Mioyo watched the sun set, ears alert.

Hopeful. At least, at first. She'd prayed he'd follow. That was a while ago now... Wasn't it? Vaskezu was grown... and his birth was when she last saw him. Her heart. Her love, and her reason for being.

And now.... She wasn't so sure.

He never came, and Mioyo felt something she hadn't felt since losing her first sons. Her family. Everything.

He isn't going to come. Logic whispered. Mioyo shivered, horribly. It was true. He wasn't coming back.

The commander looked into the pool of water at her reflection, staring at the red, black, and white looking back. Some said red was a curse. And maybe they were right. Maybe she was cursed to be alone... And for her own stupid pride.

Yes... Mioyo had been proud once. Green eyes closed, remembering the past. How proud she'd been of her size, her strength. Maybe too proud; she'd fought one battle too many. But, if she hadn't been a little vagabond, she wouldn't have met him.

All the same....

Mioyo opened her eyes, staring at herself in the water.

And she hated what she saw. No longer did she see a proud, majestic lioness. No longer did she see a princess. She saw what she was-- A tired, aging lioness, cold, and alone in the world, no better than a breeding stud for any male that would have her.

She bared fangs at the lioness in the water, and a paw swiped out, clawing the water viciously. She attacked the reflection several moments, before standing, elbows deep, in the water.

Firekin.

The pride name had haunted her since the fall of her father's pride. And yet... She'd only met one. And even further still..... She'd never been in that desert. She was not of the Blood.

She was nothing, now. She had to accept it. A sudden, pained yeowl came from the lioness' maw, pained and unhappy as she began to mourn, as one would mourn the dead. He'd gone back to them. He was gone. She was alone.

Unworthy, and alone. Even with her children, her new pride... She was heart broken, and alone. Thankfully, she was on the edge of the land; and no one would hear her cries. Another loud yeowl came from the lioness' maw, loud, long, mournful. Pained; and how she was in pain. Her love was gone. Her friend was gone. None but her children needed her. The pride... That was the only thing keeping her going.

And she didn't have the damn courage to tell them she had no mate. What would they do? They wouldn't respect her.... That was what. They'd leave.

She was worthless. Mioyo slammed a paw down, and slipped in the mud at the bottom. She didn't even bother yelling, letting the cool water wash over her. If it ended now... It ended now.

It wasn't long before a mouth fished the lioness from the water, turning her and helping her breathe. Mioyo opened one eye, and for a moment, almost swore she was looking at him.

But no, it was only Shotonin. The large male looked down at his commander, worriedly.

"Ma'am.... I heard noises... Are you alright?"

Shotonin was kind. He had much of his's looks, but a gentler heart, for all his shouting and bravado. Mioyo was grateful he was with them, and the lioness sat up, sighing. Now... No, now was not her time.

"I'm fine, Shotonin. Just a slip. Thank you." She smiled, bowing before turning, returning to the pride. Returning home.

Shotonin watched the lioness go, and blinked.

"Er.... Yes ma'am."

He didn't understand, merely obeyed. This time. Turning on his paws, he padded after, blinking. Whatever secrets his leader had, they were hers, and hers alone.

He was just part of them. That thought lingering, he moved home himself.
