A weak ledge. That was all it took to bring him down, one ledge... Arbre groaned and twisted sideways. Nothing broken, but how it hurt! And how long had he lain here? When had he fallen? Hush now, my little one, don't say a word... No! He had to stay sane, had to stay awake, not drift off. Mama's going to get you a mockingbird... Arbre struggle upright and nearly screamed aloud at the pain. Still nothing broken, but his wounds... all that blood, was it his? The rocks, the rocks, and the trees, he must have bounced and rolled a few times...
With a groan, Arbre sank back down and closed his eyes. It was all going to be all right, his mother was there, and his mate, how beautiful she was, the way she had looked when he first met her...
"I thought you were dead," he murmured weakly, "forgive me."

Abalis huddled in a small hollow between two rocks at the bottom of a steep incline; one that could probably be called a cliff with little resistance. He was crouched within the small space, trembling quietly, watching with wide eyes the green and white male that had crashed down the cliff only moments ago. Red was seeping out to mix with the green and white. Where was it coming from? Why was it there?
Could the dragon survive if all of it came out?
It was covering the rocks on the ground between them, coming closer and closer to where Abalis hid. He couldn't just sit there... He had to help the male, even if the only reason was that... if the other dragon died... Abalis would never be able to leave... He'd never be able to walk - no, he wouldn't be able to RUN - past that body...
Whatever he did, he would have to do it soon... Aba didn't know much about injuries like the green male's, but he felt certain that the dragon wouldn't - COULDN'T - survive much longer...
Time passed. Abalis took a small step forward. More time passed, and he crept out of his hiding place. Slowly, taking baby steps, Abalis inched nearer to the hurt dragon. He winced at his first step in the other dragons blood, the scarlet liquid darkening the orange fur of his paws to a shade of red. He moved more quickly then, getting closer and closer to the male.
"S-Sir?" Abalis asked aloud, not sure the male could hear him but knowing he had to at least try, "a-are you okay?" No, Duh. "A-are you alive?" Definitely more accurate.

"S-sir?" A small voice, not his mothers or his mates or his sisters... Arbre smiled slightly to himself. Always surrounded by females. His mate always wanted daughters, but he wanted sons, and they'd spend many an evening bickering, watching the sunset from the entrance to his cave...
"A-are you alive?" Definitely not his mother. Not- Arbre popped his eye open and tried to struggle to his feet with a small growl before collapsing back down. Oh, how he ached. But... he squinted at small dragon in front of him. No, no member of his family had ever looked like that.
"I'm alive," he muttered weakly, keeping one eye trained on the infant. Just a little pebble, all that undeveloped potential. But where were his parents? They must be nearby. Maybe they're with my mate.

Abalis cringed and nearly let out a sob of surprise as the male lurched upward and then back down.
"I'm alive," the male answered, and Abalis trembled with relief and terror. The male was alive, but Abalis didn't know how to help. And he couldn't just run away... He couldn't leave this dragon to die... But how could Abalis help? He was just a little hatchling.
Abalis scrambled away, over the rocks. He moved quickly, but he wasn't running. There was a small pool a short distance away, in a small ravine. Abalis looked around in panic, wondering how he'd ever be able to bring water over to the male. The green dragon was covered in dirt, as well as blood, and without a clear idea of what else he should do, the little hatchling had decided to at least try to clean him up a little bit and get some of the red off.
Because somehow he knew... the red was dangerous.
Finally, Abalis found a small, bowl-shaped stone, laying against a boulder, as if waiting for him. It wouldn't hold much, but it would hold something. Desperately, Abalis rolled in the pool as well, letting the water soak into his own fur. He'd drip on the way over, but any water he could bring to the injured dragon would be good...
Abalis scrambled back quickly, but carefully so that he wouldn't spill any of the water in the bowl of stone. "S-sorry sir," he whispered as he returned after setting the bowl gently on the ground beside the green male. "I-I went to go get water..."
For a horrible instant, Abalis wondered if the male had died in the hatchling's absence. But no, there was the miniscule movement of his chest; he was still breathing.
With only a very vague idea of what he should be doing, Abalis shook his fur out over the male, then carefully poured some of the water from the bowl over the green dragon's shoulder, where a large gash was steadily pouring out blood. That seemed to be the worst injury, and the place where all of the red was coming from... ((Hope you don't mind I kind of picked the place for Arbre's injury sweatdrop ))

Where do you want to go?
I want to hang from the moon when it's almost gone, and I want to throw down all the stars, and I want them to light up everybody so that they're all better.
You always were a healer. Nari...
Arbre, I'm dead, wake up!
Groggily, Arbre shivered slightly as water hit him, and blinked at the small dragon. He was awake now, painfully awake, but he didn't know how much longer that would last. "Listen," he said, "little one. Pebble. Water... water is good. But, but there are a few more things you need to do..." he paused and closed his eyes, thinking back to his days as a Student, especially those spent with the Gemstones. And the things he had learned from Nari. "Mud," he said at last, "mud and leaves, press them into my wounds. Press hard, it'll stop the bleeding." Weakly, he lifted his head and drank from the bowl.
"Thank you," he said before drifting back off to sleep.

Abalis shyed away as the the green dragon spoke. Mud. But mud will just get him dirtier... Abalis thought niavely. He was still in the stage of mind where 'clean' meant 'healthy'. He shook his head, a few remaining water drops scattering as he did so. This is no time to argue. He's an adult. He knows more than I do... I should do what he says.
Abalis ran back to the pool, the bowl once again clenched in his jaws. He knelt at the water's edge and felt the bottom, praying that... Yes! Mud! Mud was at the bottom of the pool! It had kind of a clay-type feel to it, but it was mud. Abalis filled the bowl with the mud and hurried back to the green dragons side. He set the bowl down gently, then ran back to the pool, where green vegetation thrived. He looked around doubtfully. There were so many kinds of leaves... What if some of the leaves were dangerous? Abalis had wandered into a patch of poison leaves once, and he'd had a rash for days. He'd nearly scratched off all of his fur... What if the little hatchling picked something like that and pressed it into the green dragon's injuries...?
But those leaves had white berry things on them, Abalis remembered, a look of determination coming into his eyes. Just stay away from anything that looks like that... The worst thing I could possibly do is nothing.
Quickly, Abalis gathered up a load of long, green, smooth leaves that looked like they would hold well. Thinking quickly, he also picked some thick, strong reeds, in case he had to tie the other kind of leaves to the green male's shoulder. He kept a weary eye out for white berries all the while.
Abalis ran back to the green dragon's side, careful not to drop a single leaf. He took a deep breath. Taking one of the smooth leaves in his paw, he cringed as he pressed it against the male's still-bleeding shoulder, nearly crying out himself.
(( "The worst thing I could possibly do is nothing." I swear I didn't steal that from my First Aid book in school, or anything. ninja
sweatdrop ))

Why won't you let me come with you? Just follow you down this tunnel.
No. Not yet. Wake up, beloved.
Arbre jerked awake as Abalis packed mud and leaves into his wound. What -? Oh. "Very good," he said weakly. "I think... I think I'll fall asleep again... don't be alarmed, I do not think it is time for me to die just yet." He chuckled weakly, then started to cough.
"Little one," he said, "would you like me to sing you a song?"

Abalis relaxed a bit as the green dragon began talking. Talking was good. When the other dragon was awake, he could help Abalis figure out what to do, and - in Abalis's way of thinking - it implied that the green male was not in any immediate danger of dieing. At least not for a few minutes more.
"If... If it'll keep you awake..." Abalis told the male as he continued to work over the wound. He'd like the green male to sing a thousand songs, if that would keep him alive.
The shoulder wound was - for the most part - packed with mud and leaves. Abalis took one of the reeds and wrapped it around the green male's shoulder, then pulled it tight to keep the pressure on. He clumsily knotted it, using his baby claws to pull the reed through loops of itself. Then he moved on to another injury that looked like it needed immediate attention. This one was on the male's side, and though it wasn't bleeding as much as the shoulder wound... It still didn't look very good.
How do I know how to do this? Abalis wondered to himself. How am I able to do this without passing out in fright, or running away?

Arbre grunted slightly as Abalis packed more leaves and mud into his wounds. "Let me think," he said, trying to remember one of the songs his mother had sung to him as a child. A lullaby, his favorite one. He had a gruff voice, not one suited to the song, but it would do.
"As the leaves fall, And the seasons turn, I'll still be here As the rocks and the stones.
"Hush now, not a word, In light and in shadow, I'll be here As the rocks and the stones.
"Follow the Mountain Road, Follow the Mountain Path, For I am there As the rocks and the stones."

"That's nice," Abalis commented absent-mindedly as he worked the leaves and mud into the wound on the green dragon's side. "The mountain road... What is that?"

"The Mountain Road..." Arbre watched the little one work out the corner of his eye. So close to Road and still nobody had heard of them? It was worse than he thought. "It... it is my pack," he said simply, "and also... also, up there. Do you see that ledge? From where I fell? The Road used to be in such good condition, I got careless, didn't look where I stepped... the Plague was a tough time for us.
"But tell me truly. You've never heard of us? Your parents never mentioned it?"

Abalis looked up at the ledge thoughtfully. "There's a road up there? Just looks like a big ole' cliff to me," he commented before going back to his work. He looked up again at the green dragon's next words.
"What's the plague?" Abalis asked innocently. He frowned. "No, I've never heard of you, or that road, or any plague... And..." He looked down quietly, absently poking his paw into the bowl of mud. "My parents... They've been gone for a long time... Since a few days after I hatched, I think... They went to go hunt, and... They didn't come back... I don't know what happened to them..." Abalis looked at the green male anxiously. "I've been okay though. There's a pool over there to drink water from, and there's a nest of mice in the corner of the cave I sleep in; there must be hundreds of them! And, I've been able to catch those okay, so, I'm alright... It's just..." He shrugged and went back to tending the green dragon's wounds. "I don't know where my parents are."

Arbre chuckled at the hatchling's comment on the road, but those chuckles soon faded. Abandoned. Or maybe the little one's parents were dead, or injured, or -
"Little one," Arbre said gently, "there is more to life than food and water, and you are very lucky to survive as long as you have. In a few days time, I will be well enough to travel, and if you wish I will take you back to my pack, the Mountain Road. I will alert the other Whetstones - that is, the scouts - that your parents are missing and they will search for them, but I do not think they will be found if they have been gone as long as you say.
"As to that cliff..." Arbre smiled gently. "That cliff is the road, and is well disguised so that only those who know of the start of the trail may find it. It is easier to see as a path from above.
"But, come now. I'll show it to you in a couple days, but you promise to stay as far away from the edge as possible, and stay behind me at all times. The path... it is not as it once was. It has been to long since it was last repaired, and I will be more cautious the next time I travel it."

Abalis frowned in confusion; he still hadn't been told what the plague was... But it sounded awful... What if it was some kind of wild monster? What if it had gotten his parents? The little hatchling looked down sadly, but looked up in surprise at the green dragon's offer to bring Abalis back to his pack.
"That... That would be good," Abalis nodded quietly, "and, if you'd really look for my parents... That'd be great... I promise to stay away from the edge." He looked up at the path doubtfully before commenting "it still just looks like a cliff to me... but if you say there's a road up there... I believe you."
Abalis continued his work, pressing the mud and leaves into the green dragon's wounds, securing them with the reeds when needed. ((Do we want to skip forward in time to where they're going back to Arbre's pack? Or do that in another rp? *shrugs* I'm fine with either. Or we could continue this for a little more...))

"I'm glad you do," Arbre said gently, "I'm glad you do. I think I might just rest a little while..." he yawned widely and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of his mate, talking to her as if she was still alive. He smiled slightly, they were going to have a son.
