Possibly the worst on record, certainly the most lethal. Currently the death toll stands at 181, though it is expected to go higher, perhaps much higher. Police are continuing to hunt down the arsonist believed to be responsible.

There are still 24 fires burning in Victoria (plus some in New South Wales), another heatwave predicted in a few days time.

I don't quite know what to say - so much devastation, so quickly to spread. My love goes out to all who have been affected by fires; in the past, now and in the future.

I had seen something on the news at work- but (figures) all the title said was "Fires in Australia" which, when you cannot hear the tv, does little for understanding where in Australia.

I hope for the safety of your friends and families if you have any living out by the areas devastated from the fires.

It's heartbreaking and terrifying. I just feel so upset about it...I can't watch the news anymore. As long as it stays away from my sister's property...it's about an hour and a half away from her at the moment, and with a decent wind they could be in trouble. Her parents in law lost a large part of their farm, but luckily they managed to save the house.

A terrible situation indeed, as fire is downright terrifying. It all echoes the wildfires we get here in the states (in the Southwestern parts mainly) all too closely.

Yeah, my folks live on the outskirts of the Yarra Valley, and it came uncomfortably close. It's still really hard to comprehend the hundreds of families which have completely lost their homes, and also often their loved ones.

Victoria has bushfires every year, but this time has been the most devastating. Whole towns have been destroyed. In many cases, people thought they had more time to evacuate, when in reality, they only had minutes.

On a lighter note, I did hear that one of the few people that successfully managed to save their home, did so with Pepsi Max! Apparently, the fire was between the owner and his hose/pump, so he used Pepsi Max to make a path to it, lol.

I was so worried for my sister and brother in law! It must be so strange around the affected areas now, like a warzone. It's just so tragic. It's so hard to comprehend that the fires were deliberately lit!
