Casia sat outside the record store with a bag full of albums and waited for Jane to come pick her up. It was cold out and she shivered in her coat, sticking her hands in her pocket. "You're bumming me out!" she whispered loudly at the uncooperative atmosphere. Cold weather was her favourite kind of weather, but only from under a warm blanket. When she had to sit and wait in the chill it could be a nuisance. She needed to distract herself, and kicked her legs in a bid to get the blood circulating in her body. To distract her thoughts, she began to hum, half-muttering the words to the melody. "If you've got trouble, then you got less trouble than me... You say you're worried, you can't be as worried as me..." Hum de dum, kick, kick, sing. It seemed like it was going to be a while longer until her guardian got there.

The nice thing about living with Juno was the fact his father was oft too busy for him (which wasn't really a nice thing, when he really thought about it), but that meant he was often given a couple of dollars and told to get out of the house for a little while. Okay. So maybe it wasn't that great, but Leviathan had to at least try to be positive about the situation. Juno had even let him go into town with Rook dogging him every where he went. He did want to grow up, right?

Well, not at this price.

The lobster-boy handed over the money for his new CD and pocketed the changed, shoving his CD into his coat pocket as he ventured back outside. The cold weather didn't really bother him, being a sea-beast and all, it was actually the heat of summer that got him. (Which was probably why the boy practically lived there all summer long.) He was just about to turn and head home when some singing, or half-singing, or something, caught his ear. Too much of a boy to not be curious, Leviathan turned and walked over to the stranger.

"...what are you doing?"

Casia startled as she heard a voice behind her. Why did every strange boy who came near her feel the urge to creep up behind her and ask what she was doing? Why not leave well enough alone? Turning irritably to look at this new bother to have to deal with, she saw an awfully strange looking boy and fluttered her wings at him annoyedly. She was cold and grumpy and impatient, and she didn't want to have to deal with this. She caught herself at the last minute, though. Count to ten, don't let the siren thoughts take over. Primly adjusting her skirt, she said "Deep sea diving." with as straight a face as she could. "What're you doing?"

She reviewed the facts and winced. She HAD let the siren thoughts slip out, but she supposed the fact they had slipped out in a polite tone of voice sort of made up for it. Sort of. A mental kick prompted her to amend her statement. "I mean singing. And waiting." Not that it was any of his business. For all she knew he could be a young looking kidnapper, and she scooched away from him slightly. "You know? La-la-la, do-re-mi?" He must have heard her, now that she thought about it. Surely he knew what singing was, so why bother asking?

Leviathan blinked once before he sneered. It was one of those automatic reactions. Casia had sneaky siren thoughts and Leviathan had nasty b*****d reactions. But the girl actually gave him a reasonable answer, so the lobster-boy supposed maybe he could try to be civil as long as she did the same. "Yeah. I know." Leviathan sighed. You know, if she had just stayed short and snappish, she'd have been a lot more interesting.

"What are you waiting for? I don't think the bus stops here," he remarked idly, kind of wondering why he was even carrying on this conversation. Maybe he hoped he could get into some kind of fight. He was kind of in the mood for a fight. Or maybe it was just because Casia was pretty. Pretty girls (and maybe just girls in general) were proving to be more and more distracting. He was a very curious boy, grumpy or not. He didn't fail to notice the way the girl scooched away from him, but he wasn't about to bring that up yet. He had a coat and gloves on, after all. She couldn't know about his arms.

Besides, she had wings. Like she could talk about being weird.

He had sneered and Casia felt a brief but determined flash of anger. He hadn't told her what he was doing, either. That was another thing about strange boys, they wiggled their way out of telling people what they were doing, and it annoyed Casia to no end. And the nice little voice that reminded her to count to ten was getting quieter and quieter what with the cold and the waiting and the boy with the kelp coloured hair and lack of manners. So she counted to ten again, but grudgingly, and gave him a bright smile. "For unicorns. Or flocks of bluebirds who will swoop from the sky to join in my singing. Why else would I be waiting?" Or in other words, mind your own business. "But enough about me. Why are you standing here? The bus doesn't stop here."

Perhaps it was just the foul chill in the air, but he seemed to her to be a particularly nosy kind of guy, and she found him rubbing her all the wrong ways. Normally Casia could be nice to just about anybody if pressed, but Casia Greystone seemed a bit more cynical than Casia Fairhaven had been. She could deal with, even like rude people if they proved there was something likable about them. This boy just stood around being weird and rude and annoying. In the end, she supposed it was the sneer that had done it. The sneer wasn't something she could put up with.

"I came over here because you were singing. And it was pretty," Leviathan answered matter-of-factly, barely leaving off the 'duh' at the end. It wasn't his fault if he was attracted to pretty girls, especially ones that did interesting things, like sing. "I'm walking home. I just don't really want to go home yet," the boy continued, grunting a little when his brain finally caught up with his mouth. What was he doing, spilling all of his troubles to a complete stranger? Yeah, right.

The boy shook his head and leaned against the bench the siren was parked on. This did not bode well with him. Normally, all the girls got along with him, no question. It didn't even matter if he was cross with them because they were on his beach, they got along all the same. What was going on? Leviathan frowned to himself and shook his head again. This was all Sable's fault. Up and leaving. What kind of father did that? Hmm. Speaking of.

"So you're waiting for your mom?" Little girls had moms. Boys had dads.

"...Oh." Casia felt a twinge of guilt. "Thanks." If he liked her singing, he couldn't be all bad, could he? She briefly considered scooching back towards him.

Then again, who said unpleasant people couldn't like singing? Just because the Blue Meanies didn't, didn't mean everyone rotten did. But deep inside, Casia still clung to the belief that everyone who appreciated music couldn't be that bad, and despite her best effort to hate him, she ended up just aiming for mild dislike. "Oh." she said again. She could understand not wanting to go home. Home was all new and confusing and full of upsetting things like Jane. "Yeah, well you gotta go somewhere." she said dispassionately. She wasn't in the mood to investigate. The siren eyed him owlishly as he asked her about her mom. He was nosy, and she flapped her wings a bit defensively. She wasn't about to call Jane her mom. Technically, yes, but she didn't feel like it. Anna felt like her mom. "Kind of." On the spur of the moment, she added "My aunt." Aunt would do for now. It put the problem at arm's length without having to really lie. "Why're you walking home?" Didn't he have a mom to drive him?

"Oh." Leviathan nodded. Sometimes he forgot not everyone had a mom and a dad. After all, he had two fathers (who were not gay together, thank you very much), so he wasn't exactly one to judge. "My dad wanted me to get out of the house and stuff. And it's not like the store is that far from home." Leviathan shrugged. He didn't really mind walking. He even kind of liked it; he was an outdoorsy creature by all means. "It's not a big deal," he added, in case she was wondering.

"I just don't want to go home yet," he repeated, as though this clarified the situation. "My brother will come get me if I'm supposed to get home, though." Okay, so Rook wasn't exactly his brother, but he came from a cabbage, so it was like Leviathan was going to get any real siblings. (Especially since his parents were both male!) "It's just stupid at home. My dad's all busy all the time and stuff. They both are." A pause. "Were. They both were. Sable left." Leviathan didn't even notice the last bit had slipped from thought to speech, just shaking his head as he considered the bleak weather.

"Winter blues suck."

Casia's eyes widened. "I'm sorry." she said, a bit less chilly towards him. Maybe he wasn't a bogue after all. "That must have been a real bummer." Yeah, kind of. That, she supposed, was another thing about strange boys. All the ones she had met so far had a tragic sort of past. Well, she supposed something had to make them strange boys in the first place and she twiddled her thumbs thoughtfully. She had a kind of sad past. She supposed this made her a strange girl. Whatever she was and whatever he was, though, she felt that she should probably try to be nicer.

She stood up suddenly. "Well, I know how to chase off winter blues." she said and reached for his hand. "Come on, let's go back into the record store." What people really needed when they weren't feeling too groovy, Casia knew, was a healthy dose of the Beatles. And though this store didn't have a record player, they did have those weird 'CD's. Giving it a listen would be good for someone suffering from the blues.

Leviathan shrugged, inwardly cursing like the devil when he realized that sad memory had become sappy pity story, but if it was going to make Casia stop trying to kill him with her looks, then he could deal with it. After all, if you didn't make a big deal out of it, no one else would, right?

"U-um, okay," the boy said, blinking owlishly as the siren took charge and all but dragged him back into the store. "I don't have any money left," he warned. Juno had only given him enough for the one CD he wanted, and besides! He was a dude. And dude's don't get that warm fuzzy feeling from shopping. (He could only assume women did; women always went shopping when they were feeling emotional on TV.)

Leviathan could only half-hope Casia didn't notice the shell on his hands, but she hadn't shrieked in disgust yet. (For someone who didn't care too much about girls, he certainly cared what they thought quite a bit.) "What are we doing?"

Casia looked back at Leviathan with a vague sort of surprised annoyance. "Money?" Just because she was brining him back in, didn't mean she was shaking him down for cash or anything. She decided this was enough fuel to continue her secret dislike of him and instead brought him to the CD shelves, scanning for the CD samplers. Finding one that had Abbey Road, she let out a small triumphant noise and grabbed the two pairs of headphones attached to it. Flicking the selection to what she wanted, she offered Leviathan a pair and a smile crept over her face as the familiar strains of Here Comes the Sun buzzed through at the sort of poor sound quality only free music store tunes could manage. Groovy.

Leviathan blinked again, but let Casia do as she may. He was never much of a movie junkie, so it never occurred to him one might go into a music store just to listen. He took the headphones, never the less, and put them on, tipping his head as he listened to the music. The lobster boy remained quiet, but he couldn't help but enjoy the music a little. It was weird, nothing he or his brothers would ever listen to, but nonetheless, he didn't really want to turn it off.

He waited until the song was over before pulling off the headphones to address Casia. "Who was that? I've never heard that before."

Casia's brown eyes widened in alarm. Never heard of The Beatles? What rock had this boy been living under? No wonder he was so unpleasant. "They're called the Beatles." she said slowly so he would understand. "They're groovy." Satisfied that she had conveyed her point in a way even he could understand, she looked satisfied with herself. "They're like medicine for when things seem totally horrible and hairy out of control." she informed him. "They'll be there when you need someone to remind you things'll be okay." She hummed the tune to demonstrate this. "Even if you're not in a music store, you'll remember the sun'll come out again and the ice'll melt on your long, cold, lonely winter."

At least he hadn't said he hadn't liked it. If he had, she'd be seriously questioning his passion for life.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2009 2:45 pm

Leviathan blinked as Casia gave him a horrified look. He almost wanted to snap at her; she didn't have to treat him like she was stupid. ".....oh," he said, not proving his intelligence. "I see." He looked back down at the free music player and blinked. "Are there lots of bands like that? Like medicine, I mean? Or are the Beatles just special?" Leviathan had absolutely no sense when it came to music. Especially older music. He was personally a score kind of guy. He just liked music, less words.

"Do you know other kinds of music?" he asked. She was good at singing, so it wasn't far-fetched. Maybe she could help him find more good instrumental music. So he could have a list the next time he weaseled ten dollars out of his guardian. "....because, ah....I like just straight up music. No words," the boy admitted, albeit a bit sheepishly.

"I don't know." said Casia. "People find different medicine in different bands. But The Beatles are special, too." she added hastily. "To me, anyway." He was obviously a music amateur, and Casia felt the warm glow of superiority.

That was, she did until he attacked her weak flank. No words! Her knowledge of The Beatles, showtunes, and feel-good songs was minutely detailed but the rest of the music world was mostly a mystery. She was going to get around to listening to classical music and stuff, but she just... Hadn't. She didn't want to admit it to him though, and tugged at the hem of her skirt thoughtfully while she tried to think of a way to not have to. Jane had instrumentals. "Of course I have." Jane called them poetry without words. What were they called? She didn't have to have heard them, just naming them would be enough...

"Vaughan Williams!" she blurted out finally. He was some dead composer or somesuch thing, right? "He was the grooviest." She forced conviction into the statement. "The grooviest."
