does nebody have a accurate definition of what a vampires powers are supposed to be? cause u see, i watch hellsing and alucard has tht whole dog thing going for him, but b4 this i had never heard of vampires being connected with dogs in anyway, let alone the physical way. if u couldnt tell, im a big fan of vampire lore and i just wanted to see what some ppl believe r the true powers of vampires. ive met some ppl who say tht some vampires dont even have the super-human strength or speed ablities so no opinion u put up here can really be wrong or sound stupid. i mean they r mythical creatures after all, so share in the myth

The beast that comes out of Alucard is a Hellhound, a demon. This is, according to the translations, one of Alucard's familiars (Servants, either undead; living, but bent to his will; or demonic). Familiars are also in Dracula, and 'Blade'.
The thing that even I wonder at, is the fact that Seras in the manga doesn't drink for quite some time, however she does not become weak, nor does she age. In the book, Dracula could survive without drinking blood, but he would physically age (A state that could be reversed with a drink or seven).
Something you might find interesting: The sun was not lethal to vampires until the silent film, 'Nosferatu'. Before that, all that happened, was that vampires were mortal in weakness, and were unable to shape-shift.
Question: have you ever heard of a vampire with curly hair and brown eyes? I mean, they always seem to have pale blue, and straight. I want to know where this originated, seeing as Vlad Tepes (Dracula, and Alucard(?)) had brown eyes and hair of the curl. Then again, he is the most famous vampire, not the first. But come to think of it, I think he is the only one I can thin of that fits my description. Lestat comes in 2nd with half.
but I digress,
Here is what I believe to be Vampiric powers are but not limited to: Mental abilities (Telekenisis, telepathy, mind control, etc.) Superhuman physical attributes (Strength, speed, sight, smeel etc.) shape shifting (wolves, bats, fog) teleportation (Self explanitory) cloaking (in myst or fog) Summoning of Familiars (For the older, and stronger ones) Regeneration (Self explanitory) -and, of course- spreading vampirism

Wow, very good post, DarthAlucard. I totally agree. Oh, in Dracula, vampires can also move through walls (or, more technically, through joints, even if they're sealed joints). I might have missed that in your list, though.

Also, I think that can be covered under teleportation.

i actually believe alucard has red eyes and for tht matter, tht alot of the vampires in Hellsing have red eyes as well. as for teleportation, tht includes the ability to sink into and come out of the shadows right? cause alucard does tht a bit when visiting Integra in or office or something to tht effect.

And as far as definate vampiric powers, there is no definate definition, given vampiric powers change from story to story, one of the things that greatly irks me as a RPer... but anyway, the rules change so often it is hard to keep track of what strengths and weaknessed vampires have and well.. I mean come on, a way to kill a vampire is to steal his/her sock, fill it with soil and throw it into a river. The vampire will wake, miss his/her sock and jump into the river to retreave his/her sock and drown. The rules are not definate.

And you also have to ask what kind of vampire; There is more then one kind. In jamaca, they are old women who shed their skin and become giant balls of fire. As far as Hellsing is concerned, we are dealing with the central-eastern Europe species, so, this limits the information one much sift through. And what you, Miss Neko are forgetting, is the vampires of the Hellsing universe are the vampires of Bram Stoker's universe in 'Draclua', therefore we can use his list of "do's and dont's" of vampires as absolute canon. So there.

And as far as priding oneself on his or her knowledge of vampires, I am another ::hugs her vampire encyclopedia:: DId you know that pumpkins and mellos become vampires if they are kept for more than 10 days after christmas? It's true, they roll around making growling noises and pester the living, although they are not very dangerous because they lack teeth.

And thank the gods Pumpkins don't have teeth. Can you imagine being turned into a vampire, and your sire is a pumpkin? I couldn't unlive with myself (get it, get it? Yeah, I know it sucks). My friend also has the Encyclapedia; great read in a Catholic HS ^^ Oh, and as far as silver, it is implied because it is a "holy" metal (Catholic thing).

eek Wow, I learned a lot from reading the earlier posts.
I was just coming in here to comment that I know that the definition varies from story to story. Vampires have become very popular to write about, and everyone wants to make their version unique in some way and some authors do that by "tweaking" their view of vampires.

Yes, Alucard can turn into mist. Also, silver has excellent conductivity.
