I love White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes. The first time I heard it, it was TripleJ's featured album of the week. I was in the car. I cranked up the volume, got into the back, lay across the seats, closed my eyes and let it fill me.
You have to understand that I am not traditionally a musically-inclined person. I never really listen to music. I like to have it going in the background, because I find silence to be really awkward. So when you hear me say something like "I love this band" or "I really like that song", I mean it in a shallow superficial sense. I don't take in music. I am, in fact, for all intents and purposes, basically tone deaf. I can't pick up all those nuances in fine music. Maybe this is why I don't take a powerful, or even vaguely deep interest in music. Maybe this is also the reason that I found White Winter Hymnal to be so powerful to me, for it's relatively simple sounds.
Often when I listen to a song and I really feel it "move" me, it's a one time thing. It's all to do with my mood and the events of the day, my mindset, and maybe if it's the first time I ever heard it. When I hear the song again, I won't feel anything for it. It's just noise.
This wasn't the case with WWH. Everytime I hear that song, no matter what I'm doing, I just stop, sit or lie down, close my eyes and listen to the music. I've burnt a lot of food this way, but I still go on like this. I love the flow of the music. I love the rhythm. I love the words. I love how deceptively simple it all is. But most of all, I love the imagery cast by the song, both by words and music. For me, it casts up images both abstract and sensible, and always as beautiful as I find the song. Once, while PMSing, I was actually brought to tears. Which is really embarrassing for me to admit, because I hate crying, so try not to dwell to much on that. xD
In any case, I think it's pretty obvious by this point that this is, to me, the greatest song ever created. I've always hated cliches, especially the bad ones, but there's no other way to describe this song to me. It speaks to me.
Here's the discussion. Something light, but heavy in how up-close-and-personal it is. It's also a thinly veiled request for song recs. But anyway. Discuss:
Music that affects you as strongly as this, or similarly. Music that you think is powerful in composition, even if it may not overwhelm you so obviously Other things along this theme?

Occasionally, when I finally find those songs again. I don't remember quite exactly which ones, but everytime it comes up while I'm donig something (usually homework) I put everything down, close my eyes, and listen. Haha~ Quite similar. xd
I sometimes try to concentrate on the beat at one time, then another time, maybe a certain instrument.

I'm like that too. redface But the song Tuesday Morning by Melissa Etheridge about Mark Mark Bingham makes me cry every time. I don't normally like songs about 9/11, but this one is truly spectacular. I couldn't find it on YouTube though. =(

Memories of Light and Waves is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard. I can play it, and sometimes, I even get emotional....while I'm playing it. sweatdrop
