U'thulroo sighed and pushed some pebbles around in front of her. She was too restless to sleep, it was not quite time for silflay and it was too cold outside to leave the warren without a good reason. There was always digging, but the earth was harder during the winter season and she didn't feel the urge to dig right now.

So she pushed her pebbles back and forth, keeping an eye on the activity around her to see if anything interesting would happen. Some fighting among the males or perhaps a storyteller would tell a story? Anything!

His nose twitched before he’d finally had enough, leaving the mouth of the tunnel to deeper, warmer burrows. Frith’s light was still too far away to offer warmth, and he wondered briefly what the storytellers would say about that. But sometimes the smell of rabbits was too strong, or the burrow just a little too comfortable and he needed the air. For a moment he remembered fantasies from his youth of being a hlessi and quickly shook them aside. Chances were fair that one of them was dying out in the cold right now as he hopped along. Living in a warren was a blessing, despite the downfalls at times.

Ears perked at the familiar sounds of scratching; a female burrowing, most likely. Probably to make room for the litter she was hoping for come the warmer months. At least the warren was prospering again. For awhile there things had seemed bleak.

But then came a muffled sound he wasn’t sure of, and he paused in stride to hear it better. Standing on his hind as tall as the tunnel would let him, his ears swiveled until he pinpointed where it was coming from. It was nothing really, a staccato click that barely carried its way to him. Moving a few bounds closer, he waited for it to sound again. Silence. Now curiosity was driving him, for it certainly didn’t sound dangerous and at least was something new. There! There it was. It sounded like when two stones strike as you dug into the earth and threw them on top of each other, but much softer. And the sounds of burrowing were dimmed, whereas this was now growing louder.

A few more trials of following the noise and waiting for it to sound brought him to a branch off the tunnel, he peered in to see that the source of it were merely pebbles. Perhaps the doe was playing bobstones? But there was no one else with her. He approached the darker female, sitting near her and keeping his gaze up on her, so as not to cheat.

“Hm. Are they all dark?”

He smirked softly, not having played bobstones since he was an outskirter.

The sound of paws against dirt, pebbles clicking and the soft noise of rabbits moving around blended together into a soothing background noise that was relaxing and comforting at once. They were never alone in the warren so there was always security in numbers. She sniffed, breathing in the familiar scent of rabbits. No one smelled angry or upset so she had no high hopes of an entertaining brawl. U'thulroo was deep in thought despite her restless shuffling and didn't notice Sage approaching at first.

“Hm. Are they all dark?”

Her ears twitched, but that was the only indication that the buck had startled her somewhat. Dark? Oh, bobstones! She looked down at her paw, feeling the pebbles under it, and realised that she had no idea what they looked like. This could become interesting.

"Oh, I don't know," she said, grinning at the spotty male, "Lets find out!"

She slowly removed her paw revealing two black ones and one medium grey.

"Close enough, huh?" she said playfully, "Beginners luck perhaps?"

His ears lifting as she spoke, Sage nodded before she lifted her paw. He couldn’t recall her name, but perhaps had seen her wandering about the warren before, maybe at silflay or some other social gathering. A thought occurred to him that even with all the other rabbits in the warren, it was surprising how isolated and alone one could feel. It was good to share some time in the company of another and actually speak for that matter.

His dark eyes searched underneath and spotted the three stones she had hidden. Well, that was rather close, wasn’t it?

“Suppose so, it’s been quite a long time and they truthfully could be anything. I’m Sage by the way, forgive me if we’ve talked before and I’ve forgotten your name.”

Sitting up on his hind legs for a moment as he introduced himself, he promptly sat again, nose sniffing out her scent as he noted her bothered ear. Must’ve been painful at the time, he mused, wondering how she came by the injury. It wasn't so uncommon that it seemed odd, but rather it piqued his curiosity.

She smiled up at him, and decided she liked this buck. She was usually a sore loser (and unfortunately an even worse winner), but she was feeling charitable today. He had relieved her of her boredom after all.

"Sage," she said, committing the name to memory, "I'm called U'tuhlroo, and no... I don't think we have been properly introduced before."

U'tuhlroo's nose twitched as she inhaled and memorized the buck's scent in addition to his name. There were always individual differences, even if all the warren members naturally had the familiar scent of Watership Down. It was useful to know the other's in the warren by scent and U'thulroo took pride in never needing to be introduced to someone twice.

"You've been outside," she stated, catching a hint of grass and wet dirt. "How's the weather?"

"Its downright dreary if you ask me," came a doe's voice as she appeared in the tunnel. "Why, I even overheard Brackenrah bellowing over it this morning." The mostly black doe sat up and brought a paw to her mouth as she cleared her throat. Then in a deepened voice intended to mimic their warren's chief she went on, "By Frith and Inle, the weather is deplorable! A rabbit could go mad for not seeing the light this long, and there's worse to come! I can feel it in my bones."

Nightshade smirked in amusement at herself, turning white tipped ears towards the pair before coughing lightly. "Oh... do pardon me for eavesdropping," she then added as an after thought.

He’d been about to respond when another doe did it for him. She was right too; it was still dark and cold, even if it should’ve been Ni-Frith about now. He straightened up a bit, ears twitching as he listened to the newcomer’s impression with mirth.

“Not the Chief’s bones! We best prepare for the worst then.”

He replied with a smirk. Sage was rather fond of the Chief, and found some of his moments endearing at times. But, he still did a quick sweep to see if perhaps any from Owsla had heard his remark. Not seeing any, he inclined his head towards the two does once more.

“No, I don’t believe we have until just now, U'tuhlroo. A shame, though. I’m sure you would’ve gotten the better of me a bobstones time and time again had we met younger. I was rather poor at it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this turn was just a patch of luck.”

He then shook his head as the new doe excused herself.

“It’s no trouble, I’m sure others have heard us here. We’re not exactly in a private tunnel. Though, you’re right about the weather. I do hope it let’s up soon, many are growing too restless, and it might even make some go tharn if they feel too trapped.”

A brief snort of laughter erupted from the lighter female, and she once again sat back on her hind legs. It seemed like this black female had a talent for impressions.

"Good one," she said with a grin, "Can you do any others?"

She couldn't say she was very familiar with Brackenrah, not more than any other rabbit in the warren, but she had naturally heard the Chief speak and also exchanged a few words with him once or twice so she knew it was a good parody of his voice. The thought that she might get in trouble if someone overheard them laughing didn't even cross her mind.

"I did have a knack for bobstones as an outskirter," U'tuhlroo said without any trace of modesty, "but I'm afraid I might be a bit out of practice."

Calling it 'out of practice' was perhaps a bit of a stretch, but she hadn't played in... oh... several days at least. U'tuhlroo liked to round up a few youngsters from time to time and introduce them to the finer points of the game (preferably beating them soundly in the process).

Nightshade couldn't help a laugh of her own at Sage's dramatic response. She too thought nothing of the fact that they might get in trouble with some of the more stuffy members of the Owsla. One in particular, especially.

With ears twitching in amusement she looked to the other doe and nodded with her own lop-sided grin. "Certainly! Who would you like? Our beloved Captain perhaps?"

Again Nightshade coughed lightly before going into her next impression with a stern voice. "You there! That's my spot. Silflay somewhere else! And you, stop prattling like an idiot! I'll show you who 'sat on a thistle'!" Granted it was a bit overdone, but Nightshade's jest was made clear with the smirk on her face.

The black doe then perked up. "Bobstones? Oh I do love that game! Are you two playing?"

Snickering as Nightshade impersonated the formidable Cocklebur, Sage's attention was quickly focused back on bobstones.

"I suppose. Though I think U'thulroo was trying to play a game by herself before I happened along."

He smiled playfully, knowing full well she'd simply been bored and was pushing pebbles around.

"We can start a round I think. There should be enough in the burrows for us to hold a few games. Though I'll wager the next clover patch I find that you two will beat me soundly."

He chuckled with mirth before stretching his legs a bit. Being in the warren for too long tended to make one feel a little cramped.

The second impression was met with another bout of snorting laughter from U'tuhlroo. She thumped her foot in delight, obviously enjoying Nightshade's sense of humour.

"That does sound like something he would say," she giggled, "Sat on a thistle... That's great!"

At the prospect of a bobstone game she quickly sobered up and started gathering the pebbles she had scattered around. There were quite a few so they should be able to play a few rounds at least. Now how to start... She shuffled the pebbles around, trying to make sure that the other two couldn't peek at the ones she chose.

"Sure, we can play," she said, finally making her decision, "And I'll hold you to that wager Sage..."

On an impulse she hid pebbles under both front paws.

"There," she said with a satisfied grin, "One for you Sage and one for you... err... this is embarrassing. I'm pretty sure I've met you before but I can't remember your name."

((Tried to come up with a fair way of doing this. Let your bunny pick a paw and then throw the dice. If you get the same number as me I'll take that as a correct guess and answer accordingly in my next post. I hope this works!))
