Prologue:
Cosmic Era: 70,
Tensions between the PLANTs (A large group of space colonies designed for Coordinators (genetically enhanced humans) to live separately from Earth) and their sponsor nations increases exponentially, as the PLANTs grew to more resistant to the oppressive demands of the sponsor nations on Earth. Due to strong influence on the Earth Alliance military by the anti-Coordinator terrorist group known as Blue Cosmos, launch an attack on the plants. The attackers fired nuclear weapons on the agricultural PLANT of Junius-7. The destruction of Junius-7 escalated immediately into a declaration of war from the PLANTs via their joint military organization known as ZAFT. Furious from the destruction of Junius-7 attacking ZAFT forces drilled devices known as neutron jammers into Earth's crust, making nuclear fusion and fission impossible, and the loss of Nuclear energy immediately sparked an energy crisis on earth.
The Earth was anticipated to make a massive sweep of ZAFTs forces with it superior numbers, but ZAFT introduced its revolutionary new mobile suit weapons, which were by far superior to the Earth Alliances conventional weapons and Mobile Armors, and the war began to grind to a dead heat, with superior numbers clashing with the superior technology and skill of ZAFTs Coordinator dominated forces. Finally driven to the edge of desperation, the Earth made a secret contract with ORB's Moergenrote Corporation to help create its own experimental mobile suits. During this process, ORB secretly had its researchers attempt to steal Earth's experimental technologies.
As the Earth was finishing it prototype mobile suits, ZAFT caught wind of the operation and deployed the elite Le Creuset Team to capture or destroy the prototypes known as Gundams (an acronym for their operating system) and attacked the ORB space colony of Heliopolis, where the suits were being developed. Young coordinator Kira Yamato who was a student of engineering at a Heliopolis university, came across one of these mobile suits, known as the Strike Gundam and managed to keep it from the ZAFT forces, who managed to take the other four prototypes, Duel, Buster, Blitz, and the Aegis. In the battles that ensued at the colony, Heliopolis was eventually destroyed by ZAFT forces, using heavy siege weapons on the lightly defended colony.
Reluctantly agreeing to stay on to pilot the Strike, Kira Yamato became a crew member aboard the new model Assault Ship known as the Archangel. The ship fought its way through space to get back to earth, and upon arriving with the Eight Orbital Fleet at Earth. The battle ensued with the ZAFT forces pursuing the Archangel, let to the destruction of the Eight Fleet, but the Archangel managed to escape, but due to a change in calculations landed in the North African desert, and not in its intended destination of Earth Alliance Head Quarters at JOSH-A Alaska.
The Archangel soon encountered the legendary ZAFT commander Andrew Waltfeld, and temporarily teamed up with the resistance group known as the Desert Dawn. After several battles with ZAFTs North African forces, Walfeld was defeated and his mobile suit was destroyed and the Archangel continued onto the Red Sea and the Pacific Ocean. However, throughout its passage, the Archangel faced constant attack from ZAFT forces throughout its passage, and during an attack by the Aegis, Buster, Blitz and Duel Gundams, was forced to move into ORB territory, where ORB secretly took the Archangel in, saying it had chased the ship off, though it was actually giving it a break and much needed repairs, but only so they could get at the Strike's combat data, and Kira Yamato's expertise to develop a support Operating system for ORB mobile suits.
Upon leaving ORB, the Archangel falls under attack by Athrun Zala in the Aegis as well as the Blitz, Buster and Duel Gundams. Athrun and Kira engage each other and the in the crossfire the Blitz, piloted by Athrun's friend Nicol Amalfi was destroyed. Enraged Athrun went after the Strike and destroyed a Skygrasper piloted by Kira's friend and rookie pilot, Tolle Koenig. Both enraged, the two friends fought a furious battle, resulting the destruction of both the Strike and the Aegis, the recovery of the Buster by the Earth Forces, as well as the disappearance of Kira Yamato and the Athrun Zala's temporary custody by ORB forces.
Cosmic Era: 71
The Archangel eventually made its way to Alaska, but at that point the Earth Alliance High Command had received all the necessary data to create its own mass produced mobile suits. As a means to end the war, ZAFT staged a massive assault on earth originally intended on Panama, but in an act of duplicity, recently elected Chief Chairman of the PLANT council changed the target to JOSH-A Alaska, to remove the leadership and force a surrender or a cease-fire.
Having planned for the Chairman's actions, the Earth Alliance High Command, having scent a large amount of forces to defend the Mass Driver at Porto Panama, used the lightly defended base at JOSH-A as a lure to draw a large majority of ZAFT's fighting strength. Still stationed at Alaska, The Archangel deployed to defend the base, not knowing about the plan. After discovering the plans, Earth Alliance commander Mu La Flaga returned to the Archangel to warm them about the destructive device known as a CYCLOPS system, and the Archangel's captain Murrue Ramius decided to abdicate the Archangel's post and leave the battlefield. As the Archangel was about to be destroyed by an attacking GINN, the mysterious Freedom Gundam intervened supposedly piloted by Kira Yamato, blazed a path for the Archangel to escape. Despite the best intentions of Kira and the Archangel, the Cyclops activated and destroyed the Alaska base and most of its defenders, as well as more than half of the attacking ZAFT forces, striking a critical to blow to the PLANT's offensive.
Screaming for blood, ZAFT gathers its remaining forces to strike out at Porto Panama, and derail the momentum gained by the Earth Forces. It is now time for new young players to take the stage and make their marks in shaping the war torn world....
