Kisala was out a little later than usual, but she knew her adoptive mother wouldn't mind-- she trusted Kisala a lot more than she did Ajiiel, and Kisa very rarely got into trouble.

It was just that she wanted a nighttime launch for her little shuttle, and so she'd gone to the nearby park when the sun was just setting to set it up. It hadn't taken too long, and now she just had to wait for it to get darker so that she could see it light up against the night sky-- as far as it went up, anyhow. It was just a regular bottle-rocket, something anybody could make, but she still loved it. She'd attached some glow-sticks to the sides so that it would be all lit up.

As it got a bit darker, the teenager broke the glow-sticks, giving the bottle rocket a soft light.

While Ishizuke's phobia of the night itself had begun to subside, her nervousness around strangers, especially those bigger than her, had in no way diminished, and she still carried the small bag and Mace with her. Not that she particularly trusted the little bottle against the horrors she now knew lurked in the shadows, but it was some protection and it enabled her to actually get out of the house for the fresh air she craved. Every night was getting warmer, and she could almost taste the spring coming.

It had taken a fair amount of willpower to return to the park, but she had to do it eventually, and facing her fears now was better than letting them master her forever. She was out early for her, the last rosy traces of sunset still glowing in the east when she cleared the last hill before the park and started on the path through the middle. She wasn't carrying a flashlight, and she walked as quietly as possible, making herself almost a shadow. Barely visible, unnoticed. That was the way to be.

And then something caught her attention. Little flickers of light coming into being. Little flickers of neon light. Curious, Ishi moved off the path and down toward the source, looking surprised when she realized that the little lights were glowsticks attached to something. She looked at the person who had just cracked them, lit with the pale glow, and moved down into hearing range. "Hi," she said quietly. "Why the glowsticks?"

Kisala smiled, looking at the other girl. She felt certain she'd seen her before, but couldn't really remember when. It must have been a while ago,
"So that way I can see it when it goes up," she said, motioning to the base of the rocket,
"Since it doesn't have real fire or anything. I figure at least this way it's lit up a little bit. And it kinda looks pretty."

The glowsticks bathed Ishizuke's pale skin with a soft green tint, which Kisala thought was pretty neat-- the glowsticks barely did anything for her own skin like that! Though, of course, they still looked pretty even without making her skin look green.

The explanation made sense, and Ishi tilted her head at the rocket. What sort of madness was this, then? Scientific madness? She decided that was the best sort and came closer to inspect the rocket. She noticed with vague amusement that her skin more or less reflected the green glow in a way Kisala's didn't. But the amusement passed after a moment, and she looked up at Kisala and smiled.

"So this is a rocket, yeah?" she asked. "One of the air pressure kinds?"

Kisala nodded,
"Yep! I made it myself. Just release the cap and it goes up!" she looked up at the stars. Something about their soft glow really called out to her. She'd get up there some day! She had to!

"D'you wanna see it go off? I've another one to set off too, but I left that one at home."

Ishizuke smiled at the other girl's enthusiasm and followed Kisala's gaze to the stars. She liked looking at them, but for her, they were always just a pretty abstraction. Nothing more, nothing less. That had, for some reason, always disappointed her mother. Maybe it was because Mercury was a physicist and had hoped Ishi would take an interest in her field of study. Either way, stars were stars and she had no real investment in them.

Looking back at Kisala, she nodded in response to the question before realizing that she ought to reply with words. Lapsing silent in the conversation when she had something to say was probably rude. "Yeah, I'd like to see how one of these works," she admitted. "I've seen them in stores or from a distance, but never really up close."

Kisala motioned to the bicycle pump attached to the rocket,
"It's really pretty easy. I just pump that up and then the water gets pressurized with the air and fwump! up it goes!" She giggled, then waved her arm back a little bit,
"You might want to stand back a little, though. When it goes up you'll probably get wet if you're standing too close."

Kisala had brought a raincoat for just this reason. After all, her mother would probably kill her if she stood about in the cool night air all wet.

Uff, it was too cold for her to be getting wet. Shuddering at the thought of being wet in the chilly air, Ishizuke shook her head and hurried back behind Kisala, still fixated on the rocket and the pump. As much as her mother had tried to interest her in physics, Ishi just couldn't seem to get into it, but maybe this was more her speed. It was pretty infantile, when looked at as a machine, but still nifty.

"How high do these usually go?" she asked, maintaining the conversation even though she was a bit farther back than Kisala.

Kisala put the raincoat on quickly, then started pumping it up,
"Not super super high so you can't see it, but high enough to look cool," she assured the other girl,
"And then they fall back to the ground with this huge splat! Sometimes they break. Actually, most of the time they break. I'm working on something else that maybe won't break, but the bottle rockets are still fun too."

"Sounds like fun," Ishi said slowly. "Sounds like they'd be fun in the summer." Nodding to herself, she watched Kisala pump up the bottle and ran a hand through her hair. "Are you just modifying the original design of this to keep it from breaking when it comes down, or is it something completely different?" she asked curiously. "And what is it that breaks 'em? Are you using glass bottles?"

She blinked, somewhat surprised at the flood of her own questions. She hadn't been aware she was possessed of that much scientific interest.
