The twilit sky was free from everything but the few birds waking to great the dawn of a new day. Frost clung to the dead grass and earth and each and every breath that came from the white maned mare clouded around her muzzle. The biting winter air she took in was nothing when compared to the frigid water she stood in. For the last few hours she had been standing, up to her belly, in the icy lake water simply staring down at it's surface. Several creatures had passed her in that time but had only stood and stared for a moment or two in wonder before passing on. It should be said that ordinarily she would turn to glare at them but at the moment she was far too lost in her own thoughts to pay them any mind.
In the last year of her life so much had changed. Her mother fell for the stallion she called an enemy. Her search for her father ended in a fight for her life against a demon mare. Only a short while ago had she finally made her way home again just to find that nothing was really the same. Perhaps the biggest shock of all came in the form of her brother. The one she had left as a colt had grown into a magnificent stallion and that stallion had left his sister far behind.
Her teeth clenched thinking of her brother and slowly her head lifted to gaze at the lightening sky. It was a bit of a shock for her to realize just how much time had passed since she had first entered the water and it was only now that she began to realize how her legs were numb and how she ached. It seemed that perhaps it would be better to get out of the water now but the moment she took a step backwards it felt as though she had just been slapped hard by the barbed end of a kalona's tail.
Amoena swore loudly at the sensation and continued to curse herself quietly for being dumb enough to wade out in water in the middle of the cold season. At the time the numbing feeling she knew would come had seemed appealing, it was better then the anger and unhappiness that burned her on the inside. Now she was having serious second thoughts about her judgement on the mater.

((I fail, sorry this took...so long. xP))
It was still cold. Still utterly freezing, at least for the young stallion who never experienced the winter season before. But logically, his Father told him that when the ice begins to melt and the snow disappears, it begins to warm up. And it wasn't. The ice was melting, so water was easier to access, the snow was disappearing so it was easier to walk around it....but the air still sent a chill down the young stallion's spine.
But he couldn't complain....he wouldn't complain. It wasn't in his nature to do something so...morally wrong. It was just logically speaking, nature didn't make too much sense. And it was his Father's words of wisdom, Ian wouldn't say something like that unless it were true. Logically speaking it didn't have to be 80 degrees in the air right now, since it was still winter, but if things were starting to clear up, wouldn't it be at least just a little warmer?
Ah, well nothing too big worth worrying about, anyways. So many things in life mattered more than how cold the air felt against his coat. Family, for instance. The crazy side to it that came from his Father - the ones he usually spent time with, and his brother and sister alone. Everyone mattered, everyone was loved. The stallion alone gave attention to everyone he met, complimented them, showed affection for them....anything they wanted him to do, he'd do it. Like his half-cousin he lived to please. And it never really bothered him. But Emmett hadn't seen anyone in a long while, he escaped one night, and hadn't come home since - his brother and sister already gone. The stallion, who his parents named Emmett wanted to find something more for his life, and needed to go by himself, without the overlook of someone he loved.
It just seemed more fitting.
The soft trickle of water caught the young stallion's attention as he proceeded to walk down a silent path. There was water in the area, and suddenly he found himself rather thirsty. So Emmett began to walk in the direction of the noise, but what he found was more...way more intriguing than just water. He approached a mare, as blue and white as the shy and the winter combined. She seemed to fit in perfectly with her surroundings. Emmett came to her from behind, so the mare had her back turned from him and didn't notice. That's when he found himself staring...
....at a mare wadding in freezing ice water. Wait, what?! Oh! Oh my! Was she insane, was she hurt? Did she realize what she was doing? Almost immediately, Emmett ran to her side by the edge of the water. "Miss, are you alright? Are you frozen? Oh, miss what were you thinking, you could catch a cold you could get terribly sick! Here, let me help you!" Emmett stepped slowly into the water, feeling the rush of the ice at his dispense, but he didn't care....this mare needed his help whether she liked it or not. "Come on I will help you walk."

A voice broke through the early morning silence like the light of the sun cutting through the black of the night. The pale mare tensed slightly and quieted her own cursing. Slowly she turned her head to peer at the source of the voice through a curtain of white hair. Crystal blue eyes narrowed and eyebrows raised in a skeptic look. She was well aware that what she was doing was stupid, or at least she was now. There was no need to point it out to her.
She rolled her eyes and turned her head away fully intending to ignore until she heard the sloshing of water from behind her. She turned her head sharply to stare wide-eyed at the silly stallion. "I don't need your help." She snapped trying to figure out what was going through his mind. Did she look like she needed help?
No sooner had the thought passed through her mind did it occur to her that that was probably exactly how she looked. Only a complete moron walked out into icy water in the middle of winter. Of course that didn't really say much about her 'rescuers' intelligence.
"Just turn around and go back to shore! No need for two to freeze out here..." Sucking in a deep breath of air she turned around preparing to head out despite the sting of the air. If it were up to her she would take very slow steps out to give herself time to adjust. With another present she couldn't do that without seeming weak. So she pushed her way as quickly as she could through the water on shaking legs, gritting her teeth.
She hadn't made it halfway back when she lost her footing. She didn't have the time to curse out loud before she found herself submerged in the icy water. She regained her footing quickly and popped up like a prairie dog, sputtering. "Sh-s**t! C-c-cold!!!" Without waiting a second longer she started to scramble towards the lake's bank. The air was cold and the water was cold, it didn't really matter where she was it would be freezing. But if she could dry off it wouldn't be so bad.

It was wise never to judge another, for they would never judge you. Never expect something great, or something horrible, and nothing would ever go wrong. Always live to please everyone else, enjoying only the moments when a smile occurred. That's how Emmett lived his life. He was compassionate, gentle, loving....
Still, he tried to wrap his mind around the actions of the mare in front of him.
...There was something terribly the matter here, and he couldn't identify it. "I'm sorry if I'm intruding miss, but if I may be so inclined, yes....you do. You can barely move, miss." Emmett was never one to disobey another creatures orders, especially that of a female, but this mare needed help whether she knew it or liked it or not. And Emmett felt obligated to do so anyways, being as he was the only one he could see standing there, or anywhere near there for that matter. What would happen to her if he left? She'd get out, eventually, but her legs would be so immobilized, he'd be surprised if she could make it to safety someplace warm.
"I won't....f-f-freeze, miss. And if I d-do...at least I know it wasn't in....v-v-vain." The large stallion began to feel the effects of his decision to jump in after her, but yet he still did not regret it. Emmett was by no means a hero, or a knight in shining armor, but something about this situation screamed for his utmost attention.
The stallion hobbled through the icy water almost as if he was jumping through it, and with every large heap, water splashed onto his back making him cold even more. But she needed help. As he caught up to her, his almost-invisible eyes watched as she fell, and a sting shot through his entire body. Would she be able to get back up? Would he need to help her? Would they both go down?
Would....?
It wasn't worth questing the situation, Emmett just stood there until she popped back out into the air. "Alright miss, hold on!" He shouted, dunking his head under the ice to push her rump as hard as he could, giving her speed to get to shore. With all the weight his large body provided, the stallion proceeded to almost force her legs to move.
But still there lacked complete strength, as Emmett could feel his own legs getting stiffer by the passing seconds. But he wouldn't fail in providing this mare with an easy out. Even if he meant he'd be the one stuck.

Hold on? For a moment Amoena had no idea what he was up to. It made even less sense when purposefully submerged his head. Feeling him push against her it suddenly all made sense.
The idiot was still trying to help her.
Brilliant. He had completely ignored her and now they really both were going to freeze. She had gotten herself in to the mess she was in she could get herself out. She tried to fight him, locking her legs, trying to secure herself to the floor of the lake, anything she could think of. Though she wasn't quite sure she was right about being able to help herself in this situation. With a frustrated roll of her eyes she lessened her childish methods and opted for moving forward once again.
It was simply to damn cold to mess with him and her painfully numb limbs all at once. They approached the edge of the lake faster then she would have been capable of on her own, as much as she did not want to admit it. Every step was hellish though. The closer they got the more of her wet body was exposed to the air until she was standing on land.
The frigid chill of the air was too much to bare standing. Refusing to show any weakness to the stupid kid, however, she slowly lowered herself to the ground as though she were simply bored. "Y-y-you r-really are s-s-stupid you kn-know?" She said inclining her head slightly. She was horrified to hear the tremble in her own voice. It was worse when she realized that it wasn't just her voice that was shaking, it was her entire body.
Shivering was the bodies way of warming up. Unfortunately it was the most pathetic looking thing and Amoena was unwilling to give in to a natural reaction. So she fought against her own body with everything she had. Her muscles tensed, her eyes narrowed and she bared her teeth all trying to tell her body to stop. She was utterly defeated. "D-damn...c-cold..." She muttered giving up on her fight.

It was hard pushing the mare out of freezing cold water. It was hard because his own legs were locking up under him, but it was even harder as she tried to put up a fight. She was definitely stubborn, this one...but in a sense, so was he. At least when it came to saving this mare from a frozen death he was. Usually he'd oblige and walk away....but no.
Not today.
So he kept pushing as she tried to hold her ground. Emmett was by nature, stronger than her, but it was still a great challenge. As the water sunk from his back, he could feel the chill of the crisp air, which made it almost worse to continue the hard walk. But he had to, so with every ounce of strength he had, he pushed until she was up on land. A few seconds after her, the stallion jumped to the water's edge and found his hoofs touching dry land once again.
What a great feeling it was, until he realized just how cold he had gotten within the minutes he was in the water. Imagine how she was!?
"Um...no. I am...n-n-not s-st-stupid. I was...you...w-w-were f-f-frozen there, miss and I..." It was too cold to continue talking, so Emmett stopped for a minute to catch his breath. His eyes watched as her body did not shake violently, the way his did. Had she froze that bad to where she couldn't even move? Oh dear, oh dear that's not good....she needed to get someplace warm....and now.
"C-come on miss, I'll help you....w-walk. We n-n-need to f-f-find a fire, there's b-b-bound to be one c-close. Yell at me all you....w-want, I'm s-st-still going to-to-to try and h-h-help you. It's painfully cold, I can barely h-handle it myself...."
With the motion of his head, he pushed the mare's rump forward again as if to not ask, but force her to move. If she didn't want to, he'd make her...it didn't matter. She could hate him all she wanted, after she was all warm again.

Oh for the love of, she had not been frozen! "W-we do not n-n-need to f-find a-anyth-thing!" She snapped, or at least tried to. Stammering like an idiot from the slight shaking ruined the effect a bit. He was clearly over reacting. Sure it was cold and sure it hurt and sucked but she wasn't frozen. She was fine. For the life of her she didn't know why she was shaking. She didn't even feel cold anymore!
Her eyes widened a fraction as something clicked in her mind. Something very bad. She was trembling from the cold but she couldn't feel it. Her eyes drifted back to where he was pushing at her once again. Perhaps the strangest sensation she had ever felt washed over her. She could see him trying to force her up and to move but she could barely feel him. It was almost like he was pushing water at her rather then actually touching.
It was not a good thing. That she was sure of. Still the words that came out of her mouth next were not 'please help me' or 'I think I'm in trouble' or anything of the sort. No she would never allow herself to say anything of the sort no matter what the situation was. Not ever. What she said was, "I'm fine wh-where I am."
Stubborn. She was always stubborn though based on the stallion's reactions her wasn't any less then she was. She got the feeling he wouldn't let up even if she asked him to. Which would hopefully lead to good things and warm places for her because there was no way in hell she would actually ask for assistance or admit that he was right.

It pained him to have to act this way, but there seemed no other way to get through to her! If she wanted to survive, or at least avoid getting sick she'd have to listen to him whether she liked it or not! Normally Emmett would have let her go do her own thing, without protesting, but this situation called for attention.
His own situation wasn't anywhere near as bad as the mare's. Sure he was cold, but he was thick, and he wasn't in the water for too long. His body shivered and he felt it. The cold breeze against his cold body made it worse, but he could move. He'd be warming up sooner or later if he just left her there. But he wouldn't.....he couldn't. As he tried to push her, he felt her resist. Was she honestly denying any form of help? Even if she didn't actually need to be pushed toward a fire, she couldn't possibly deny company while walking herself? No! The mare couldn't even walk herself, she had already proven that in the water. Now that they were out it was worse, her legs were trying to warm up but they couldn't so they probably ached.
He'd help her whether she wanted him to or not. So after she protested once again, he barked. "MARE!" Only because he never learned her name, and 'miss' didn't seem to be working. Emmett felt bad immediately after she called her that though. "I d-do not care if-f you don't want m-my help you are g-getting it! I could leave you a-alone but it would take you m-m-much MUCH longer to g-get to warmth on your o-own. You don't need that, you need it NOW. Now stop r-resisting and at least let me assist you!" He breathed his sentence in one breath, his voice oddly harsh. Emmett wanted to apologize for snapping but he couldn't, not yet at least. "Once you're safe I will leave you alone, you'll never have to see me again." Open lie, but if it worked he was willing. Of course Emmett wouldn't leave her once they got to a fire, or anything for that matter. He wouldn't leave until she was 100% safe again.
His Father taught him that. Never leave a mare's side, even if she hates it. That's not the gentlemanly thing to do.

'Mare!' The word echoed through the air and through Amoena's head. For several long moments she simply stared blankly at him as he continued his little speech. She listened for a while though much of what he said did not actually reach her brain. Then as he finished she allowed herself a moment to think over what had just been said but not before shooting him a piercing glare.
"Don't you ever call me mare again..." She said voice low and deadly serious. Shortly after she fell into silence and lowered her eyes creasing her brows together, thinking. What he had said had impressed her and had gone almost perfectly. She hadn't needed to ask for help, it had been practically forced at her. Now...How to go along with it without surrendering?
After several long minutes of thinking she settled on something. Hopefully it would work well enough. "That better be a freakin promise bucko." She said sounding genuienly irritated by his persistence. Perhaps a part of her was. The part that wanted to live, however, was grateful that he hadn't just walked off. "If ya don't keep to it...you'll be sorry." At the moment this was a very empty threat. She would be in no position to take a few shots at him until she had thawed at the very least.
Still, it was a good way to keep her pride. Without another word she got to her feet rather awkwardly. Her brain didn't seem to be sending the right signals so what was normally a fluid motion wound up choppy and shaky and she nearly wound up tipping back over on to the ground several times. Each of these instances were followed by a short stream of curse words.

So maybe he really should keep his mouth shut and choose his words more carefully? It was his normal persona to do so, but this moment called for something different, his protective I WANT TO HELP side came out....very awkwardly at that. Emmett made a mental note to try and fix that later on in life. But he could tell that this mare was not pleased with his words, he'd have to fix that too.
The large stallion also ached to want to apologize to her for calling her mare, but he knew it wasn't a good idea. He couldn't apologize yet, he'd have to do that later, when she was safe. He was getting somewhere with her and he couldn't let that fail.
He grinned as she attempted to walk forward and he positioned himself behind her to help push. Yes! She gave in and was willing to get to safety, now all they needed to do was find....fire. There had to be some.....anywhere! It was cold, the two-leggers were bound to have fire close by. "I promise I'll leave you alone, I promise."
Part of his lie was the truth, though....he was going to leave her side once he was one hundred percent sure that she was one hundred percent safe and healthy. But what neither of them knew was how long that would take, it could be two weeks, two days....a month. He'd be there until he was satisfied.
"If you keep your eyes peeled for a fire of some sort...or a cave or anything with warmth, tell me. Concentrate on that, I've got this walking thing down I think...." Emmett was proud that he was able to get her to move, but he silently wished it wasn't as hard as it was.

Her immediate response to his pushing was a single thought impulsively screaming to kick him back. Amoena resisted this. She had agreed to let him help find shelter to get him to leave her alone. Kicking him now would likely land them back in square one. No way in hell did she want to go through the whole process again. Besides, the truth stood, she needed to warm up and fast so she settled with scowling a surprisingly non violent thing for her. No snide remarks just an unhappy face.
"Y-ya sorta suck at this whole...as-assisting thing..." She grumbled after being informed that she was supposed to be watching for the warmth. Really it was not that big of a deal but she fully intended to let him know how unhappy she was about the whole situation. From anyone else's eyes the situation would seem fair enough. He helped her walk since her legs seemed to be resisting every mental command and she kept her eyes open. Really it was Amoena that had the simpler job. This logic didn't matter to her in the least. Accepting help was simply something she would never do with a smile or a thank you.
As they moved her eyes scanned the area around them. She knew the area well. She did, after all, live not far away. Help could be found in the village and it was likely the closest spot. However she couldn't go there like this. "There's a t-two-legger camp...oon the -sand..." She said glancing over her shoulder at the stallion. From where they stood it couldn't be seen but any further in the direction they were headed and the main cluster would be seen. She couldn't have that. "It's south from here..." The small group of two-legger teepees was a bit further but it was better...for her at least.

Snarky comments were unnecessary in this specific situation, but Emmett was already fully aware that with this mare, it was next to impossible to wish for silence. Or even a nice comment, but nope....impossible. So when she scolded him for not doing his job correctly, at first the large stallion shrugged it off. There was no need to push his buttons that normally didn't exist....he couldn't explain why this mare made him get so worked him. He tried to push aside her words, but they nagged in his mind as the two of them continued to slowly, slowly walk.
"I'm helping you walk, aren't I? I can't do all the work, I'm not a super-stallion. I can only help, and help is what I'm giving you. So just be quiet and look." He snapped finally, after a few moments of silence. His legs felt extremely heavy and not only because of her weight, but his own. It felt as though they were not going anywhere, as if the two of them were walking in place and Emmett began to feel drowsy. Eh...maybe he really wasn't all that good as this assisting thing...
When she spoke again, his listened carefully. Yes! A camp! That would surely mean fire, and then she could warm up, and he could...sleep, after she fell asleep herself. "Alright, sounds excellent!" He looked at her, and grinned. They were actually going to make it, before either one of them (probably him) collapsed! "Do you know how much further?" Emmett asked, before giving her a huge push, adrenaline pumping harder than ever. BOY did he want to get her to safety.

The familiar desire to plant her forelegs and kick him came forward in her mind once more and she snorted angrily. She snarled deciding once again that kicking him would accomplish nothing. She settled for flicking her tail several times hoping to catch him with it at least a little. It wasn't the most effective way of blowing of steam or showing agitation but it worked well enough for her.
For a while she had been certain that they weren't going to get anywhere fast. This was partly because the grin he cast in her direction made her really want to turn around and beat him senseless. Gritting her teeth she swallowed the violent urge. Without him there was no way to make it to the beach camp and she would be forced to chose between the village and freezing. With a burst of energy that hadn't been there before they started moving quickly towards the sand. The speed was really quite amazing for two chilled horses.
She laughed quietly at the thought then shook her head. The cold was messing with her brain. "At this rate...we should be there in...a little while...half of an hour at the most." Amoena decided to try and help a little more. Somehow she felt weaker than before, not as cold, it felt like there was a fire burning in her actually, but her strength was still slipping. The thought of shelter helped her focus despite this until her steps almost seemed normal.
It wouldn't be long now. She would be warm, safe, and rid of a certain pest.

As Amoena walked thinking of ways to hurt him, Emmett was busy thinking of ways to easily stay by her side once they arrived at safety. Surely she wouldn't allow a single second of his time and would probably slip away once she was done freezing and Emmett was snoring, but he still hoped it would be easier than that. He didn't want her to leave, not after he helped her.
Maybe the camp wouldn't even be there, maybe it was just an illusion...her mind reacting to her frozen body. Hopefully that wouldn't be the case but if it was it would also work to his advantage. He'd have the opportunity to force the mare to be with him longer than she wanted to. It wasn't like Emmett was a player who was looking to get some action, or even a friend. He just wanted her to be safe. Maybe she'd allow him to escort her back to her home? Doubtfully.....
When she answered his question, he practically stopped pushing and walking for a second before picking back up again. A half-hour wasn't really that long but in their current situation a half-hour very well could have been a whole day. He needed to get to warmth and safety now! Now! He also needed to think of a plan to stay with her, but that would come after.
"Hurry!" He mumbled, not to her in particular and not to himself but just to nature....to time...to speed....to everything.
HURRY! Yes, they needed to hurry....although Emmett could feel the mare get weaker and himself as well, they needed to pick it up. It took every ounce of his selflessness not to tell the mare to stop, to take a break. It wasn't practical and his father wouldn't approve. His father helped his mother get better when she was in distress, but their task was a lot less difficult. Just finding a unicorn to heal her leg when she was with foal. THIS was....frustrating. And the two of them weren't even friends, or acquaintances let alone mates.
