The sun was setting, but Dance of Plenty ignored it. He was following a bird he had never seen before. He had always liked birds, they were so cheerful, but this one was beautiful. Even so, it was true that he could have been using his time better than following a bird, but to be quite honest with himself Dance of Plenty was out of sorts.
His brother had sent him a message of peace, and their long feud might be over. He didn't know how he felt about it. Nervousness to contact someone he had shunned for so long fueled his thoughtless wandering as he meandered deeper into a part of the swamp he had never visited before.
Reds and vibrant oranges ribboned the sky when the bird reached it's final destination. Anouther kimeti was in front of him. Dance blinked, he didn't expect to encounter anyone else today. He hoped he hadn't intruded on the green figure, but thought it best to at least announce his prescence if she hadn't noticed him already. "Hello." he called. "I appologize for disturbing you. That's just such a pretty bird."

Dawn was alone in her favourite part of the swamp, listening to the sounds of the swamp around her. Dusk wasn't really her favourite part of the day, she was too scared of the night and the dark hours that came after the sunset, but today the sky looked glorious. The sun set slowly, bathing the swamp in its last rays and making the branches and leaves glow with orange and red as if they were on fire.
When Willow landed in front of her she was quite startled and let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She was even more startled when another kimeti emerged from the foliage and greeted her. It was someone she'd never seen before, a tall buck with a coat of red and green. "Oh, hi," Dawn said with her usual casual manner. "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you arrive. In fact I didn't expect anyone to be here, usually this place is deserted. I come here to listen to bird songs because it's so quiet... or it was, at least," she added, then paused for a second. "Before I started rambling. I have this habit of talking non-stop. By the way, I'm Dawn-Over-Swamp but you can call me Dawn."
She gave the other kimeti a half-smile, hoping she hadn't confused him too much with her crazy speech. Her friends had often told her that she talked too much and too quickly, but she couldn't help herself.

My, as she turned around she was beautiful. Both herself and the bird were the same vibrant color, a shimmering green. "I'm Dance of Plenty. I suppose you can call me Dance, if you wish." It was quite forward of her to offer a nickname, but it was really much easier to say, and besides, who would care in a place like this? He strode further into the clearing, returning her half smile.
Birds frollicked from branch to branch around him as he entered. Dawn had certainly found a stunning place to sit and listen. He hoped he hadn't disturbed her too much, but he was loath to leave. Dance infinatly prefered company to any sort of solidaridy, and Dawn seemed quite sweet. "I'm sorry for stopping you from listening to the birds. I quite like their melodies, too, you know... Mind if I listen with you? Talk all you want- I happen to like a person who speaks their mind."

Dawn felt reassured by the other Kimeti's smile. At first she'd thought he looked awfully solemn, with all these elaborate marks on his coat. His expression however was friendly, and he probably wasn't as old as she'd thought either. When he stepped closer she realized that he was probably of an age with her. This reassured her, and she started chatting happily again.
"It's no problem," she said. "You're not disturbing me. I'd like to come here with my friends, but they are scared to come this far into the swamp. There are... crocodiles, and stranger things," she said, with a moment of hesitation. Dawn had herself met one of these strange things only a few moons ago, and she didn't want to repeat that experience.
For a moment there was silence again and the birds started singing again, as if Dawn was an usual presence in that clearing. Their songs filled the evening air, and Dawn shook her head to forget the bad memories. "I like company," she told Dance, truthfully. "Of both birds and kimetis."

Dance shivered slightly. He never wanted to run into a crocodile... or anything else that might lurk deep in the swamp for that matter. He was not a fighter, and was very conscious of the fact. "You must be very brave to come here on your own." he said with new respect, and sat silent for a while, thinking, as the birds chirped and sang to herald the setting sun.
"If your friends won't come to this place... I'd be happy to be your friend here." he offered, and smiled shyly at her. He hoped she didn't turn him down, she was unlike most of the Kimeti he had met and he wasn't sure how to talk to her. Usually he didn't put much thought behind his words, but now... he found himself conscious of everything he said. As she stared at him with her deep green eyes he tried not to babble. What was wrong with him?

"I'm not that brave, actually," Dawn said. It wasn't false modesty, being along in the swamp made her feel very uncomfortable and sudden noises scared her, so she never went without her familiar. She told this to Dance, who listened quietly. She didn't tell him about her fear of the dark, though. It was a bit embarrassing for an adult kimeti to have such an irrational fear, and even though Dawn usually laughed it off she didn't want to hear Dance laugh about it.
He was a good listener, and never said that she was talking too much or too quickly. "I would be happy to be your friend, too," Dawn said returning his smile. "It's nice to have many friends, but it's even nicer to have a friend with whom I can share my secret place. Besides Willow, of course," she added, winking conspiratorially.

"Willow's gotta be a great friend. It's nice to have someone there for you when you're in trouble. Besides, I'm sure she'll protect you from any mean caterpillers that come your way!" he said and grinned back.
But she walked this far through the swamp even when she was afraid? That sounded like bravery to him! He had made it, but only without thinking of where he was going! Wanting to make her feel better he replied "There's nothing wrong with being afraid of things. There are certainly things worth being afraid of. I still think you're brave." He nodded and started on a story of when he and his brother were young, when they would both try to spook the other with pranks untill they were both so afraid they hid under a bush together. They were there all day untill their mother scolded them and dragged them out by their tails.

"Willow is the terror of all caterpillars," Dawn laughed. "But seriously, I don't know what I'd do with him. We've been together ever since I was a foal. See, I don't have any siblings and... I don't remember much of my parents, they weren't around while I was growing up. I think they live on another part of the swamp." Dawn grew a bit sad at the thought. It wasn't unusual behavior for kimetis, but Dawn would have liked to have a brother or sister. "It must be nice to have someone you're so close to!" she told Dance. "It sounds as if you are really fond of your brother."

He winced. "Me and my brother used to be close. That was when we were much younger. We wandered around, and found our mother for a couple days, but not for long. It was fun while it lasted, me and him together, but... we're not close anymore. Not after... Well, we were very different, but I suppose it was nice to have someone there for me. If I hadn't had a brother I don't know what I would have done. We helped each other out. We haven't seen each other in years, but it's still a very different feeling to not have anyone that close anymore." Dance said sincerly.

Dawn felt embarrassed by Dance's words. She hadn't meant to bring up something that would sadden the other kimeti. "I'm sorry," she said. "I spoke without thinking. But if your brother is like you, I'm sure he wants to reconcile with you too... Ah, but it's not my own business... Sorry, I'll stop talking about things that don't concern me," she added quickly. She cursed herself for being so tactless. They had been getting along so well before her silly remark about his brother, but after all they were almost strangers to each other and she shouldn't have expected Dance to confide all of his secrets to her, especially something as important as this. She racked her brain for a lighter topic of conversation, and for the first time in her life she realized that she didn't know what to say.

((Sorry for the delay... been busy sweatdrop ))
"It's not you're fault, you couldn't have known." Dance nodded, and knew it was true. Dance didn't like even talking about his brother, but it felt good to share his troubles rather than try to ignore them. And Dawn was the best audience he had had. "My brother did send me a message saying that same thing... that he wants to be friends again. But... I don't know. I don't know if I can go to talk to him on my own."

((Don't worry, I'm rather late too ^^;; ))
Dawn chewed on her lip thoughtfully for a while before answering. She usually said everything that passed through her head, but after the awkward moment earlier she didn't want to upset Dance any more. She could feel that this was something important for him, not just from his words but from the look he had in his eyes, and the way he seemed to brighten up at the mention of his childhood days. "I would offer to meet your brother with you," she said eventually. "But I think this is something you have to do on your own. Go and meet your brother. Tell me the same things you've told me today. I'm sure he'll understand. If he was still angry with you, he wouldn't have sent any message at all, no?" she added with an encouraging smile. Then she laughed. "I'm sorry, I'm really not good at this giving-serious-advice business," she said, shaking her head. "You must think me quite silly... But I really meant it about meeting your brother. It would be nice for you to make up and forget about all the sad things in the past. Maybe next time you and me and your brother could all come and listen to the bird songs together. With Willow, of course," she added.

He had always known he had to talk to his brother on his own, but hearing someone say it out loud was different. Therewas no longer any reason he shouldn't. He thought he might be able to do it now, now that it was so directly addressed. Now that his fears were named he felt braver.
"You're not silly at all, I'm the silly one. I should go see him. On my own, and see if we can be once again brothers." Dance stood up with new energy, sure of himself before suddenly pausing. "But... I think I should be equally sure to come back to you..." he trailed off, and suddenly looked sly. "And maybe not always with my brother."
"Walk you back home?"

Dawn grinned at Dance. "I'd love to," she replied to his offer. She wouldn't have liked to go back through the forest alone. While they had been busy talking the sun had set, and now the air was cool and full of the cries of the night animals. Despite everything, Dawn thought she'd been lucky to spend all that time in the swamp talking with Dance. "Let's go, it's getting late," she said with a shrug. She would have stayed longer, but it probably wasn't wise. They could go back there again later, any time they wanted to.
