What's the main tonal differences between Fender Jazz and P-Basses? I always thought P-Basses had a more aggressive sound, but that was an inference based off the fact that a lot of punk guitarists had P-Basses. Of course, finding out that the punk bassist I look up to the most plays a Jazz Bass, I want to know what the real differences are.

P-basses have a generally more "thumpy" sound, with more low end. J-basses have a lot of high end in their sound, and sound very "punchy," which is why I generally prefer them for slapping.

i'm not really into p-bases. new ones tend to be crappy quality. old ones are nice, but i don't like the thick necks . jazz basses have perfect necks, but i don't prefer single coil pickups either. so fender isn't for me. but great basses/guitars.

I've found the intonation to be better on P generally but maybe that's just the specific models I've tried out, I can't be sure. A good Jazz bass has much better tonal variation though. You can go places with those lovely 2 humbuckers (and a pan knob) that your P bass's single coil just won't take you.
