It was a cool day, but not too cold, not so cold that all he wanted to do was huddle up close to his family. In fact, Helios was currently a little way away from his parents and brothers. He hadn’t gone too far, he reasoned, and he’d seen his father glance over so clearly he couldn’t be doing anything dangerous or the tall stallion would have called him back. No, he was certainly safe here but it was exiting to be even a little way off from his parents. It made him feel quite grown up, but it wasn’t as much fun as it might be; being alone was all very well but it was more fun to be alone with one or two of his brothers. It would still feel a bit adventurous, but he’d have someone to share it with.

Flicking his tail, the purple colt turned to look at his family once more and hoped one of his siblings would spot him and come to join him.

Sol glanced over at the small colt standing all by himself once more and smiled slightly. Helios was still close enough for him to feel safe, so he saw no reason to spoil the foal’s fun. Perhaps he was playing sentinels or something; that had been a game he himself had enjoyed as a colt, although admittedly he’d always played it with Vince in tow. Still smiling to himself, Sol turned to his mate and gesture to the purple colt with one wing.

“It seems as though our Helios is feeling adventurous today,” he murmured softly.

Chandara breathed and watch her breath crystallize in the air. It was rather chilly though not too cold for colts to play under the watchful eyes of their parents. Chandara smiled softly turning her gaze toward Helios whom was only a small distance away.

"So it seems." Chandara nuzzled the foal at her side. As long as Sol wasn't anxious about the distance Helios was out she had no reason to be either.

Saber cuddled against his mother’s side the other's where all out having fun, but he didn't want to leave the close quarters of his parents. What if something happened? His father was the bravest nequus in all of Urin, but Saber was timid. He watched his brother Helios out a little ways...

"Go play my son." A motherly smiled spread across Chandara's face; she nudged Saber gently. "Courage is something you have to find for yourself." she smiled again "You will find it and become one of the bravest nequus."The longing in his face couldn’t be hidden

The colt looked at his mother surprised, how did she know? Saber had been watching Helios wishing he was braver so he could play. Was that true? He looked at his mother feeling both relief and a small surge of confidents. Saber smiled up at his mother and stood ”You really think so Mother?" He asked

Chandara only smiled then answered “Yes, I know so.”

Saber smiled trotting toward Helios.

Helios grinned as his brother approached, greeting the other colt with a whicker. “Hey there Saber,” he called, trotting over to the other Ichsa, “do you want to see if we can find some berries on the bush over there?” He indicated the one he meant with a nod in its direction. It was further away from their parents still, but he’d seen his father sprint that distance in no time so they were still pretty safe. Well, unless something was hiding in the bush waiting for them of course. Helios shivered at the notion and tried to push it aside; that was silly! There was nobody hiding in there, why would there be?

As Saber set off to join his brother, Sol sighed softly and turned to Chandara once more with a soft smile. “It is good to see him step away from our sides, I hope he overcomes his fears soon.” He could understand them, he truly could. As a colt he himself had been utterly fearless but since he’d lost Vince, things had been... Well they’d been more difficult. He’d got so jumpy, ready to fight or run at the slightest provocation which had made protecting innocents rather difficult. As time had gone by he had improved of course, but he hadn’t managed to recapture that feeling of invulnerability he had enjoyed while in his friend’s company. Perhaps that was a good thing; it certainly made him more sensible.

“Chandara,” Sol went on after checking that the other four colts were occupied, “what do you think of leaving this place soon? We could take the children to D’ob for a time, then maybe to Quirne?” Quirne. That was where he’d first met her, on that quest to find Kati for Nyx. It felt like a lifetime ago, but in truth it could not have been so very long. Why was that, he wondered? Perhaps... perhaps because it was almost from another lifetime. He hadn’t changed, and nor had she but their situations had certainly changed. He could hardly recall now how his life had been, how he had traveled alone and kept no close friends. So strange to remember his life then compared to now.

"Hey Helios." The little colt nickered as he joined his brother. Saber looked in the direction of the bush, worries flooded back into his mind. What if there was something hiding behind the bush? What if There was a group of somethings? Or what if there was something in the trees above? Saber shuddered. He didn't want to go there...

"Ok... Lets go, Helios" he muttered meekly, one of his brothers would just make fun of him if he went back to mother and father. He kept trying to ignore the worries that continued to plague his mind. He started to move toward the bush warily.

Father was here right? He continued to try and console his fears. And if he faced them he'd become brave too Right? Slowly the little Ischa continued to approach the bush.

Chandara nodded and smiled softly in return "As do I, it will come in time." she said certain. She had no doubts the boy would grow to be like his father. Chandara watched her children play for a while then nuzzled her mate.

"Yes that is a wonderful idea Sol." she smiled Chandara had almost finished regaining her strength since the foals were born, she dearly wanted to show her children the beauty of the world especially Quirine the place where fate had brought Sol to her.

"Don't wander to far." Chandara called seeing the foals move a farther away.

Helios grinned at his brother’s agreement and set off slowly beside him; Saber didn’t really like being far from their parents, so there was no point trying to rush him faster than he wanted to go. As their mother called out, the purple colt turned to respond to her. “We won’t! We’re only going over to the bush there to see if there are any fruits!” he called. If there was some fruit there, everyone could come over and join them. It would put an end to his little adventure, but he didn’t really mind that if there was fruit to share. From here it looked as if it was pretty bare, probably stripped by members of his family, or people with a nearby tree already but with was worth a closer look just in case.

Sol peered over at the pair, and nodded when Helios called out to him. “Alright, no further than that though please!” Shaking his head at himself, the grey turned to his mate. “I know they are probably perfectly safe, but I cannot help wishing to keep them all close by.” It would be harder once they left Shrilal for new and exiting lands that the colts -well most of the colts - would be all too keen to explore. It would be harder and harder the older they all grew, too. One day he would have to let them all out of his sight to live their own lives. It was a long way in the future yet, but it was still a weight on his mind.

“I think... maybe a few more suns here?” Sol suggested, returning to their earlier topic of conversation. “After that we could remain in D’ob until spring; I have never venture to Qurine in the winter time, but I hear it is harsh there in the colder seasons.” Doubtless Chandara knew all about that, but he felt the need to voice his thought process all the same. In all relationships, he remembered his dam telling him when he’d been small, communication is key. Share always your thoughts to share always your lives, and he did so want to share Chandara’s life forever.

Saber gave a nod back to his mother, he wouldn't go any further than the bush it was far enough for him. Saber looked back to the bush seeing some berries he for got some of his worries and hurried a little faster, it seemed the inside of the bush was filled, and the outside stripped bare. "Look Helios." Saber said a little more excited to his brother.

Saber peaked into the bush startling a zrun out of hiding, he'd never seen one before and whinnied in surprise leaping back in a jumble of hooves.

"Whats that!"

The Zrun fled being startled suddenly.

Chandara gave a nod as she was acknowledged by her two boys. One day she would have to let them go there was no denying it. Chandara would always love her children no matter how far from her they went.

"Yes a few more suns." she blue mare agreed, Chandara listened and nodding every so often. She knew that yes, but allowed Sol to voice his concerns. It was important she both listen and voice her own concerns but Sol had already addressed them with his own.

"I've traveled during the cold season and it's truly unfit for them." she motioned with her wing to all her sons.

Suddenly alarmed at Sabers cry Chandara got to her feet quickly.

Helios yelped and pranced backwards as the odd creature appeared, heart in his mouth. A few moments later, he managed to actually process the situation and laughed nervously, shaking himself to dispel the tension that had thrummed through his muscles. “It looks as if we scared it,” he commented to his brother with an embarrassed grin, “are you okay?” It didn’t look as though the other colt was really hurt, but better to ask all the same. Besides, Saber had got a bigger shock than he had what with the thing crashing into him and everything.

Suddenly there was a thunder of hooves, and Helios turned just in time to see his father skid to a halt and cast around with his horn lowered. After a moment, the tall stallion sorted and lifted his head again, peering about himself suspiciously.

“It was that thing,” the purple colt said helpfully, gesturing towards the creature, “it jumped out of the bush and scared us. What is it riruy?”

Thought didn’t come into it. Saber’s squeal went into his ears, bypassed his brain and slammed his muscles into action. Only a moment later, he arrived beside the two colts ready to fight off whatever had attacked his son. When no threat presented itself, Sol snorted and looked around more carefully. As Helios spoke up, Sol spotted the zurn and relaxed; no danger, just a scare. That was alright then.

Smingly softly, he lowered his head to give each of his boys a reassuring nuzzle. “That’s a zrun,” he supplied, “they’re intelligent like we are, but they never grow any bigger than that. Many Nequus take them on as companions, protect them from harm in return for friendship... Neither of you re harmed?” The zrun might not have been a threat, but it was possible that Saber or Helios had damaged themselves.

Saber tumbled with his brother for a moment before breaking loose of Helios falling a few feet away. Saber shook himself trying to get his bearings. He glanced at his brother and tested his limbs. "I.. I don't think anything is broken." he said though Saber didn't think anything was broken he was sore from his tumble with Helios.

Saber turned his head to see his father quickly arrive ready too defend the pair of colts. Upon seeing that the colts were alright their farther answered Helios. The young colt getting to his hooves. "I.. I'm alright Father." He looked over to his mother wanting to return to her side knowing it was safe there...

Chandara relaxed when Sol did and laid herself down again, she smiled encouragingly as Saber looked back toward her. Hopefully he would grow out of this stage... He needed to be more independent that one.

Sol relaxed further, giving each colt another nuzzle. "Good, I'm glad." Should he stay here with them, he wondered? Saber was clearly still shaken but... Well, he couldn't let the colt hide behind himself and Chandara forever. He needed to learn independence, to manage his fears. It was hard, Sol knew that well enough, but sometimes in life you needed to do hard things. Like force yourself not to coddle a nervous child. Well, that settled it then.

"If you're both alright, I shall go back to your mother then," he said with a nod. "Don't hesitate to call me over if you need anything at all." He couldn't help that little concession. They were young yet; there was still plenty of time for them to find their hooves.

Helios gave himself another good shake and nodded to his sire's words. "Alright riruy, I will."

He wanted to continue with his adventure; a bit of a scare couldn't hold him back! Everybody got scared of things, but people like his father didn't let fear stop them, and he did want to be a stallion like his father when he grew up. If he was going to do that he had to practice now, right? Exactly right. It wasn't as if there was anywhere for anything else to be lurking in any case, and the scare had been good because it had taught him the name of another creature. Zrun.

Saber gladly accepted his father's nuzzle he felt safe again being close to his father. He had to be brave like father and all of his brothers… Saber gave a nod to his father as he went off with Helios. He did learn something though about one of the creatures of the world. But he could have done without the scare. He gave one last quick glance to his mother before looking back at Helios.

“W..what should we play now?” he asked his brother.

Chandara gave an encouraging nod back at saber as he went to play again, "They weren't hurt were they?" She asked Sol with motherly concern as he returned.

"No," Sol smiled and shook his head, "just startled, I think they're going back to play now." Poor Saber. He understood what it was like to be frightened of your own shadow when you saw it unexpectedly. Over time he had got better at controlling his fears but they were still there under the surface, probably always would be.

Not that he hadn't been glad their father had come over, but he was happy when the stallion left and allowed them to continue playing. "Maybe chase?" he suggested with a tilt of his head, "chase would be fun." He would be the fastest stallion ever when he grew up!... Well, probably not, but it was fun to dream all the same.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 24, 2009 3:11 pm

"Good." Chandara said calmly with a smile. Little Saber would be a good stallion when he grew. Tat much Chandara knew. she stretched her tendril wings "Come sit once more." she bade him.

Saber turned to Helios and nodded "yea." he said "I bet you will be." though he wasn't sure what he was goingto be when he grew.
