Runya was enjoying her day alone, not wandering too far from her home but going far enough to escape all the familiar sounds and scents that hung around the area. She was sitting near a small water source, though she wasn’t near the water itself. Instead she was sitting under a tree, cleaning herself and wasting the day. She sighed, looking around.
It was a weird time of day. It was quiet, and she wondered where everyone was. Maybe out hunting, or home with their families, or doing something for the pride. All she knew was no one seemed to be around. And it was nice. She had a very difficult time talking to people, her words always coming out rude and her attitude never failing to be superior or condescending. She never put any thought into being better than others, it just seemed to happen.
On one paw she was glad for it, because she liked knowing who was capable of hanging out with her and who would just be wasting her time. Yet on the other paw she was lonely, and sometimes she met cubs she wanted to befriend, but failed to because her attitude drove them away. She wondered if there were people out there that might give her some sort of satisfaction, or if she was doomed to be alone, sitting atop her little high horse.
The easy solution, of course, would be for her to just lower her standards and try to be nice. But that… wasn’t going to happen.
Helios was bored. He had avoided his sister, he couldn't be bothered to fight her and his other sister and brother, well goodness knows where they were. He was quite happy to wander on his own as he seemed to learn more by himself then with anyone else, which was fine by him. However he found that chasing lizards got rather boring too and so he decided to have a bath, he liked to wash in the cool water, not only did it cool him down but he managed to remove the sand from his fur but only for a certain amount of time but sand free was nice while it last.
However he really didn't expect to see anyone there. It was the time of day that meant everyone was like doing something. So when he saw the female he was shocked. He really hadn't expected to see anyone today but he didn't mind that much. He was up for meeting other youngsters, especially when they were younger then him because it meant they were weaker.
"Hey." He spoke a greeting but mostly ignored her and walked into the water and started to roll around to try and get the sand off him. The water felt so wonderful.
Runya looked up when she heard a voice, having been spacing out and not aware of the older cub in the water nearby. She had just filtered out the sounds as the natural movement of the water, though that hardly made sense to her now. She blinked, arching an eyebrow at him and watching him roll in the water for a very moment before she even considered speaking back.
“Hello,” she offered simply, though she didn’t make it sound like much of a greeting. She stood, moving closer out of curiosity, tail flicking behind her as she moved her red frame to the edge of the water. She didn’t want to get splashed, she stayed back by a good margin. At least she could see him better now.
“What are you doing in that murky water?” she asked, her nose wrinkling, “others have probably used it for other things, you know. And now you’re rolling in it. But I guess it must be better than being dirty. You must have been desperately so, if you couldn’t be bothered to give yourself a bath.”
Yes, that was a very nice way to meet someone. Runya’s conscience could only shake it’s ethereal head in dismay.
Helios looked up when she spoke and laughed.
"You like the taste of sand then?" He thought sand was horrible especially when it got into your mouth because it tasted disgusting and not only did it taste horrible it never seemed to remove its self from your mouth so it was a constant taste of sand lurking in your mouth, its just disgusting.
He got out the water and shaked the water from his fur and growing mane. Yep he felt cleaner now. The sand was sticking to his wet paws more now but that he didn't mind too much because wet sand was more bearable then dry sand grains.
“Some of us know how to clean ourselves without making a meal out of it,” she said, shaking her head. She knew that sand had a taste to it, but she was getting used to compartmentalizing cleaning from things she tasted and remembered. It was just something that had to be done, regardless of if she liked it or not. She watched him come out of the water, taking a few steps back as he shook himself off.
She glared at him, getting sprinkles of the water on her coat and acting as if she had been soaked.
“How rude,” she said, huffing, “but at least you’re clean now, hm? Doesn’t matter if I was already clean and now I’ve got your dirty water in my fur. Thanks, I really appreciate that. Tch. Boys.” She shook her head. She didn’t have much experience with boys outside her family, but she had heard others referring to them with disdain so she felt justified in the comment. Besides, if they all acted like this they had to all be irritating, right?
Helios chuckled.
"Aw is the baby not liking the water." He smirked as he spoke in a really rather sarcastic tone. It seemed there weren't many females in this pride that weren't really rather dumb. How stupid. This pride wasn't going to last very long if all the females were complete and utter idiots now was it?
He didn't care though, he was happy to have found someone else to annoy for the time being at least.
Runya bristled.
“Baby?” she repeated, not liking the sound of the word. She stood her ground, watching him with an irritated expression on her face. She sniffed, indignant, and held her head up proudly, “I might be young, but at least I have intelligence on my side. You look like a goon that couldn’t find his way out of a bush.” She stuck her tongue out at him juvenilely, and would have crossed her arms over her chest if she had arms, and if that were an action befitting a lion.
Instead she turned her face away from him, nose in the air, “not like I care what you think, anyway. But for future reference, my name is Runya.”
Helios laughed, oh what a baby.
"Runya? No baby fits, I mean your acting like one!" He was be honest, she was acting like one. After all when you say things such as she was and making such petty arguments, well what is one to think other then that she is a baby and that is exactly how she is acting!
“Well, I’m okay with that. I am a baby, really. I’m still just a cub. At least I’m not acting like something I’m not,” she said, shrugging her shoulders. She grinned then, shaking her head, “I’m glad you didn’t try to defend yourself. It’s good to know just who I’m dealing with. A weak little cub that thinks he can find some fun in teasing a girl, a younger girl at that. What’s the matter, big guy, get picked on at home?”
She laughed and flicked her tail, grinning. She didn’t know why she was having fun, considering how annoyed she was, but she didn’t find herself inclined to leave. She watched him, curiously, wondering what his name was, but too proud to ask him about it.
“So you can call me baby if you like,” she said, “but I’m going to come up with a fitting name for you.”
"Pretending to be something your not? Oh please... thats what you are doing." He couldn't help but find her funny, who wouldn't? She was contradicting nearly everything that she said and that was enough for him to decide she was stupid.
"As for being picked on at home? I don't think so. The only sibling who has a chance of beating me is Anarore and well lets say she will soon know not to mess with me." He smirked.
"As for a name, my name is Helios." It was a fitting name for him, it's what he wanted to be. He wanted to be as good as his father and he saw his father as a god, so it worked well really.
“Helios? That’s…” She trailed off, biting her lower lip to stop herself from laughing. Ears perking forward, she grinned, “a sister, huh? That’s cool. I don’t think she has much to worry about.” She shook her head and shrugged her shoulders again, dismissively.
Eyeing him carefully, her ears perked forward, “so, Helios,” she giggled, “what gives you all this confidence, huh? Most of the lions I talk to just shut up when they should, but you don’t look like you know how to do that. So I guess I’ll just talk to you for a bit. I’m bored, anyway.”
Actually, she had another plan in mind, but she wanted to see if he was game for it. She hadn’t been challenged before, and now she was very interested in the idea of seeing if this cub was all he cracked himself up to be. She liked confidence and ego, but she also liked trying to injure pride. Or at least see if it was well deserved.
If she wished to injure his pride, she wouldn't have much luck for his ego and pride weren't for himself but for his father. Everything was just a fake mask to try and make his father proud of him. So if she wished to injure his pride or ego, well she would have a hard time doing so as he lacked both.
"I know how to be quiet, however I would need to actually want to be quiet and right now i really don't." He smiled at her and then yawned. He was somewhat bored. She was like boring. She was acting so silly but it was better then his sister right? His sister was just a pain. One day they would probably try and kill each other.
Runya nodded.
“I guess that’s a good point.” She said, being friendly. She looked around. What sort of trouble could they get into? She wanted to see what he was made of, but she couldn’t very well do that without a test or a game of some sort. Something fun, and something that she couldn’t get in trouble for. She wasn’t the fastest runner, though she was very clever and stronger than most female cubs her age. She wanted to do something she at least had a chance at being impressive in.
“Have you ever been on a hunt alone?” she asked offhandedly, tilting her head in his direction, as if talking to him were of second importance to the spacing out she had just been doing, “like ever bring anything down? Anything big?” There was a bit of a challenge there. She, of course, had never been out hunting and hadn’t really thought about it before.
Helios looked at as if she were crazy.
"Are you now suicidal?" Of course he had hunted lizards several times and caught them and he had caught a rabbit once but he was sure it was a fluke, he had never been able to do it since. Anything bigger? Most of the bigger prey could kill them at the size they were. Sure he had been a pain about it several times as he liked to run towards a herd and mess up a hunt but he made sure to then get well out of the way again. He liked his life.
“Oh ho ho!” Runya laughed, brightening at his reaction. She tiled her head, grinning broadly as she watched him, her expression nothing short of challenging, “Suicidal, huh? I didn’t think it was that scary an idea. But if you’re worried, I guess I won’t ask you to come with me. It’s not like I’m saying we should go kill something giant. Don’t pee yourself.”
She looked around again. What could they find to hunt, anyway? There was very little movement around, and she imagined she would have to go away from her den to find something worth chasing. She wasn’t thinking an adult animal of any sort, but if she they could test their skills on something worthy, something fun, she’d be content.
“But don’t worry,” she said, turning back to him and sighing, “you can just play in the water some more, if that’s more your speed.”
"Oh no I would love to see this." He chuckled.
"What are you classing as big prey anyway?" He was curious, she was small so a baby anything would probably be big too her. Oh the poor baby, she couldn't help being so small now could she?
This would however be amusing.
Runya frowned. From her den she didn’t usually see what prey her parents hunted, and she so far had very little experience with recognizing one species from the next. So the question was a bit difficult for her. Shrugging, she sighed and cleared her throat.
“I don’t know,” she said, a bit sarcastically, “anything bigger than us, I suppose. That seems to make sense. I don’t want this to turn into a game of ‘run away from the giant thing we shouldn’t have messed with’ though. So don’t be dumb about what you chase. Come on, I bet if we go look we’ll be able to find something.”
She moved by him, her tail swatting him almost playfully, though much more challengingly, as she went. “Think there’s anything this way?”
Helios stopped himself laughing this time. She hadn't a clue what she was doing did she? He found that fact amusing enough. Helios wasn't the best behaved youngster and always followed his mother when she went hunting so he knew what they hunted.
"Excuse me? I believe you were the one who wanted to go hunt something big. I am just coming to watch when you get like killed. I mean you clearly don't know anything about hunting." He smirked a little. He was more then happy to kick up a fuss but he wasn't sure how much trouble you could get in for playing with the herds, they were hard enough to find around here anywhere.
“Whatever you say, tough guy.” Runya said with a pleasant smile. She rolled her eyes as she turned her head, trotting toward the source of the water they had been situated around. It was actually just run off from a large watering hole nearby, where prey beasts liked to gather to cool themselves and… be social. There was a few herds around, and though she couldn’t recognize any of the species by name, she knew they were food.
It was easy enough for the cubs to get close, the wind in their favor and their small bodies not drawing much attention, despite how stark their red coloring was against the sand. She looked at him when she spotted something she thought they could try and catch. There were some babies, or what she assumed were babies, sitting together by the watering hole. Their parents must have gone off for something, because there didn’t seem to be any near by. They would at least have time to run in, stir up trouble and run out before getting trampled by some angry adult.
“Look over there,” she said, indicating with her head, “do you think you could get one of those? I bet I could.” She didn’t think that at all, but the words came out of her mouth confidently so she could hardly call them back now.
He followed her watching the herds while he went. It seemed however there wasn't going to be anything interesting. Then she asked him to catch on the babies because she could. Well she could be his guest. He wasn't stupid, they had really angry mothers by them!
"You think you can, go ahead. You catch one and prove how amazing you are. Then I will. Unless your too scared to." He smirked. He knew she wouldn't catch one, the herd looked strong and the mother, well the mothers were close to their children, really close. His mother had told him about mothers being protective of their young. Yes he wasn't stupid enough to run out there and get himself killed.
“All muscle and no brain,” Runya whistled softly, shaking her head and clicking her tongue behind her teeth in a show of sharp disappointment. She then flashed a toothy grin and crawled quickly away from him, her little body sliding effortlessly over the sand and quickly getting lost in the shifting levels of the hills. Soon enough she was almost too close to the group of babies, eyes focusing on one.
She looked like she was about to chase one, but then she seemed to lose interest or get distracted. She moved into the oasis-like area around the water, the strangled trees and underbrush providing good cover for whatever it was she was planning. She emerged a few minutes later, certainly taking her time. She then did a wide circle, so as not to be seen, around the babies and positioned herself once again in the same spot as before, muscles coiled to attack.
Frowning, she decided to come back to Helios and tell him her plan… just in case it went wrong.
“So,” she said in a low voice, “I don’t care if we catch it or eat it, I just want to see if we, or I, since you’re so scared, can take one down. I set up a trap, since neither of us are big enough. Do you want to help, or should I just do it myself?”

Helios was amused and sceeptical. Everything she said, well she seemed so determined but yet to be fair this was pretty pointless, they could get killed but yet Helios never turned down a challenge, he didn't have it in him to and well she was now his challenge.
"Come on then. Lets do it. Your on."
He smirked. He knew this was stupid but he wasn't going to let a girl beat him at something. His sister was the only one nearly as good as him but yet this one.... he wondered.

Runya grinned triumphantly, looking ferocious in her eagerness to play this stupid, dangerous game they had some how created. She laughed and nodded, her fur bristling.
"Good! I thought you were going to chicken out, but I'm almost glad you didn't. Since now I get to see what kind of a lion you really are!" She began to move toward the position she had taken before, back behind the babies, making sure he was following, "we'll just sneak up on them and chase them into that bush I went into. One should get trapped! It'll be cool, and we can tell our siblings that we caught one."
She was excited. The idea of having some bragging rights was exhilarating. Crouching, she watched him carefully for a long time, not knowing if she or he would make the first move. She was nervous, frozen in place, watching the pray she knew she wanted to chase but her paws refused to move for her.
"Should we... go at the same time?" she asked, trying not to sound nervous.

Helios listened to her talk about bragging rights and things and just laughed. She did know that she wasn't going to catch one didn't she? He then watched her get into position but the best bit, the bit that made him fall over laughing was the last question she asked.
"Have you never watched a hunt?"
He had to ask because well the lionesses tended to go after something one at a time, circling their prey and then one of them would go in for the kill but she obviously didn't understand or see this. He didn't get how hard it was to understand.

She squinted at him. Of course she had watched hunts! Just... perhaps not as closely as she needed to... whatever, she was sure they could do it. She could do it. It didn't matter if he laughed at her now. Once she proved herself with this game and trap then she would know that everything he said about her wasn't true. She was just as good as he was. Maybe better!
Yeah. She just wasn't as exposed to hunting, obviously. That wasn't her fault.
Feeling justified, and slightly brave, despite the fact that she was just talking herself into doing it, she turned away from him.
"Fine, you just sit there and shiver, then. I'll go play!" And she ran off, scaring a baby to its feet and chasing it directly into the brush. Neither it or she emerged for a little while.

Helios just laughed, then he followed her. He also watched the mother of the baby she chased storm towards her. Well it was her funeral but he had no problem in watching. Prey wasn't scared of some cub and he had been told by his mother that mothers will always protect their children. This would be amusing there was no doubt about that.
He walked towards her, a smirk on his face. If she had caught it without her head being smashed in that he would be surprised. He was gong to be careful though he wasn't about to get in the way of the mother and so he slowly circled round the bush that the three had all dissappeared into and just waited.
"You been killed yet?" He called out, a smirk still on his face.

"I don't think so," Runya replied honestly.
She peeked her head out of the bush, blinking at Helios. Her trap had pretty much spared her a death-by-trampling, catching the mother rather than the relatively harmless baby. The cub had hidden in a thick, thorny bush until she was certain the mother wasn't going to be able to escape, then picked her way out. A bit scuffed and scruffy, but not permanently damage, Runya emerged considering this a success.
She grinned at him, shakily, not sure if she had won or proven anything at all. She was mostly just glad she hadn't been stomped on.
"At least the trap worked!"

Helios was amused though somewhat glad that she had managed to make it out alive.
"You probably shouldn't do that too often. I don't want to have to come in and save you next time." He smirked. He liked this girl she had something that some of the other youngsters didn't. She had guts.
"However, maybe next time you can try to prove how tough you are without nearly getting yourself killed." He chuckled a little and walked towards her, wondering if she was actually alright.

"Like you would," Runya huffed when he said he didn't want to come in and save her next time. She shook her head, feeling a bit light headed. Maybe it was from the adrenaline or the fear, or a mixture of both, but she felt queasy.
Sitting down, trying not to tremble, she nodded furiously at his suggestion.
"Yeah, I think we could come up with different ways of proving I'm better than you," she said with a forced, little laugh. Still, she couldn't help but puff out her chest and grin a bit, eyes flashing. Even if it had been a bit of a wild ride, she had gotten out of it relatively unscathed.
"I think we should... go back," she said, a new wave of wooziness washing over her.

Helios wouldn't admit but yes he would have helped her. She was part of the pride and that meant he would protect her if he could. That and what use was she dead? She was far too amusing to allow her to die!
"Yeah, like you could prove that." He laughed and then looked at her curiously.
"Are you okay?" He wasn't quite sure what was wrong with her but she didn't seem quite right and it worried him somewhat.
"Yeah lets go back, you sure you will be able to walk okay?" The worry was more obvious in his voice then he might like but he liked this girl. She was a challenge, someone who he could have fun with.

Runya sighed. She was just a bit overexcited, the rush of adrenaline leaving her light headed now that the thrill had passed. She would never admit to it, but she was also a bit shocked from how scared she had been, though she wasn't about to bring that up in conversation. It hadn't even entered into her head, though the feeling of fear remained.
"I'm fine," she said, huffing indignantly, like he had some nerve even to ask. Of course she was fine! She was Runya, after all. When was she not fine? She wobbled, trying not to look too unsure. Pausing, she made sure her feet were under before looking up at him, nodding confidently.
"I can walk, sure, no problem. I think the rush is just... a bit much. No wonder some of the adults like hunting so much." She took a few steps forward, watching her paws carefully before looking at him, "but thanks for asking..." she said, lowering her eyes and feeling sheepish. She did appreciate it, thinking that he very may well have jumped in there if she had needed it.
It was comforting, and helped steady her feet.

He chuckled a little and then just nodded.
"If you say so!" He smirked somewhat, she really did amuse him.
"Are you sure you can walk properly girl?" He stayed behind her, watching her swaying as she walked. He found that it would be good teasing material for the whole way back to the dens.
"Would you like me to make sure you dont fall over in front of your dad?" He smirked some more not knowing whether Runya was anything like her sister, that's if they were sisters. He was doing some guess work here. Though iff they were siblings he found Runya much more interesting then that other one. She was just wimpish.

"I'm sure, Boy," she quipped back, playfully. She cantered to prove it to him, flicking her tail high and tilting her head up high. Of course, this confidence did nothing to dissuade his teasing and she had to keep up her defenses. She found herself laughing, though, which was more than she thought she would do.
She squinted at him when he offered to help her in front of he dad.
"I'm sure I've got it handled," she said haughtily, not looking too ruffled. She grinned at him, ears tilted slightly back, "I walked all the way here, didn't I? Anyway... I guess today was fun, or whatever, so if you ever wanted to hang out and do some other competition... you know, I wouldn't say no.
She scoffed, then smiled genuinely, and nodded her head, saying goodbye. She could make it home from here. Padding off, she stopped to look back at him, looking like she was going to say something, but then just shaking her head.

Helios without a doubt found Runya much more interesting then his sister and he couldn't help but smirk when she said she had enjoyed the day. He had as well but had too much pride to actually admit that fact. He would train some more, for he would make sure she realised that he was better then her next time.
He watched her go and as she turned became slightly confused but then she went off again.
"Untill next time..." He smirked and turned to head home. He felt like fighting with his brother again.
