They came into Tomkin with nightfall having already settled itself around them. The atmosphere seemed hauntingly quiet, although the male was certain the territory was brimming with life, though, he did wonder if some of their pack mates would join them sometime later. Heavy paws moved slowly, weaving between trees with an easy pace, his destination not too far ahead, and as the couple came upon the entrance, the larger wolf paused to peer at their dark home, before removing his eyes to stare at the female behind him.

"This," he said, turning back to the mouth of the cave, "Is the main den. Meetings are held here, and it is the main gathering site. Beneath the surface it branches off into several other caverns, and those in turn branch off into several more. I have not explored them all so I do not know the extent of the network, but it is pretty vast, so don't get lost. A couple of hundreds of feet from this starting point, you'll find an underground waterway...this is the primary source of water for the pack, as where it exits out of the caves is rather difficult to get to from the surface." He paused in his speech, moving forward into the mouth of his haven.

As soon as he found himself in the cave, the large male searched about the floor, his keen eyesight able to glare through the darkness and land on exactly what he was looking for. Laying himself down, the wolf entwined himself with the tines of a rather large antler; the species of the creature it had fallen from was still unknown to him, but it was certainly something he had never seen before. Aguta invited Selene to follow and make herself comfortable, open to answering any questions she might have as well.

Selene was exhausted yet she forced herself to stretch a bit while listening to him explain. When he motioned for her to make herself comfortable she did so at once. Laying down across from 'wraith' as she knew him, her breathing evened out slowly and her violet eyes became sharply focused on the alpha.

"You welcome me into your pack, yet I know I am most beholden to you, tell me how might I best aid this pack...my pack."

A small smile made her eyes shimmer, it felt so good to once again have a place where she wanted to be, a pack that she belonged to and could serve. It breathed purpose into her small form and made her proud.

The male watched her silently, observing the female as she lay exhausted against the cool stone. His first thought immediately connected with the prospect of food and figured Selene was probably hungry, and even if she wasn't, that it was best to at least offer. "We have a small food storage area of the den, farther back...if you would like something to eat, I could go and find you something there. It's mostly leftovers from the last kill," he told her, looking over her as he slide from his antler onto his haunches.

All the while he was contemplating her statement. Well, she had told him her qualifications earlier in the day, so he didn't doubt that at some point she would aid the pack considerably. But was she talking about immediately? There were few things he wanted, and the pack (though small) could provide for itself rather well, so what could he tell her.

He did consider his search for an heir. But would she be a good candidate? More importantly, would she even agree to such a desire? This wasn't a monarchy like she was used to, Tomkin was very open, leisurely, and it's system was more or less a democracy despite the fact that Aguta's word was last. He hoped there wouldn't be any point where he had to be the iron law, but if he had to exert his authority, he would do so. Looking away and into the darkness of the open mouth of the cave, he spoke. "Like most, I desire a second generation, an heir of sorts. I would like my bloodline to continue, but not having a mate I find myself without that possibility. Do you think you can help me with this? I require only your assistance caring for young ones when they come."

"Food would be most appreciated, thank you." She didn't care if they were leftovers, anything was better then the scraps she had been getting within the reign. In her own pack at least she had been able to hunt for herself when she was hungry. It was good to know she would once again be able to feed herself, reliance on others rankled and left a bad taste in her mouth. Her weakness was something she had always struggled to push back and overcome.

She focused back on Aguta's words and tipped her head in consideration. She hid the shock in her lavender eyes before looking down her voice steady.
"I know that I may not look like much, an omega, weak." The word was mildly tinted in bitterness.
"But my family was strong, my bloodline was old, now I am the only one left. If I could aid you to ensure that your line survives...after you have aided me to survive. Then I will do so."

At the confirmation of hunger, he pulled himself forward a few steps, gliding in the direction of the food before he paused to listen to the rest of Selene's reply. It was surprising Selene was willing to so far for the service he was offering, but as she agreed to his request he felt a slight irresolute creep forward. While he wasn't asking any more of her than to watch over pups, she was also willing to have said pups for him...was she really alright with this? And was he perfectly sound with having the female as who he chose to have an heir with. While her family may have been stronger, their genes desirable, it was the condition of Selene in the present that concerned him the most. Would she be able to bare him healthy offspring?

"Are you sure?" he asked her, his voice firm and sturdy. Every ounce of seriousness was hanging in his voice, and as the alpha stared at the smaller female, he wanted to make sure she meant what she had said.

Selene pulled herself to her feet and frowned at him her voice was steady and filled with pride. "You see me now, at my weakest Wraith. No food, no water, no family, nothing. Yet still I escaped that place, still I am alive and willing to fight to remain so. You cannot be asked to believe that I will regain my strength and form, but I will show you in time. Any pup I give to you will be healthy and grow far stronger then I ever could. Even if I must give my last breath for healthy life to come into this world then I would to keep my promise."

She looked at him her pale eyes watching, waiting for the response. She wanted him to see that she could be of use in his pack, that she was worth saving. If no one could see that then why had she left the reign at all? She brushed the thought away and lifted herself a bit more her chest puffing with pride.

The wolf turned back, staring at her as she spoke to him so firmly. Respect was certainly one benefit of her argument, and as he listened he trusted what she had to say, seeing no other meaning beyond it, but couldn't help but wonder if it was wise of her to admit this. "I understand," he said, giving a small nod, "But I question why you would be willing to give your life to bring someone else into the world." The question was rhetorical. That concept was hard for him to fathom. Perhaps it was because he was male, or maybe because there was hardly a connection between him and any female or offspring.

He turned away, shifting back into the darkness to search for the treasures of the cave, looking to the pile of preserved meat before digging into it, picking out a rather large chunk connected to the fibula of some beast. Trotting back to the front of the cave, he sat the meal before Selene before turning to sit across from her and back between his prized antler.

Selene fell on the meat ravenous, in the Reign she was lucky not to have starved. She finished the meat quickly and turned her lavender gaze back to the male sitting across from her.

"Thank you..." She tilted her head and gave a wry smile.

"In my pack, we used to say that there was no greater gift then to pass on ones blood, ones very life, to create something new and fresh for this world. How amazing it would be if my life could somehow make way for something better, stronger, or more beautiful. Perhaps it's a foolish thought, but it seems so selfish to live long only for ones self, in the end who will appreciate it when your gone." She shrugged softly and rested her head on her paws.

"It's worth it to me, and to see your blood pass on...it would be a great honor."

"Hmm," the male murmured as she explained her disposition. The sound wasn't at all condescending, or even questioning, but was a confirmation of understanding. Though he couldn't entirely imagine the ideals of Selene's pack, nor their traditions, he had an open mind and accepted how she perceived family and what it meant to her to bring pups into the world. While the value for him was little more than passing on genetic code, for her it was something far more monumental. And the idea of living on even after death...now that was something that struck his interest. Though he didn't see offspring as much of a harbinger of memory, he could understand how someone could live on in those they create.

"It's interesting the traditions of your pack," he admitted, "And I thank you for allowing me to take part in it."

She relaxed slowly as she realized that he had understood, it was a hard concept to grasp for those who simply mated, raised their pups, and then moved on. The pack had tenderly fostered each pup into a role and when the elder wolves passed on it was a stronger wiser wolf that was ready to full fill the position. The beauty of keeping a history was being able to learn from all past mistakes and successes.

"I have much to thank you for as well...Wraith." She smiled and rested her head on her paws. "Have you ever been close to death? I think everything looks somehow brighter and better after...the air itself is a sweet treat."

Had he ever been close to death? The concept was an interesting one and certainly a question he didn't remember having ever been asked before. The coolness of his half lidded eyes flickered lightly, sparking at the ideas that swam through his head, memories that persisted, and questions he also had about the subject. While Selene turned it into a bright statement, he couldn't help but wonder why it was something that could inflict a positive outlook on life and ones surroundings. Blood soaked fur, the scent of rot and the soft caress of the last breath of a target against his fur was something he was very familiar with...and it was these transgressions that haunted him so. What was there after death and did being confronted with it make life any grander? Selene seemed to think so. Aguta, however, couldn't remember a time where he could feel the icy wave of death so many wolves had drowned within before him.

"No," he murmured. There was something older about is voice as the comment came, something almost hinting a weakness that was quickly hid by his continuing voice, "But I feel I do understand that appreciation for life we sometimes need reminding of."

"I'm sure many wouldn't hesitate to call me foolish for trying to see the positive side of my life...after all that's happened. Yet if I were to allow all the things that have been said and done to drag me down..I would be no better then the ones who abused me, I would be abusing myself." She shrugged softly and stretched her self out.

Oh how wonderful it felt to let her cramped muscles loosen, to relax, she felt safe at last. Maybe this time, this place, she could make a new attempt, family, friends.
With any luck there would soon be pups, the joy of youth and tenderness.

The wolf tipped his antler, nestling with it as he watched the female, his ebony paws laced between the thick tines, and his proud muzzle paused to rest to the side. His eyes hardly left her -especially when she was talking with him. It wasn't only her words that spoke to the wolf, but also her tone, her posture, and the very words she selected that had Aguta at attention. Her modest wisdom was something to be admired. Something he was thankful his pack would have the opportunity to enjoy, and was no longer rotting away in the ironically named, RoT.

"I'm glad you feel that way and I think you're a wonderful asset to my pack. Teaching the youth the same values you have express is something I feel is fundamental," he told her, not withholding his words. He felt no reason to keep quiet. "You're quite brave."

"Brave?" She smiled before looking down modestly. "Perhaps, but bravery without any strength or backing is often foolish, I'm just glad to finally be in a place where I don't have to live in fear, it's not living at all."

She tipped her muzzle and looked at him curiously. "You are brave as well, to take a chance on me, I won't let you down."

Aguta listened to what she had to say, understanding from the moment he met her that she would be an interesting case study. Her ideology was absolutely fascinating to the male who, as he heard her explain, grew more intrigued by her almost philosophical perspective. She was certainly wise. It was only a shame she spent as much time as she did in Reign of Terror, having wasted so much of that uniqueness. "You make an excellent argument."

“Perhaps…” Aguta did wonder if he would call what he was doing harboring Selene in Tomkin was brave. If anything it seemed extremely moronic of him; but the decision was made and now the future of the pack rested on each of their shoulders, knowing they were harboring perhaps the one key to their survival or destruction.
