All right, so this is how it's going down. We need a thread for the artists to talk about the characters they created. What inspired their creation, maybe a little bit about their personality. Powers, if they have any... or if they have any special social skills. All are welcome.
...
And no, I don't mind Mary Sues/Gary Stus, OR their cousin Lucy Lou. No matter how cheesy or cheap they may be, discuss 'em!

First contribution, copy-pasta from an entry on my LJ account. The character's name, as you'll soon find out, is Martin. Here's the link, if you want to read the full entry. CLICK.

Ode to an Early Character

Martin first made his appearance during my Elementary school phase, where many of my characters were influenced by Sonic, dinosaurs, and Dragonball Z. His name was a play on my own, sharing the first three letters; signifying some egotistical nature about me. Martin started out as a treasure hunting swordsman, donning knights armor, inspired by the game Landstalker for the Sega Genesis. My first introduction to swords and spells, Martin traveled the fictional lands looking for treasure with a familiar named Monday, and a scorpion/manta ray/eagle mount named Koojoo. There was also mention of a woman/girl named Arlene who would cheer for him or get rescued by him; but I never drew her out in this phase. I gave him a tail and "magical power," and ditched the armor, when I was inspired by Dragonball Z in the late Elementary phase.
Entering the Middle school phase, Martin disappeared from my notebooks. During that time, I had become engrossed in Pokemon and Digimon, and moved from dinosaurs to aliens and space for inspiration. And yet, Martin never truly died. With all the RPGs I played, which allowed you to name your character or file, I always ended up putting "Martin," "Martn," or "Mrtn" for the names. Legend of Zelda comes directly to mind.
Martin's next appearance would be in my early High school phase, when I stumbled upon a little something called Golden Sun. Blonde swordsman who traveled the world, trying to save it from evil and collecting treasure and power along the way. Sure, it was the element of most RPGs, but something about it screamed "Martin." Going along with my usual naming scheme, I was reminded of Martin's former essence, and that inspired me to write a fan fiction with Martin replacing Isaac and Arlene replacing Jenna. It wasn't a complete knockoff of Golden Sun... Martin would be accompanied on his journey with one spirit for each Element; and even then, he was already specialized in Water and Earth. But, near the climax of the story, Martin had even the spirit of death on his side, and fought alongside him to destroy an evil, undead threat from space. Yeah.
As deep and involving as the storyline was, *obvious sarcasm*, it was the first story I had ever completed, and I was proud. However, Martin would soon be forgotten again, as I entered the true essence of my High school phase. It was at that point when I became more interested in fantasy, and cyberworlds (the latter thanks to Megaman Battle Network), and poor Martin fell behind for a while.
Yet... I still pulled him back, later on. His next incarnation would be more magnificent than before, as a representative of two divine icons in the cyber universe. He had a power slightly greater than Light, and rode on a pegasus. This incarnation would stay on a mention bases, and was drawn only once. Once more, he fell back, lost but not forgotten; when it was decided that his Network was just taking up space.
So, where is Martin now? He will be replacing a newer character... a somewhat prodigal craftsman working alongside an Ecca Demihuman, creating swords, defeating "evil," and collecting amazing materials to forge his destiny. Arlene also has a place as Martin's rival, who has excellent skill fighting with a shield and whose partner is a Polyclops.

Speaking of Legend of Zelda Shin, I went through (who am I kidding I'm still in the middle of) a (decent, really, not horrible WAFFY stuff) Fan-Fiction based on pre existing works phase. Usually Anime and Video games.

The Legend of Zelda was the work I returned to the most, and since the main character was always Link, (in one or another of his many different incarnations) a cypher of a character (who in the games does and observes but has very little personality) who I needed to develop.

My favorite interpretation I had of the character was him as a young King, married to Zelda, and, much later, a father. (three girls named naturally enough Din, Nayru, and Farore, and two boys Niko and Sion)

This version of link was a skilled and earnest King who would probably lose the Kingdom to his idealism (optimism?) if not for his more politically savy wife Zelda. Still, when a curse threatened the kingdom, or war loomed on the horizon, King Link was a inspiring leader, and convincing ambassador, constantly riding out to do battle, or to urge the seperate (and often xenophobic) races of Hyrule to band together against imminent threats.

This Link was also a master of combat, having acquired nearly every combat skill from every Zelda game, and was happy to train his soldiers to be equally proficent with the sword.

That actually sounds pretty interesting. When I hear "fan-fiction," I usually get the shivers, but it sounds like this one has some thought into it. Were you actually working on this, or were you reading through it?

My first fictional character was Jericho. He started out as a “classic” character, being an orphan with no memory of his pass. However as I soon grow bore of his character and I modified him, this all happen a year before High-school and as the years when by he when through changes.

While I was trying to break away from the classic I made him a clergy member and use a spear instead of the classic “sword”, however I lacked a background for the poor guy.
I lucky came about the books, Journey to the East and Journey to the West. This would lead to his actual character and back story and plot for my story he was in, The Monster of God.

I quickly change him to be the descent of the first man, giving him the name Jericho Kadmon (meaning primordial man). Along with that one his parent had being a demon, but however do to his parent being killed by the angry villagers he was taken by his big brother who knew that Jericho would be hunted until the end of days for being different.

His older brother performed a ritual removing all of the demon essence out of Jericho living him human but “holy”. Those Jericho became able to use “Sutra” a purifying energy capable of damaging anyone who even held a single evil thought. However for most of his life he was raised in an orphanage own by the Church and worship a god know as the Ubiquitor.

The Ubiquitor was itself a demon in disguise who plotted to have all who stud in its way killed, he then braded this threads as “heretics” which the Church hunted down. The Ubiquitor came to Jericho in the veil of a god and demanded a prove of “faith” by having him brad a cross to his face.

It's funny how many revision your characters and stories go through Renton. When I write the characters tend to show up more or less how I want them and they stay that way (or evolve and change in ways I didn't expect) I rarely go back to the drawing board with them though, if I'm that dissaponited in a character, I just trash the story.

Jericho sounds pretty awesome though. 3nodding

Yeah, Shin, that's from a series of Zelda fan fictions I wrote a year or two ago, they where my brother's favorites and he's actually pretty picky of my work so...

I hesitate to call it fan fiction sense like you said, that's a scary, dark, place to go. How about homages? sweatdrop

my character change a lot through the years and many times have family or are rencarnated

Shin I really like your character and the one who was the main character of the story of your journal

Actually, I love the idea that my main character is not of noble birth, not an orphan, not from a tragic event but is completely normal and the only reason they are involved in the story is because they were out on an errand and got involved because they were doing the right thing. This forces them to be moral, good people with ordinary skills but forced to find fortitude and strength from within.

so the character is kind like the "tool" the average man/woman who get involve with the freaks and wierds of the story and is tagging alone feeling something alittle depress because maybe he/she is not the son/daugther of rich family, famous hero, wierd race

I have hard time writing normal or "tool" characters because they normally are just that normal, with nothing special and those remind the reader that we are not all born to rich, exentric or skillful families. And well blah I can't do it

I think the reason I prefer my main character like that is because I had an uncle who got me to read the lord of the rings (at 10 yrs old too) by telling me that it was a story about a gardener journeying to the end of the world at his friends side. Everything is about Frodo and the ring but lets face it, without Sam the journey would have been much shorter. And in the end it was Sam who was able to carry on with his life afterwards. As someone who has had far too many adventures of my own, I want to share that feeling that adventures happen to other people and someone normal has to go along with them to keep their humanity intact.

now that you bring that up Frodo and Sam have no special qualities aside from being "pure".

They are no good at magic (I don't think any habit is), they lack battle abilities, they are naither skillful healers or knowlege of the ancient arts. Those they qualafied for the "normal" characters.

I like the Byronic hero, which all my main characters are

Are they regular elves or are they dark or some other type?

Before you answer Malus, I think its only fair to warn you that Renton has a loathing for Tolkien-esque creations so you may need to spice up your species incarnations to impress him. mrgreen

@ Renton: The kind of character you refer to is actually more of a cypher, a device used to view the actions of greater events and people. Frodo was the CENTER of the conflict, but was still and ordinary person, so that description doesn't really apply.

Be careful when you use the 'tool' reference like I did reffering to Vaan from FFXII it has a negative conotation, which I intended. I didn't mean Vaan was a useful story device, I meant he was a slow witted dulllard who bugged the s**t out of me. mrgreen

They are brand new elves!
The dark and warlike Shadowed Elves
The Beast like Crimson Elves
The Pale Elves masters of the undead
And the Azure Elves, who are aquatic.

I like my world to VERY much my own. 3nodding
