She had skipped school for this, she had even dragged Austin into skipping as well, but Austin had walked off hours ago, growing bored with Polly's latest obsession. Well she didn't care. She was going to find the witch that cursed her whether he was there or not.
Which was why she was strolling through Durem, peeking into every dark and scary looking alley that she could find. She had ran into five cats and a dog so far, but no witch.
It was getting frustrating. She kicked a can in the latest alley, watching as it hit the wall and bounced off in a random direction. The witch had to be SOMEWHERE, didn't she? Polly had some revenge to get, dammit!

School was out and Orli was on her way home. Her first day in the upper grades, as opposed to pre-school, had been enjoyable, although she did have some catching up to do and consequentially her backpack was on the heavy side. But then again, anything was heavy when you were three and a half feet tall.
Being older certainly had its merits. She finally enjoyed the same degree of freedom that her mother afforded her siblings, such as being able to go to and from school independently and being allowed to wander Durem on her own. The city had never seemed so big before! It was almost too big. Orli needed a shortcut.
She paused at the entrance to an alleyway that she suspected would take her closer to her street and sized it up. Dark didn't worry her - she could light it up - but what if there was someone bad in that dark? She thought she could hear someone in there.

Polly went still as a silhouette appeared at the end of the alley. Was it the witch? It looked to have a humped back, like witches did--
"So you finally returned," she snarled. "I've been looking for you, witch!" she added, racing forward with a fist at her side.

"I'm not a witch!" yelled Orli, and leapt out of the way as a figure ran towards her out of the gloom. The weight of her backpack now off balance, she tumbled to the ground.
After getting back up and dusting herself off, she looked accusatorially at her assaulter for a moment before recognizing her. "Polly!" she exclaimed. "That's not a very good way to greet a friend."

Polly blinked, then sighed. "Oh, sorry," she muttered, obviously pouting. "That stupid witch's been avoiding me all day!" she complained, her mind still on the subject at hand. Then she realized something. "Orli! You grew! Cool!"
Then her mind went straight back to the witch and a thoughtful expression crossed her face. "You busy?"

"Busy?" asked Orli. It was an alien term. "No," she said. "I mean, I've got homework, but I'm not busy." She smiled at Polly. It was good to be able to see eye to eye with her friend again. Well, figuratively, at least. Orli was the smallest kid in her class.
"You're looking for... a witch?" she asked. Ranza knew far more about witches than Orli did - Ranza even knew a real witch - but Orli supposed she could help. "Cool," she said. "Can I join you?"

"Sure!" Polly said, latching onto Orli's arm. "All you gotta do is look gullible," she added shamelessly before heading for the street. "Then she'll call you over and give you a line of crap about something or other, and I'll beat her for cursing me!"
It was all the witch's fault she hadn't gotten that treasure, after all. It was payback time!

"Cursed you?" asked Orli, wondering how one went about looking gullible. She was not about to put on a retard face. Still, it sounded like far more of an adventure than she had ever had. And what better way to have her first adventure than with her best friend?
"Alright," she said. "What does gullible look like?" she asked as she followed Polly back out onto the sidewalk.

"Like you don't wanna hit her," Polly answered promptly. "She's this nasty old crone who plays with these cards on a blanket, then disappears when your back is turned. She's ugllyyyyy, too. Like so ugly you feel like throwing up, and she's got--"
To be honest, she didn't really remember what the witch looked like, but that didn't stop her from describing her!

Orli could do non-violent. She followed Polly and laughed at her descriptions. It sounded almost like a witch out of a movie. Witches in movies were usually kind of evil. Like in Stardust, which technically she shouldn't have watched but Nahuel and Ranza had watched it and Orli had just happened to have been in the room and...
Okay. That was not a good thing to think about, because now she was scared.
"Witches don't really cut out hearts, right?" she asked.

"Dunno," Polly admitted. "She's the first one I've met." But she planned on getting another meeting in soon. "She can't be scarier than a shark, though, so I can handle her!"
She couldn't handle the shark, so where she got the guts to brag about handling the witch, no one knew.

"Okay," said Orli, who at this point would have followed Polly to the ends of the earth, because Polly clearly knew more about this subject than she did.
"Let's go look for her," she said. If she wasn't scarier than a shark, she wouldn't even think about trying to cut out Orli's heart, right?
Orli didn't even know if star hearts worked like they did in the movies. Movies were just movies, right? Then again, Indiana Jones was just a movie, and Nah swore up and down that Indiana Jones was also his boss...

"Fortunes, fortunes, get your fortunes here!" someone called from ahead of them. Polly jerked into en pointe, and had she been a dog one leg would have been brought up to point the way. As it was she turned, giving Orli a deviously huge smile before tugging her in the direction of the voice.
"Fortunes, fortunes! Get your fortunes here!" the old woman sitting on the blanket said. "Gifts and lucky charms for sale. Luck is never a bad thing to have!"

Orli followed Polly towards the Witch, who was something of a curiosity. She didn't look exactly as Polly had said she would, but she didn't look like the kind of witches who cut out Star's hearts and ate them, either, which was a relief to Orli.
She looked to Polly for instructions on what to do next. This was, after all, her idea.

The old woman looked at them, a little smile playing at her thin lips as she noticed Polly. She didn't look like she had last time... or did she? She was the type of person whose personality outweighed her body by far. They would remember what she said long after they forgot what she looked like.
"You still haven't resolved your problem, little phoenix girl," she said in a dry, raspy voice. "Did you find your treasure?"
"I want my good luck back, old witch!" Polly demanded, since the ruse was completely blown.
Rather than reply to that, the witch turned, looking at Orli. "Would you like your fortune told, little star?"
