I already posted this under the lifestyle forum, but I decided to post it again here because I may get different tips. So, here's the story:

I got a Bonsai tree for my Birthday and I was just wondering if anyone had some care tips for me. It is a coniferous one. I know that it is suppose to be watered almost everyday, needs a lot of sunlight, and possibly some fertilizer in the summer/spring. So, if anyone has some tips for me I would be very greatful! I'm kinda a beginner when it comes to caring for plants. I tend to not want to prune it bc I think I'm hurting the plant. So I should hand prune the dead leaves? I'm kinda worried about my bonsai. It looks like it's getting dry and brittle, but I've been watering it. This may just be bc it's winter, but idk.

only use distilled water to water it. Bonsai can live for a long time and salts and stuff build up in the small pots easily

Most bonsai are intended to be treated the same way as their normal-sized cousins---which means, if the normal-sized tree grows outside in your climate, the bonsai should, too. Dry indoor air is really rough on coniferous bonsai.

If it was an outdoor plant and has been indoors, you can't just take it back outside again, the shock would not be good for it. So, if you think it should move outside, do it gradually----like from normal living space, to unheated space for a few days, then a few hours outside and back to the unheated space for a few days, gradually increasing the time outside until it can stay there.

It's a lot like babysitting!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips!! I'll have to wait a bit before I start putting it outside (there is still snow on the ground). smile But, I think some more sunlight would help. 3nodding
