It was a crisp morning, but the sunrise held hints of the upcoming spring. Already the landscape was beginning to thaw, and though the air still carried the bite of winter, it was growing softer, more welcoming. Jonquil looked forward to warm, bright spring days, though he knew that after a time, he'd long for the serenity of winter.
Sometimes, he thought the seasons needed to be shorter. Inevitably, they felt like they lasted just a little too long, and his appreciation of them waned with the passing months.
He picked his hooves up carefully as he walked through a clearing, doing his best to soak in the sights before all the snow melted away. Truly, this winter had been a good one, and he had many fond memories; meeting Tsuki, most notably. She was proving to be a good friend, and someone he would certainly like to get to know much better. Just thinking about it made him smile a little bit.
Of course, daydreaming about Tsuki was likely the reason he wasn't paying attention to where he was going. Normally it wouldn't have been much of a problem, but it just so happened that someone else was in a similar predicament, and neither of them noticed their sudden approach to one another until they collided.
Startled, he stepped back quickly, a flurry of snow rising around his hooves as he retreated from whatever he'd just run into. It took only a second for him to realize it was a mare, and she looked just as startled as he did.
"I'm sorry!" He truly was, and his tone reflected it. "I wasn't watching where I was going. You aren't hurt, are you?"

It had been quite the morning, she had to kind of convince her adopted father that she was alright to go out on her own. She knew he was only being protective and was just looking out for her well being, but sometimes she felt kinda.. Squished under it all. Making her way, away from home she struck out to see what she could see today. She was still young and growing into her wings that were pulled in close to her sides. Mindy looked around, at first, bright blue eyes taking in the sights as she could before she would have to return home again.
She could already feel that the season of cold was starting to vanish, already the hot springs were feeling like a boiling pot, she eased into more cooler places. It was a change for once since she had moved in with Minty and his mate... That she still had yet to meet... Shaking her short mane some, her feathered charm poking her in the eye in the process.
"Ow." She shook her head again, her lips pulling back some to reveal the fangs she grew to acquire... Unsuspectingly of course.
Things were quite that morning, but someone soon caught her ear, something snapped behind her. Stopping Mindy looked back at the silence of the trees behind her. She picked up her pace some, the snapping came again. she stopped, listened still heard nothing. Wings pulling in closer to her sides, she kept moving, her head turned to look over her shoulder. Not noticing that she had entered a clearing. At this time she had come to be at a brisk pace and ran into something... Quite solid.
Wheeling backwards, her bright blue eyes became almost saucer sized as she glanced up at the stallion from where she sat. Blinking a couple times it took a few minutes for his questions to sink into her already panicking skull. Was she alright? Of course, nothing was bruised or broking that she knew of.
"No, no, I'm alright. I just." She looked back over her shoulder as the snapping had ceased when she entered the clearing beside the crunching that had come from her steps. "I don't think I was looking where I was going, either... But I think something's following me..." Standing quickly, her short tail dusting off her rump some before she was on the stallion's other side looking back the way she came as if he were a wall or something. Her breath coming in sharp gasps, one had to wonder if she was really, alright.

If anything, fear was the last thing he'd expected from the mare. Blinking, Jonquil watched with concern as she danced behind him, not quite believing that she was as all right as she said she was. Still, the more pressing concern was whether someone was actually following her - if necessary, he'd send her along her way and do his best to divert any pursuer.
Still, Jonquil wasn't a fighter. He hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Narrowing his gaze across the clearing, he scanned it quickly, looking for any indication that the mare was being followed. He couldn't see anyone, but that didn't mean they weren't there.
Concern on his face, he shifted his stance to better shield the mare, and asked, "How long have they been following you?" Brow furrowing, he added, "Does anyone else know where you are?"

There wasn't anything there, it was just things her mind might have played up. Shaking her head some she looked back the way she had come before stepping back away from the stallion a little. Things coming too much into a different perspective this time, standing so close to a stranger? Her father would have her hide if he knew about that one.. Ears turning back some she looked away from the stallion as he looked at her asking questions again.
"My father knows that I've gone out, but he doesn't know that I am here at this exact spot." She gasped lightly, ears perching forward. "And I don't know, I just heard snapping noises as I was walking this way. I would stop and the noises stopped. I walk again it started snapping again." Puzzled, Mindy closed her eyes trying to block out everything, already a bit of bloor trickled down her lip as she bit at it.
Eyes flaring open, she looked down, or tried to as she dislodged her fang from her lip. Oh not again! She always forgot about those... Things. She didn't know where they came from, nor did she even really want to think about them. The coppery taste of her own blood flooded her mouth as she lapped at the small wound at her lip. This sent her into another panic, wondering if the stallion would noticed, of course he would and more then likely jump to many conclusions.
"Perhaps... It was just me..." She said quickly backing away again, the soft snow crunching under her hooves as she moved. Her expression in a frown trying to hide her fangs, and the blood wound in her lip.

He wasn't sure what she was more frightened of - the noises that had been following her, or him. To Jonquil, it was absurd that the mare might be afraid of him, as he had no intention of hurting her, but then, she didn't know that. If she was being pursued it was only natural that her defenses would be up and she would be wary of everything. It was the smart thing to do, and he really couldn't blame her, not that he would have anyhow.
Still, he had to find a way to calm her down. There was no way he could allow her to wander off as wound up as she was. If there was someone following her, though they seemed to have backed off when she found company, it wouldn't be right to let her head back into that situation. If they'd gone for good, his conscience still wouldn't allow him to walk away from such a distressed mare.
Smiling gently, doing his best to appear as peaceful as possible, he didn't push her by stepping toward her when she backed away. He had a feeling that would only make things worse, and he didn't want to pressure her. He had the idea that she'd been getting pressured enough as it was, and he didn't want that for her.
No visible trace of a threat in his face or in his posture, he ducked his head, still keeping one ear turned toward the line of trees, but otherwise giving her his full attention. "I'm glad that whatever it is seems to have stopped. I'm Jonquil, by the way. I'm really sorry that I bumped into you, but I'm not sorry that it seems to have made whatever it was go away. Are you going to be all right, miss?"

Silence came to the mare as she looked around from her hiding place behind the stallion. The noises had been silenced since she had come to a halt in her new place. Ears twitching a little, Mindy remained a bit edgy. Perhaps it was her right to be, but then again, not everyone could be on such edges she almost constantly found herself upon. Large blue eyes soon found themselves looking toward the stallion once more, her face becoming flushed at the thoughts that were filling her head.
Why do I hide behind him? she thought to herself, wondering why, she hadn't met him before... Perhaps it was because he was the first living thing she had seen in a long time since her adoptive father took her in from the cold. Her wings remained pinned to her sides, she was unable to use them within the limits of her father, she feared them in some way, in another she rightly didn't know 'how' to use them as her breed were meant to.
"y..yes, it is a good thing..." She nodded quickly, her short mane flopping with the motions. "My name's Mindy, kind of a knock off of my adoptive father's name, which is Minty." Mindy gave a small shrug before looking around once more, her ears perching straight atop her head.
Would she be alright? She couldn't tell, her nerves were all tight and her wings pressed so close to her sides that they seemed painted upon her body. Her short tail twitched behind her as she thought about if she were alright. She came to the conclusion that she would be, sooner or later...
"Yes, I think I'm alright. And I think it was actually I whom bumped into you." She said softly, her head lowering a little to hide the fangs that would expose themselves as she spoke. "I fear that whatever follows with always follow, like a shadow that will never leave me in peace." At this she looked away just a little, trying not to make eye contact for a moment longer.

She was still tense all over, and it didn't seem that she would be calming any time soon. While he would have liked to put her at ease immediately, he understood that someone under such duress would need time to calm, especially in the presence of a strange stallion. So, rather than pointing it out, or even suggesting verbally that she was safe with him, he simply listened to her.
It was hard for him to not seek her eyes, as he was accustomed to eye contact while speaking, but she seemed bothered by it. In fact, Jonquil had never met a more nervous mare in his whole life. Her own unease was making him feel a little fatigued himself, if only because he imagined it must have been excessively tiring to be on high alert all the time. He much preferred a more laid-back, casual lifestyle.
That kind of thing seemed impossible for Mindy, though. At least, if her shadow was still around, anyway.
Keeping his voice easy, he decided to focus on only a few things that she had said, and let the others rest. "Mindy's a nice name. It suits you." Tail swishing, he smiled, nodding in the direction she had been running. "As for your father, would you like me to help you find him? I don't have anything pressing to do today; I was actually just enjoying a walk, so if you'd like, it'd be no trouble."
