basics of general posts, that is. We should also do specific points in case those situations arise in the various rp. Like fighting. It will happen eventually, so I'm here to give some pointers on battle roleplay for those of you who've never done it.

Roleplaying is sort of like typing out a story. Fighting is the exact same way. Don't just type:

"I hit you."

While it's short and direct and gets the point across, it's also boring and for most of us, we sort of see it as cheating. Put some depth into it, but don't turn a simple punch into a 5-page essay. Spice it up a little, make the person reading it picture that punch in all its glory.

"Random Person 1 crouched slightly, balling his right hand into a fist as he pulled it back, his other arm extended outward, palm facing Random Person 2. Person 1 grinned at 2, taking a step forward as he rushed towards his foe, bringing his balled fist up towards Person 2's jaw."

See? Not only does that image look amazing in your head, it's a detailed enough post that it gives the other person a choice to take the hit and retaliate, or step away and avoid the hit. It makes for thrilling battles and generally keeps everyone happy because they're not getting half-hearted posts.

Think of it as a novel, writing a little bit at a time, and the inspiration comes easily.

That's all I can think of, I don't think there's much else I can post here about this.

o-o; well not everyone is going to want to PM you and wait for a response. this is just something to help them get started. PMs they might use for more personal and specific questions. just saying....

Ok, so we have some basics on how to say things and RP a bit more literate in general, lets try to work on how to really RP with other people, whether its 1x1 (one on one) or multi-person RP.
For a 1x1 RP, its pretty simple. Youre interacting with one person and one person only. Its pretty simple, just respond to what they might have for their character.

Quote:
Bob turned around and saw an old friend and ran over to him/her, waving happily. "Hey, whats going on?" he said, smiling.

In this case; Bob is the person youre RPing with, and the "old friend" is you and your character. So you might want to respond like so.

Quote:
Jesse smiled back and waved. "Its going pretty good. havent talked with you in a while." Jesse said to Bob.

The whole idea of 1x1 RPing, is just having a conversation with one person, but you add third person to it, somehow, and then just add your story to it.

Multi-person RPing is a bit different, but with the same basics. You just interact with more than one person. You just have to be careful with what you might say Make sure you include as many people as you can, and just be careful and check if someone else might have posted while youre typing. thats a common mistake, and people get a bit confused sometimes. In that case, check while typing your post, and/or edit your post just to work along with it.

Quote:
Samantha was sitting under the tree by herself, sighing as she leaned her back against the bark of the tree. she wondered how long the days were going to be for her, and what would happen, after the child that is kicking in her womb, was born.

Quote:
Jesse saw that Samantha was by herself in the field under a tree, and slowly walked over to her, seeing something in her facial expression. "Hey, you alright Sam?" He asked, approaching her slowly but surely.

In this case, you are Bob. you see a friend and go over to her, talking to her and starting a conversation. Then someone else comes into the conversation, WHILE Samantha is talking with you as well.

Quote:
Bob came from almost nowhere, smiling and waving as he saw an old friend, approaching him with a happy face. "Hey Jesse! Hows it going?" he said, completely ignoring the woman who was there as well.

Quote:
Samantha turned her head to see Jesse, and smiled softly. "Im alright Jesse, thanks. How are you?" she asked politely.

The posting usually depends on who posted first, but in this case Bob did, so you can try to either talk with Samantha first, or Bob. Here usually when one person posts first, you talk to them first. Its a bit hard, but try to go back and forth with your two conversations.

Quote:
Jesse turned his head to see Bob waving and smiling, and waved back. "hey Bob. long time no see." he said, smiling back. he then turned back to Samantha and nodded. "Anytime. and im Fine." he said, then paused. "Oh, Bob, this is my good friend Samantha. She is a nice woman." he said to Bob, then turned to Samantha. "Sam, this is my old friend Bob. been his friend since we were kids."

This way, you can bring them both into conversation, and that way it wont be you as the middle person, and it helps with any confusing problems.

Now of course, like most RPs, they will be having a set-up needed for people to follow and go along with in the RP. Things like Introduction, Rules, Character Layouts, Etc. Just about any of the posts you see the Host RPer make before opening the RP. Most will have basic ones, others will be more specific or advanced.
We will list just a couple of some basics with a small description to them

Introduction: Here will most likely be the beginning of the story, the basic of the RP, or the general aspect of the RP itself. Introduction is used to capture the reader and have them interested in RPing of course. its to let the reader understand what kind of RP it is, whats in it, etc. So if youre attempting to make a RP of your own, be sure to have something like this, or else youre not going to have many or interesting people join it.

Rules: Just about every RP should have Rules. Rules are just what the Host RPer wants you to follow in the RP. Just like rules for anything else, they are to be followed or else youre not going to be really happy with any possible consequences, such as if you wouldnt follow the rules of the Guild. Rules are just meant to keep the RP intact, active, and not going far off with other types of junk or any problems.

Characters; Layouts and Profiles: Most the time you see someone have a type of set-up, or a layout for you to follow when making a character. Things like Username, RPC(RolePlay Character)name, etc. usually show there and are put in a code. the code type is for you to copy if someone wishes it to be a specific kind. Sometimes people will just ask that you have a layout made, whether its following one from them or not.
As for the profiles, they usually list the profiles that are sent to them in a post. that way you can see other characters in there on the same page. Other RPs, like basic "lets RP here!" type of things, will just as you post your own RPC wherever you may want to start. That works too, but sometimes you get confused as to who joined after a while.

Other: Other is a section for just about anythign else in the RP thast not mentioned in any of the other posts. Sometimes Other may not be there, but Things like "Announcements", "Affiliates", or any other thing might be there. Other is sometimes used to a combination of a lot of things, like maybe one part of the other will be announcements, and then affiliates, and then maybe when the RP might open. just basics in one general topic.

Other things you might see in RPs;
White List/Black List:The white list is just a list of people who have contributed to the RP, helped out the person/Host RPer, or is of great help for some sort of thing. Black list is opposite. Black list includes people who continuously break the rules, annoy the host RPer, annoy any of the other RPers, or pushed themselves a little too far.
Table of Contents: Sometimes they will have a table of contents to let you know whats next as well, so look for those too. they might have it in the first post, they might have it in all posts, but its just used to show whats in it and whats expected to be read in each section.

There are plenty other things to be seen, but are either rarely sen, or much more advanced. This is just a beginners guide, so were working on basic things to help you out.
