The sun had already dipped behind the mountains in the distance, but the moon was bright enough this night to illuminate the glade in which the cub now resided. Merikh paced idly alongside the shining stream that cut thought the soft and dew-kissed grass of the clearing. The sight was indeed beautiful, but beauty was a petty thing to the dark-hearted child. His eyes flicked darkly over his reflection in the rippled water, sneering at himself before swiping a paw in the water before turning swiftly away. "Hmph."
Lawrence Hadley House looked up at the moon, glad that he had been able to sneak away from his ever-protective parents, even if just for a little bit, to think a bit. He was quite young and had very little grasp on the world, but even the smallest things fascinated him, and he wanted to know more. He was traveling down a stream, following the current and watching the fish slip through te water under the dull moonlight. It was a bit chilly for his tastes, but that wasn't going to keep him in the cave.
As he heard the light splash of what seemed to be a distressed fish, the young cub's eyes turned quickly upstream to where the second cub was, looking so entranced at the pathetic little creatures that lived in the murky water. His steps stopped and the cub's eyes narrowed, ears pressing back against his skull. What a cub. Merikh bet to himself that he'd be annoying like all the rest. Maybe he was a suckup. Or one of those who believe life to be happy and pure. His nose twitched and he turned to face the cub fully, body stiff.
At the feeling of movement nearby, Lawrence looked up to see another cub downstream of him a little bit, facing him and looking as though he were about to hold down a fort. He trotted up to him and cocked his head to the side. "Hello," he offered in a very simply tone, a look of curiosity replacing the space on his face that would be occupied by a grin by most other cubs.
There wasn't an annoying voice. No bright eyes and overly enthusiastic grin. Still, there was something. After all. There was always something. Merikh was silent for a few long moments, looking over this odd cub that was annoying in the fact that he simply wasn't annoying like the rest. The rest, he could put up with; he could ignore them, or shoot them down, or mock their ideals. Something was terribly, terribly wrong here. His ears twitched and he gave a light scowl, looking to the side, then to their reflection(in which his frown seemed to deepen), before he met the other's gaze once more. "Good evening."
They had greeted each other, but this cub was the first that he had ever met. He glanced around a bit, then up at the moon for another brief moment before looking back at the other cub. "What are you doing out here so late?"
The cub was silent for another long moment. What was this? A stranger, inquiring about his life. Well, it had happened before. With all those obnoxious cubs out there. He considered it quite rude, and somewhat annoying in itself(it was apparant that the cub knew very, very little about normal conversation). Well, the cub hadn't really done anything to get on his bad side... "I don't want to deal with my mother right now." He shook his head, the rings in his ears giving a gentle rattle. "So incompetent, that one. Sad, really..." There was a pause as he thought. "Though you're out as well. As old as me, too. A little hypocritical, don't you think?"
Lawrence nodded at his reasoning - it was acceptable enough, though perhaps a bit vicious towards his mother. "But... I know why I'm out..." He blinked at the other cub. "Your reasoning wouldn't necessarily be the same as mine, and since I don't know your reasoning compared to mine, I ask."

Merikh looked to the other, flicking his tail lightly and shrugging. He was somewhat irked that he had come back with such a solid comeback, but he respected him for it. "I suppose you're right. What I should have said, I suppose, is What are you doing out here so late?" His head tilted to the side for a moment, earrings glinting in the bright moonlight. He somewhat liked this cub, though he'd never admit it. It wasn't often that he met someone that he could hold a decent conversation with.

Lawrence shrugged, "A chance to escape protective parents, I suppose." He looked back into the river a moment - there was a fish caught behind some rock - and he watched it struggle a moment before figuring out to go around the rock. It was a young fish, and only about half the size of the usual. It had learned a life lesson in just that moment, and it fascinated Lawrence that he had witnessed it.

Merikh followed the other's gaze to the fish, not bothering to reply to his statement. His brow furrowed as he watched it struggle around the rock and he huffed, shaking his head and diverting his gaze downstream. Such a small and pathetic thing. One life lesson learned, but it was the start of many; one part of the gruesome ordeals of life. To tell the truth, he pitied the thing. Snorting, he looked back to the other cub, examining him closely.

Lawrence brought his eyes up to meet the other, and watched him watching him, cocking his head to one side in curiosity. The silence felt strange between them to him, but he wasn't sure what to say to break it...
