January 109

Silversoul's tail twitched agitatedly. How much longer?

Patience, Silver. Iris Anderson leaned easily against the wall, her relaxed posture concealing her own impatience and excitement. Nine o'clock in front of the Hall, the side nearest the training field, near the doors. It's barely half-past-eight now.

Tell me again why we're so early. The five-year-old Gamma stood and paced in front of the doorway, half hoping someone would come emerge for him to snap at. Not that he would do such a thing.

Well if you're so bored of waiting, you may go hunt some rabbit and let me greet them alone, if you don't mind being delinquent. I'd like to be here if this Cassadaine is a more punctual type that I am. Not that it was likely. Iris prided herself on being more likely to show up fifteen minutes early than five minutes late. Not to mention she couldn't wait to meet the girl who'd be her Apprentice for the next year.

And if I'm not inclined to make a bad impression?

You stay right here.

Silversoul rolled his eyes and settled onto the snowy ground to wait. If they're not here by ten minutes to nine I will eat you, for making me waste so much time.

A quiet huff escaped Cassadaine Stephens as she followed the black and sliver wolf through the halls trying her best to keep the surprisingly hyper pup in sight. "Storm will you please slow down before we have another one of those incidents again... Another quiet huff as the pup looked over his shoulder at her and gave her a shy grin. Whatever it was that had gotten into that little ball of fluff surprised her and the more cautious part of her brain ( the not frequently used part ) was slightly afraid.

You said we'd be late if we didn't hurry~! Tail wagging as he wove through the halls the small black and silver pup slowed down long enough to look over his shoulder at his newly bonded companion. It had been less than a month since they'd bonded and while he did miss his siblings and mother, the human girl was interesting to be around. Rounding a corner the pup gave a high pitched squeal as his paws lost their grip, slipping on the remnants of ice. Yelping, Stormsong found himself slipping through the doorway and right toward Silversoul.

Shaking her head, Cassadaine could only sigh dragging a hand through her hair as she followed the path the pup had clawed and carved in the ice and snow in an attempt at righting himself before he crashed into the gamma.

Letting out a soft breath Cassadaine pulled a salute trying not to laugh at the situation her wayward bonded had found himself in.

Silversoul's irritation evaporated as a black and white blur came careening around the corner. You're safe, Iris, he said turning to her, but barely. They took their time... Still, he had a soft spot for pups, and couldn't stay disgruntled for long.

His bonded only gave the slightest hint of acknowledgment to his comment. Didn't Feralblood say the pup was a shy, frightened little thing?

Perhaps, why? the Gamma replied vaguely, his substitute for How should I know? He'd been too busy restraining his impulses to yip and yap and tackle the scary Alpha to listen to the details. An apprentice pair, and a little pup to follow him everywhere! The thought nearly rhymed.

Because-- "Silver!" she yelled aloud, too late. The shy, frightened little thing, also called Stormsong, slid headlong into Silversoul with a tremendous burst of snow.

Silversoul ceased his happy thoughts just long enough to widen his eyes before impact. His dignity ruined, he sprang up from his sprawled condition and glared at the smaller Gamma. Greetings, Stormsong. His voice held a touch of sternness, but was nevertheless warm and welcoming.

Iris smiled, glad the incident had blown completely over Silversoul's head. She hadn't expected much trouble in the first place, but one never knew with wolves... A slightly disheveled young woman came running after the pup, whom Iris took to be her new apprentice come to fetch up her bonded. Pulling her face into a semblance of formality, she stood a little straighter. "Greetings, Cassadaine."

"Greetings Private Anderson." The amusement was still there but the girl pulled herself straighter slipping into a more formal stance and tone. Cassadaine was all for fun and games but she knew when to tuck that facet of her personality away and get serious if only marginally so. "I'm honored that you're taking me as your apprentice."

Owww... Wincing the black and silver pup lay sprawled on his back in the snow but not for long as first the feel of someone staring at him for too long and too hard passed over him and then Silversoul's stern voice sounded. Rolling onto his stomach Stormsong tucked his tail under him, whatever remained of that burst of energy from earlier gone leaving the usually soft spoken and certainly not hyper pup he usually was behind. "Hello... His voice was soft and sounding far too shaky and far too feminine for any wolf to take him seriously, he was sure of it.

Silversoul settled back onto his haunches once again, regarding the pup with a gentle gaze, already growing fond of his new charge. Don't be afraid, little one. I am your new protector, he rather disliked the word patron, I won't hurt you. See, he is a shy, frightened little thing. What did I tell you?

Now it was Iris' turn to be annoyed. Silver she said warningly. Leaving him hanging, she turned to Cassadaine. "Not a problem, Cassy. Can I call you Cassy? We couldn't have a poor young rider be swept up by someone rather like Adrian Black, now could we?." She was doing her utmost best to make the girl comfortable. Poor thing was probably frightened sick at this strange new place.

Iris gave a warm, friendly smile, offering a hand. "I think we're going to get along wonderfully."

Are you sure...

Of course I know what I'm doing, silly. Look how Stormsong is frightened silly. They all start out this way.

Well, alright. Now why was he suddenly getting such a bad feeling about this?

Ears perking up a bit, Stormsong's tail gave a faint wag, as he relaxed slightly starting to like the bigger male. True he wasn't like his father but, he could live with that. Pro...tector? The word was a new one, a strange one but he liked the sound of it even if he wasn't quite sure he understood the meaning of it.

"Of course, since I know my name's kind of a mouthful to say all the time, not to mention it gets tiring quickly." She said nodding as her arms dropped behind her back in a more relaxed stance. The mention of Adrian Black made her shuddering and she gave a faint nod. "With all due respect...that man scares me sometimes." Sometimes, but not always.

Taking Iris' hand she returned the smile with one of her own. "I think so too."

Silversoul waved his own tail in affirmation. Protector. You know, someone who takes care of you, keeps nasty bullies like Nightwing or Feralblood away from you, and makes sure you don't fall in a bog and drown. His tone was playful and warm, while in the back of his mind he wondered how the pup didn't know a word like "protector." But then...he'd been in Iris' head so much from the start, he'd known half her vocabulary less than two days after her bonding. Or so he liked to claim.

Thoughtfully, and careful not to sound criticizing, he added, And perhaps I can help quicken your learning of human language and ways.

Iris frowned, slightly. She hadn't meant anything against the girl's name. "Cassadaine is a beautiful name, darling. You needn't be worried about that. Cassy is just more...familiar. Some Patrons were just so aloof around their Apprentices, and she wanted to be different.

"Adrian--that man scares everyone. All the time. You're a brave one." She shook Cassadaine's hand firmly. "Officially--welcome to New Eve, Cassadaine Stephens."

Now despite Iris penchant for adventure and death-defying escapades, she'd decided perhaps a tamer activity might do better for her new apprentice. Something that terrified her, in fact. "Well, Cassy, how would a game of checkers sound to you? Sort of while we get better acquainted." Nevermind that even chess...well, she only played chess for strategy practice. Board games were just that...Boring.

Stormsong's silver tail had picked up a steadier rhythm of wagging and he nodded happily trying to be brave and not cower at the mention of Nightwing and Feralblood, especially the latter. The alpha was very very scary which was why he had made a mental note to never do anything to get on the alpha's bad side.

Practically bouncing in place now he gave another nod. "I'd like that very much~!" Pausing for a moment tried to remember to words Cassadaine had taught him in regards to thanking others. Ears twitching as his tail slowed in its wagging for a moment, the limb soon resumed its motion as he remembered. "T-thank you."

Filing the slivers of information in the furthest reaches of her mind she gave a slight grin at Iris' comment about Adrian scaring everyone all the time. "I think, that's part of his plan. If you show that you're always afraid of him it'll just boost his ego." The thought sounded about right to her. "Thank you. Its a pleasure to be here really."

A game...of checkers...? The suggestion sounded a tad strange to her but it made her grin, a slow mischievous grin, that would have scared anyone in their right mind assuming they knew the true nature of the girl. "A game of checkers would be wonderful."

Silversoul nodded thoughtfully. Good. Then we shall be friends, I hope. The pup, while timid, seemed quite good-natured and fun-loving, one of the things he really loved about youngsters. And you are very welcome. To Iris he stated slyly, You know, right from the start I was sure we’d get along splendidly.

Iris huffed, ever so slightly, before returning her attention to her apprentice. Completely oblivious to the mischief in the girl’s eyes—really, she had no clue when it came to social cues, facial expressions, and body language—she gave her most reassuring smile. “If you like, I can go a little easy on you.” She meant it in the nicest of ways, but really it was something you might say to a child, not so much to a young woman who’d just bonded with a pup, however small, of Woodwhisp and Twilight of White Shadow.

She led the girl outside and towards her barrack, where a plate of cookies and a checkerboard waited, stopping often to make sure the others were following. This first experience had to be perfect, so Cassadaine wouldn’t have any negative memories of her early apprentice days. “Come along then.”

Rolling his eyes confidentially at Stormsong, Silversoul followed his bonded. You'll have to forgive her mothering, I suppose, he said with a smile. She thinks everyone else starts out as terrified as she did.
