Mitternacht gazed across the small distance between the two of them, his red scales catching the firelight and making his already red form glow with the added tint. For hours and hours now they had been together in her cave, lounging in front of her fire, talking about anything and everything the came to their minds. She had slowly begun to wonder how long her new guest would stay; she enjoyed his company so much more then she had expected to, and she did not know what she would do once she was alone again... The thought was nearly painful.

She also realized that she would be perfectly happy with this male remaining here with her, even though she knew deep down that he would have to leave, returning to his normal life. She had never encountered a male who captivated her in such a manner, let alone in such a short span of time. She turned her attention outward now, away from her thoughts and noticed he was gazing at the fire, seeming to be in his own thoughts as well. "It's a shame the night is only so long... I would very much like to spend hours with you, days even... How long did you say your traveling was supposed to last? I would enjoy it if you were here at least a few days."

Akemi kept his gaze on the fire that danced between him and Mitternacht. The night had been a pleasant one, and Akemi was having second thoughts on leaving. With every second that passed, the night was coming closer to a end. With their conversations, his exhaustion from the long travel had eased away. The excitement of the topics they spoke of, their favorite hobbies, other unique Painters that they had met, anything. The moment of silence that had fallen over them now was the first since they had settled down in her home.
Akemi bit his lip and risked a glance at the lovely female that he had learned so much of in the past few hours. She was staring at the space beside him, lost in her thoughts. A small smile lifted his lips, almost sadly. He didn't want to leave this place. Not yet.
His eyes glanced back at the fire. Xai was probably waiting for him at home, fretting about when he would arrive back.
His ear twitched when she suddenly spoke, throwing him out of his mindset.
'How long am I going to stay?' he thought silently, his brow lowering. He wanted to stay for much longer. Days would be nice, even a day would be passable. Even after he left, it wasn't as though he couldn't ever come back? Akemi opened his mouth to reply but the words caught in his throat when he pictured Xai in his mind's eye.
Akemi blinked her picture away, shaking his head slightly and then tried again. "I can stay for another day, at most. I'm sorry that it has to be so short, but I'm expected in other places."
A genuine smile flitted onto his face, "So, what now?"

Mitternacht dipped her head, taking the news in her stride even though her heart was beginning to ache; at least she had one more day with the fine fellow next to her. "I understand that you need to leave, it is selfish of me to expect a guest to remain away from home for so long. Please, accept my apologies." She glanced at her feet, twisting the rug under her. She couldn't understand what was going on inside of her, it was as if she was stricken by some foreign illness, making her heart and body ache at the thought of loosing this male. Never in her years had she felt any feelings of this sort for another, and she had met so very many...

Slowly, steadily it dawned on her what was happening... It was so impossible, so improbable, that she barely believed it as it unfurled before her very eyes. As much as she couldn't believe it she could not deny that she had rather quickly fallen deeply in love with Akemi. She toyed for but a second with the desire to curse whatever gods were in charge of matters with the heart, but her own ever growing affection crushed the idea. Sighing, she leaned in closer to Akemi, gazing up at him with her slightly saddened eyes, trying to force all her feelings down in her throat, to try and keep them from him. "If you would like, I can prepare you something to eat if you would like, it has been a rather long while since we settled in." She stood when she was finished, walking over to her pantry even before she had a chance to hear his answer; her whole form flooded with the urge to tell him everything, to seek out his comfort.

Akemi felt bad for having to leave so soon. She looked heartbroken and it concerned him. When was the last time that she had company before he came along? He had guessed that her life was a calm, lonely one even though she had so much life and energy in the ways that she spoke and acted around him. It amazed him that she could be so lively after living alone for so long. He wasn't really good at cheering emotionally hurt females up, his only experience trying was with Xai and she would only yell in his face then storm off someplace till her mood simmered down.
"It's fine. It has been a pleasure staying here. You're apologies are not needed. You've accepted me into your home, and given me a place to stay, I'm thankful." Akemi offered her a rather flattering smile, hoping that it would lift her spirits.
It confused him when it seemed to send her deeper into her own thoughts. He leaned back into her when she moved closer to him, looking back into her eyes. She spoke, and he smiled at her offer of food. He hadn't had anything to eat all night and a small meal sounded rather appealing at this moment. Though she left his side before he could answer. He watched as she walked over to the pantry before replying. "That would be very nice. Thank you."
He got up from his place on the cushion and moved to her side. He leaned in close and looked over her shoulder into the pantry. "Do you have anything in mind?"

Mitternacht tried to ignore the pleasant feeling of having him right next to her as she gazed through her pantry. "I'm afraid I don't have a wide variety of things to offer since I'm usually here all alone, but I can offer you a few simple choices. I can cook you something, or I can prepare some fruit for you..." She kept her eyes on the objects on her shelves instead of looking at him like she desired to with all her being. It wasn't fair that fate would treat her this way, finally allowing her heart to open up to another and then directing him down a different path. She started to form a plan, if not for his stay, at least to persuade him to return to her... Eventually...

She gazed at him cautiously out of the corner of her eye, watching him. Again, as if stricken, she felt the gravity of all the new emotions rush back in like a flood... She knew... She knew she needed to be able to see him again, she could not bear being left alone after this. At least not for long. She spoke slowly, trying desperately to control the words and their tone as she spoke them. "Akemi... What is it that you would like? You may have anything you desire."

'Fruit would be rather satisfying,' Akemi thought, not minding that she didn't have much of anything else. At least she knew how to cook. Akemi had never been gifted at such a thing, and had lived mostly off of fruit and other edible plants on his days of traveling.
And, fruit wasn't hard to come by. He didn't want her to spend her time cooking for him, especially when they could be doing something else more productive. He was about to answer her, when she spoke on.

Akemi held his breath at Mitternacht's last words. The thought of fruit fled his mind and the hunger in his stomach was replaced by a feeling of fluttering butterflies. Was she coming onto him? Akemi gulped down the lump that had seemingly formed in his throat.
Surely, she couldn't be. How would she take such interest in him in such a short amount of time? Yet, even with his doubts, Akemi took a step nearer to Mitternacht and gripped one of her wrists in her hand. He leaned in so his lips were almost touching her ear and whispered, "You choose."
All thoughts of Xai had fled his mind. Akemi decided that if something was going to happen here, with Mitternacht, then so be it.

Mitternacht remained still, her heart twisting in it's war with her mind. Surely, this male, this glorious male beside her knew her own inner struggle by now... Surely, this closeness, these words... He had to know. She arched her neck around to meet his gaze, her own emotions finding their way into her eyes, her desperation, her loneliness, her new painful love all pouring from her unheeded as she looked into his eyes for but a moment. Her voice was low, filled with her heavy emotions as she worked her words around them. "Akemi... Please... I do not wish to dishonor you, or your house... But my heart makes requests of me out of it's loneliness and out of my realizations this eve... I ask you with my selfishness, please, Akemi, would you do me the honor of resting by my side tonight? It is with my heart aching I ask this one boon of you... It is open for you to accept or refuse my offer..." Her whole body tingled with the thoughts of what either answer would bring her as she awaited the next words from his lips.

She thought that he could refuse her? How could he?
She had show him a great time. He hadn't felt this sort of connection with anyone before Mitternatch. She made him feel free, and careless. It felt like his was a teenager again, with nothing to hold him down. Nothing keeping him back.
Akemi let go of her wrist to slide his clawed hand down her side to rest on her hip. He licked his lips, his attention on her own. "If that is what you wish, Mitternacht." Her name came out as a soft whisper. He leaned into her, pressing himself close to her skin.

Mitternacht sighed, shifting her form closer to his own with a relish that she had never felt before. She knew her words would be useless at this point, so she didn't even bother to utter them, her body giving him all the answers that he would need. Her heart was soaring in her chest; the feeling that another being felt affection in their heart for her, the feeling of his warm skin with no boundaries. She coiled her tail around his, curling her neck against his own so she could reach his face for a simple lick of a kiss.

Her world was changing so very fast, she didn't care at all.... Even if she only experienced this for one night, this closeness, she would relish it for all her days. She could always carry the memory of it with her if she never saw him again, always able to look back and remember the one night of her expressions of Love. She was convinced, that while these wonderful memories would sustain, she would always miss him after he left. But she let her mind slip off into the bliss of the moment, tossing aside all her worries so she could fully enjoy being with him this very last time; her heart pounding with her love and affection.

:Morning After:

A long, gasping yawn escaped Akemi's throat as he stretched his muscles out across the surface he was laying on. He groaned, a smile forming on his face as he felt the fur underneath his skin, and the heated body that laid beside him. 'Xai.' Akemi thought, content at waking up in their bed together on a peaceful morning. He pulled his wife closer to him, wrapping one arm around her. Akemi ran the claws of his other hand along the furry blanket. When had they bought such a wonderful thing? He couldn't remember.
Wait. Wasn't Xai allergic to fur? Akemi's eyes fluttered open to find, not Xai, but a darker blue female slumbering silently beside him. Shock rushed up into the pit of his stomach. What was this? Last night came rushing back to him in a sudden jolt.
The feelings, the emotions, everything. "Mitternacht?" Akemi whispered, letting his hold of the female go. What had he done? 'Oh God.' Akemi thought, repulsed at himself for letting the mood get to him. He didn't think. She just looked so appealing, and was so nice and perfect. She was just what he needed at the time. 'You've got to face this. It's too late to go back. I'm sure that she'll understand,' A voice in Akemi's head spoke, giving him slight confidence to wake the female. "Mitternacht," Akemi said, leaning down to rest his hand on her shoulder.

Mitternacht slowly drifted up from her deep slumber in waves, the first containing a warm contentment, followed by the second wave as she barely recognized that there was a radiant heat source by her side. Rather quick to follow was the striking realization that she was next to her house guest, who was currently waking her up. Her neck had never risen so fast, nor had she ever fully awoken so quickly as the night flooded back in on her. She really had let her guard down that much then... She glanced over to Akemi, her eyes wide with shock. "Oh my... Akemi... Did I? ... Did we? ... Oh my, oh my oh my...." She glanced back and forth between his face and anything else in the room, trying to put together just what exactly would make her react so in her interest after barely getting to know him.

"Yeah," Akemi said quietly, afraid to set her off. He felt guilty for taking advantage of her. She looked so panicked right now that Akemi had to fight the will to flee. Instead, he took her hand in his own, letting his fingers caress her knuckles to calm her down. "I'm sorry. For last night. I don't know what came over me." Akemi looked down at their hands and frowned.
It wasn't the right thing, Akemi realized by her panic. It was a rush of the moment sort of thing. All feelings of fuzziness and love had left them both, leaving confusion and guilt in their places. What they had felt last night couldn't have been real. 'What now?' Akemi thought, chewing on his bottom lip.

Mitternacht looked down at her feet and shook her head slowly. "I am so very sorry Akemi... I don't know what came over me..." She paused for a long moment before continuing. "Do not get me wrong, I do have feelings for you... And while last night might not have been the best decision for the both of us, I do not regret it. I must take responsibility for my actions, and my loneness combined with what I feel in my heart for you was too overwhelming... Again, I apologize with all my heart... I do not wish to bring you any troubles Akemi..." Silently she pondered over all the realizations, the knowledge of just how deep her situation had become. They had done something irreversible, and while she did Love him, the fact that she might indeed have what she desired; a constant companion like him, was weighing heavy on her mind...

"It's not your fault," Akemi mumbled, looking down to the fur blanket that they both still lay upon. "We both-"Akemi paused, looking up into Mitternacht's face. She wasn't looking at him. It seemed like she was trying to look at anything but him. "We both made a... mistake last night. We took things too fast, in the heat of a moment." Akemi tried to explain it to himself. He wanted to find a solid reason for his actions. A excuse to tell his wife. Akemi couldn't find one.
"Mitternacht, look at me." Akemi said, reaching out to place two figures under the females chin. He tilted her head up so she had no place to look but into his eyes. "I don't want this to ruin our friendship. I'd still like to visit you, even if it isn't as often as I would like." Akemi smiled sadly, placing a light kiss on Mitternacht's cheek. "Friends?" He asked, hoping silently that she would accept him, even after what had already happened between them.

Mitternacht nodded slowly, meeting his gaze. "Friends indeed... My door will always be open to you should you decide to visit... Despite what happened so quickly, I still wish to see you... Though, we may not get that close again." She sighed heavily. "What we've done... Our mistake may lead to something unplanned... Should it occur, I would like to assure you that I will be a responsible female." She slowly rose, looking about her. "Well... The past is the past, let us continue on as friends. I will go prepare you some breakfast."
