I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO SHUT THE F#%$ UP! YOU'RE IN A F#%$ING LIBRARY!
PostPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2011 8:48 am

What a lovely way to spend the afternoon, sequestered at a small table in the back of the basically empty library, books spread all around himself, his trusty, musty companions!

"Hrmph!" Yeah, Godfrey didn't think so either, but once again he was holed up in the library with his transiguration homework and related texts spread out before him, miserably looking through tomes to try and figure out if there was a different technique of some sort that would make turning mammals into inatimate objects any easier. He thought, this time, that he should be able to actually do it. He'd conquered ravens into goblets, after all! But all his efforts in class today were fruitless as usual, thanks again to his wand. He squinted his eyes at it as he slumped down, resting his chin on the table.

Tell me your secrets, wand, and I'll polish you EXTRA hard tonight!

Godfrey giggled quietly to himself, looking around reflexively to whisper his thougt to Josh. Oh.....right. Godfrey sighed again, reaching to pull a book forward and stand the pages open in front of himself. A face pushed out from the page, dips and curves defined by the sentences, and Godfrey commenced to goof off boredly making faces at it rather than read it. Every time he made a face the book would copy, it was supposed to relieve stress to make the reading easier.

"Bleeeeehhhh" Godfrey wrinkled his nose and stuck out his tongue, waggling it obnoxiously, changing to giving himself a pig nose and crossing his eyes, all of which the book copied before settling back into a vague smile.

"Ugh....." Godfrey sighed for the third time, but unexpectedly yawned, the book copying, but the moment Godfrey's eyes closed it waggled out a long tongue and wriggled it in front of his face.

"Knock it off!" Godfrey hissed in admonishment, slamming the book shut to the displeasure of the face, whose tongue flailed about and smacked Godfrey good upside the head before returning into the pages, the book's magic settling.

"Ow, dumb book." Godfrey pushed it to the opposite corner of the table and rubbed the side of his head. Moments later his forehead made contact with the tabletop as he slumped forward. He sniffled slightly and tugged lightly and repeatedly at his right ear, trying to stop feeling so miserable. Stupid book, stupid transfiguration!

Danny picked his way through the towering shelves and scattered tables, listening to snatches of conversation filtering through walls of ageless books and the steady clatter of fingers at the computers. It had been a long day; a boatload of make-up homework to catch up from a bought of sparkling sneezes that had him coughing glitter for three days. He’d finished the lot and turned it in, but his hands and wrists were aching with all the writing and wand waving. Heh. Wand waving. Would that ever be not funny?

Considering he was a Hufflepuff, probably not.

His mother had sent him a large box of homemade fudge in his usual care package, Danny smuggling it past his roommates and wrapping several mouth-watering bars in plain red paper as a present of sorts for his classmate. Josh leaving had left the dorm a little quieter - lacking both ruckus laughter and midnight murmurs the pair had uttered when silencing spells came down and blankets were drawn up for snuggling.

Personally Danny thought he was a selfish douchebag, running off to play rock star while Frey moped, lonely and quiet without him, but as Frey recovered his smiles, Danny relaxed his angry opinion. Josh hadn’t been a douchebag, just determined to find out who he was.

And, hey, Godfrey was single now.

That eased the door Danny had assumed was shut and locked… open a little.

It was the unmistakable thump of Godfrey’s forehead against the table that roused Danny’s attention, his book bag slung over a shoulder and the delicately wrapped fudge in the other. He moved immediately towards the table in question, weaving around some chatting Ravenclaws, and was struck with a moment of panic - did Godfrey even LIKE fudge?

"Who needs to change raccoons into pillow cushions anyways? So stupid." Godfrey grumbled to himself, lips brushing the tabletop and his nose breathing in the pleasant wood odor. His ears twitched at the approach of footsteps and he looked up, mouth pulled down into a frown.

"Oh, hi Danny." Godfrey sat up straighter, his expression turning friendly neutral and attempted to neaten his things. He hated how he was moping over something or he other lately- though it was usually about homework. He was trying to be better for his other friends and appreciate them more. But his dorm mates especially didn't deserve to have him moping about all the time.

"Need something?" Godfrey inquired, sitting back in the chair and stretching with his fists planted in his lap. He felt something in his knee pop when he straightened out his legs for a stretch too. Mmm, much better!

A slow, almost shy smile quirked the corner of Danny’s mouth. “Well, actually, I figured I’d come over and…” say what a relief it was that he wasn’t pulling a Bella Swan over Josh? That didn’t sound right. “I’m glad you’re okay,” he tried instead, his smile faltering. “I - er - got you some fudge!”

The fifth year practically shoved the neatly wrapped package in Godfrey’s face.

Godfrey squinted his eyes somewhat and blinked, tilting his head a little before leaning forward to sniff at the fudge.

"Yeah well....I haven't jumped off of the astronomy tower yet. Transfiguration isn't THAT bad." Godfrey sat back with a smile and took the fudge, unknowingly echoing Danny's thoughts. "Thanks this is just what I needed! You want to have some with me?"

Better to take a break for a bit, maybe just stalk McGonagle after dinner so she would share her secrets. Godfrey cleared off the chair next to himself first, before carefully opening the wrapping and pulling out an inch thick piece of fudge. He sniffed it again before taking a bite out of the corner and rolling it along his tongue.

"Wow, hey! This is really good!" Godfrey exclaimed, staring down at the fudge before taking another bite. He smiled at Danny teasingly. "Not so sure I wanna share now!"

Danny moved into the chair cornered closest to Godfrey’s, the fishnet sleeve clutching skin-tight to his arm whispering against the wood as he propped his elbow on the table and turned to face his roommate. It had been awhile since Josh left - weeks had drifted with his bed empty and crisply made by the elves each night, one of the boys occasionally dumping books on the duvet to pick up something else and then hurrying to move them, looking hesitantly and apologetically at Godfrey. Like the boy had died. Though in truth Josh didn’t sleep in his own bed alone much; they had mostly slept together. And he hadn’t ******** died, he’d just left.

“Well the joke’s on you,” Danny declared, thumbing his nose at the other boy, “I’ve got loads more in my trunk. Enough to last me a whole year of your very un-Hufflepuff-y sharing habits.”

"Oh yeah? Well now that you've told me where your stash is, I know where to get more when I run out." Godfrey stuck out his tongue before eating the rest of the piece. He swung his feet absently back and forth, lifting his feet so they wouldn't touch the ground. He finished his snack by licking his fingers and absently wiped them on his pants, sticky chocolate fingers were gross!

“I thought it was part of the Hufflepuff Oath to not steal,” Danny said with a relaxed grin, sorting through his own book bag for his spiral planner and its all-important contents. Penciled across the pages were homework assignments, Cracked Iris concert dates, and the birthdays of classmates. “Hey, um,” Danny paused, glancing at the neatly ordered dates on the paper. “So, there’s a new wizarding movie coming out. It’s action, I think.”

"I had my fingers crossed when they had us say it. My sister is in Slytherin, you know." What would life have been like if he had been sorted into slytherin instead? Probably rather boring with Adela hanging about all the time. And some slytherins were rather creepy. Also, he wasn't a mole and didnt like sleeping underground!

"Oh yeah! I was planning to go to that, I think lots of others are going too and was going to ask them if they wanted to go together. Movies aren't fun by yourself."

Godfrey nodded, thinking about who all might want to go. Drake maybe, and Hugo.... "So you want to come with? I always sneak in cookies because I dont like most theatre food. Greasy popcorn, bleh!"

He shook his head and made a face. If he could sneak in fresh popcorn he would, but it tended to crunch and slip out of his hiding places.

“Sounds like fun,” Danny admitted though it completely defeated the purpose. It kind of figured, actually, that he’d summoned the balls to ask him out and Godfrey had misinterpreted it as an open socializing suggestion. He’d love to hang out with the whole crew, but… “Actually, I was kind of hoping we could go out sometime, you and me.”

"Huh?" It took a few seconds for Danny's words to get though his fuzzy skull, and when they did, a flush crept up his neck and cheeks.

Danny was asking him out? Godfrey really didn't know what to say. When he and Josh had gone out, they had already been kissing and messing about as 'just friends,' but he didn't know much about Danny. He knew logically Josh wouldn't be the only person he would ever kiss.

"Um....."Godfrey's mind raced as another few seconds went by. If he went out with Danny, would he just be trying to replace Josh? He still considered Josh his best friend, and hadn't been looking to replace that always empty spot next to himself.

But it wasnt like he really would be trying to replace Josh. Danny was a different boy- minus a few similarities like sharing a dorm. He probably didn't trip over himself like Josh, or suck at wand waving, or wear ripped pants because they were comfy and he couldnt afford to replace them, or have to stay over at his house because of his step-dad again, or make Godfrey's family laugh with some goofy thing he said.....

Would probably freak the first time Godfrey dug his fingernails into his back like claws and clung to him, all sharpness of body and teeth.

Oh ********, he didn't want to cry, the last thing someone would want when you asked them out was for the intended to burst into tears and run off. Godfrey did his best to shove down his here-and-there teenage emotions, his ears folding down against his head. Seconds had passed by before Godfrey opened his mouth again.

"Okay." He said, glancing down at his lap and fidgeting with his fingers. His curled pose wasn't resigned or uncomfortable, but nervous. He didn't feel as if it were fair to Danny to have to put up with him while he was being so weird. Danny was cute but he had always been too busy with Josh to really pay attention to others like that. He didn't know much about Danny at all, but wasn't that what dating was for? He had to try dating other people sometime, might as well go out with someone whom he thought was cute and who liked him. And you didnt have to LOVE someone to go out with them. He told himself that fiercely.

"Are you sure?" He blurted, conflicted. "Sure you want to go out with me? I mean... it'd be kind of weird.... I mean I'm kind of weird."

Oh Merlin, why couldn't he have just said yes and worried about it later? He was probably just going to scare Danny off now, after he'd gone to the trouble to give him a present and ask him out all proper like.

The pause between them lengthened after Godfrey’s initial acceptance of the idea, a line creasing between Danny’s brows as something a little too close to panic - sadness? doubt? - flitted briefly on Frey’s face. It felt like months and yet it felt like only days since Josh’s bed had fallen empty and cold among them, since his sloppy smiles and awkward comments had faded into memory just as his lanky shadow had faded from beside Godfrey’s.

Was it too soon to ask? Was it shitty of him, as a classmate and fellow Badger, to swoop in so soon? He hadn’t wanted to pester him with empty condolences before - after all, who was he to say he was sorry about Josh when he didn’t know the situation, didn’t really know them?

Kind of weird?

Danny blinked, bemused. “Well, everybody’s weird, I mean… I like the smell of gasoline.” Which was the stupidest thing to say ever, what the hell! “As long as you’re okay with it, I’m glad for the chance to get to know you better, Frey. I - y’know, I’ve always really liked you, so I figured…” the thought faded with the reappearance of his smile, which was shy and adorable, “We can take it slow. What about Hogsmeade on Friday, before we’re all allowed to go home? Something light. Like… er, icecream?
PostPosted: Tue Feb 01, 2011 6:34 pm

Godfrey fidgeted a little in his seat before smiling up at Danny, connecting eyes briefly before looking away, ears still flat to his hair.

"I can do slow, and ice cream." Slow was good, perfect really. Godfrey let out a breath of relief. Slow gave enough time to think about things. And to try not to think about others. He looked up at Danny again, trying not to fidget and wondering what to do next.

"Um.... since you're here....you wouldn't be able to help me with my transfig homework, would you?" He looked at his books and back to Danny, eyes widening with hopefulness.

Danny’s mouth slid into a calm, confident grin. “Mammals to something inanimate, right? Loads harder that reptiles or birds… mostly I’ve had trouble with the fur…”

Their conversation drifted into magical theory and application, Danny turning one of his pencils into a fat, fuzzy yellow mouse with a rather obnoxious pink nose and urging Godfrey to turn it back. The reverse was easier, as the mammal in question had originally been a pencil - but it was good practice nonetheless. Danny promised to locate a proper mouse for the next afternoon’s study period.

By the time the boys had begun to gather up their things and stow their books in their bags, the library had fallen into a reverent hush, most of their peers having already filtered out for more pleasurable activities or food. Danny slung his bag over his shoulder and paused.

“So, um. Would it be weird for me to walk you up to the dorm, since we both sleep there?” he asked hesitantly, moving around the tables towards the doors. The lamplight had gone soft and orange, casting long shadows across the mountainous shelves of books. “I’ve never really dated anyone before, to tell the truth.”
