It was really embarrassing when I was younger. I would mix Asian words that I thought were "English" and "commonly known Asian words (e.g. congee - I still think it's commonly known! More so than the Fujianese/minanhua term for it anyway. How would I have known that it was referred to as "porridge" in North America? It isn't sweet, NOT qualifying it as "porridge"!)
Either way, teachers and students would be confused by my words, and one teacher even marked me as "English as a second language," even though I'm perfectly fluent in English. OTL
