He was angry. An emotion that Kidondo didn't often experience. He had felt it more as a youth, watching his pride struggle on, hoping for a saviour in the form of their Goddess. A Goddess who, in the end, had forsaken them.
Grimacing as he remembered Ny's words in the back of his mind, he wondered whether he had been wrong in leaving her like that. Maybe he should have been stronger, maybe he should have punished her for speaking out of terms. But no, Kidondo was not his father. The female was angry and lashing out because of Ripuka's death. Once she had come to terms with it, she would calm and she would understand. At least, he hoped so.
In any case, he was intending to do some guard duty today. Ripuka's death on the borders had rattled him a little and he wanted to help Uuo and the others as much as possible. So, as he'd not much on today, he'd decided that this was what he would do.
Pressing onwards, letting the sand soften the sound of his paws, he looked up and let his eyes move to the direction where he'd last seen the traditionalists go.
He remembered seeing Ripuka's orange-red form fading away. Remembered hoping that she would come to understand him someday. And she had, but too late.
He paused and sat, pondering on the female he had once thought of as mother and wondering whether he should allow himself to grieve a little more for her loss instead of pushing it away inside.

Azar giggle quietly as she started to wander away from the rest of the family. She really didn't like sneaking away. She really didn't at all. But with Fia and Ea pulling one of their 'lets confuse mama and go in different directions' thing Azar found her perfect chance.
She wanted to spend more time with her father. She was still very much attached to her father. She very much was, however he had been very busy. Not really able to spend that much time with her. She didn't understand why and it bothered her. So now she knew what she wanted to do. Hunt down daddy!
With a determined face she sat up on a dune trying to spot a red figure that she knew. Her face serious for the moment until she spotted him, then a large smile grew on her face. "Daddy!" She squealed, loud enough for him to hear, before she lost her footing ending up sliding down the dune. But she was quickly on her paws, giggling once more and running toward him. "Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" She was giggling more as she ran toward him and soon she was next to him, rubbing against his legs and looking up at him with big cubbish gold eyes.
"I found you daddy." She beamed proud of herself, puffing out her chest as she looked up at him.

He was jerked from these somber thoughts by the voice of his daughter calling him. He knew who it was before he'd even turned to spot her, and felt his heart warm a little at the dark pelt, emblazoned with wings.
Little Azar.
He turned to greet her, smiling wider as she slipped down a dune in her excitement to reach him and then they were together and she rubbing against his legs. Purring, he dipped his head to nuzzle her ears. "So you did, little one. You'll be quite a tracker when you grow up!" He lowered himself slightly so he was closer to her level and smiled warmly.
"Why aren't you with your mother, dear one?"

Azar giggled softly as her father nuzzled her. She purred loudly as she nipped at his ears, puffing out her chest proud of herself. She loved it when her father complimented her, even if it was the littlest thing. She sat back on her haunches giggling softly, putting her paws on his chest grinning proudly.
"Thank you daddy." She nodded before thinking about the answer to his question. She was wondering what her father would say to her sneaking away. She normally wasn't one to sneak away. She didn't want her dad to get mad at her.
"Well... Ea and Fia were distracting mommy and I wanted to spend time with you so..." She looked up at him with a soft smile, hoping that he wouldn't get mad at her. "You haven't been around much and I wanted to play with you! She giggled a bit, nipping at his nose. "And well if you are busy I can help." She puffed out her chest again. "I can help." She nodded proudly. She loved the idea of being able to help her father out around the pride.

He chuckled good-naturedly, feeling the previous heat of anger and irritation leave him in a matter of seconds. Being around his family helped ease the strains of his everyday duties and responsibilities. When he was with them he could forget he was Regent and just be himself. Lose himself in the moment of parenthood.
He blinked down at her as she pressed her paws to his chest and bobbed his nose slightly. "Those twins." He chuckled. "Your poor mother is going to have circles run around her. But, since you're here, I suppose you might as well help me." He reached down to give her another lick on the face.
"So, Azar, are you ready to travel to the borders? I was going to do some guard duty to calm my head, so you may as well tag along to know which bit of sand is ours and which isn't." He gave ger a playful nudge.

Azar giggled at her father she smiled softly then nuzzled her father's leg. "Well daddy I try my hardest to behave myself so mommy doesn't have to chase after me." She grinned and then sat up some. She wormed around where she was standing before nipping at him.
She purred as her father licked her face, she squealed out of excitement before she looked up at him with big eyes. "Really daddy!?" She stood up and puffed out her chest with a grin on her face. She could barely hold still at the idea of going out with her father.
"Of course I am Daddy!" She grinned as she started to weave in between his front legs, nipping at them and licking the back of his ankles. "I'll learn fast and make you proud!"
It took her a moment before she calmed herself, settling between his paws, standing up with her head held up high and her chest puffed out. "Lead the way daddy." She looked up at him with a smile before a determined and serious look slowly grew on her face as she looked forward at the lands in front of her. If anything this was something that she had been looking forward too. Spending time with her father and leaning on top of that! It was her two favorite things.
Maybe she could show off how much she was learning? Maybe he would want to start spending more time with her. Oh she would love to have that! It would be one thing that she would be looking forward to for sure. At the idea of spending more time with her beloved father she was even more motivated to make him proud.
The little cub was a daddys girl for sure.

He smiled. His daughter was a real sweetheart. He didn't think he could ever be angry at her. She was a pleasant child, always willing to please and do her utmost best. Yes, Azar was certainly a child to be proud of. Not that he wasn't proud of the twins. They were just far too smart for their own good sometimes.
"I don't doubt it, Azar. I'm already very proud of you." He gave her a soft nudge and then set off towards the borders. Might as well start getting the little ones used to the lay of the land. It was better to educae them sooner rather than later.
"We'll have to be on full alert once we get there." He explained. "There are many dangers outside of the pride, especially for a cub. Once you are fully grown not many rogues will be able to intimidate you but we must always be careful. A lone rogue is nothing to worry about, but sometimes they travel in groups and that's when it becomes dangerous. Firekin are strong, but one against many is never good odds. For now, if you wish to go to the borders, always make sure an adult goes with you."
He smiled. "Have you chosen an apprenticeship, love?" He was secretly hopng she hadn't chosen to become a guard. It was a dangerous job.

Azar grinned up at him with a grin, her father approving her always made her feel good. Made her feel a lot better. She looked up to her father so much that just the little amount of approving that he did when he did made her feel so proud of herself.
She puffed out her chest as she wandered next to him, making herself look as big as she could. She would do good scaring off a mouse! That idea made her almost giggle but she tried to make herself seem as focused as she could So as she trotted next to her father she kept her attention to what was around her she looked around.
"Full alert." She repeated with a nod, her ears perking up some and she looked around her once more, even down at her paws before she looked up again. "Groups bad." She repeated again after her father, taking in a much as she could that he was saying. "Adults." She nodded again and grinned at him, taking notes in the back of her mind of what he was teaching her.
Then his question made her think she looked up at him then shrugged before puffing out her chest again. "I want to be a warrior." She stated proudly, with a nod and even a small pick up of her trot. "I want to be able to fight along side the others and protect the pride." She flicked her tail behind her and then tried to make herself look even bigger but it made her slow down so she stopped and trotted up to her father again. "Whadda think daddy?" She looked up at him with a small trip over her paws.

He smiled lovingly down at her, noting how she was paying attention, repeating those important little words. What a dear child. He slowed his pace a little, shaking the dusting of sand from his fur and glanced off in the direction he had been going before he'd bumped into his little one.
"A warrior, huh?" He pondered on this a moment, glad she hadn't chosen to become a guard. He wished he didn't worry about his children so. But even knowing they would grow up to become big, strong Firekin, he couldn't help but want to protect them and keep them safe. "I think you'll become a great warrior, Azar. You're growing almost everyday and you're keen to learn. Yes, I think you'll do very well indeed." He wondered who would choose to have his little daugher as their apprentice.
"So long as you're happy, love, I don't mind which path you choose. Choose what's right for you and that's all that really matters. If a soldier's life is the one for you, I'll be right behind you. It's a good thing - to protect your pride."

Azar almost didn't notice her father slowing his pace. Really didn't notice at all until she realized that she was a few steps in front of him. She slowed down and found herself trotting along with him between his front paws a grin growing steadily on her face.
"Yup!" She wormed around for a moment. She wanted to make everyone especially her dad proud of her... And she loved to play fight. She didn't see why she couldn't do it. She was really looking forward to it. She couldn't wait to start learning more. "I really wish that would could teach me daddy." She grinned up at him before looking around peaking behind the legs that she was now standing between.
"What are we going to do now daddy?" She asked as she looked around she wasn't sure if they were at the borders yet but she knew that they were heading that way. But where were they? Where ever they were she was going to learn where and she was determined to remember them too.

He smiled lovingly down at her. She really was very energetic and playful and she had that twinkle that No had. That stubborn streak in her eye - that desire to be the best that she could be. Yes, she'd do fine, he was sure of that. "I'm no warrior, but there's certainly many others here with incredible fighting skills. You'll certainly get one of the best, I'm sure."
At her question he chuckled lightly. "Just a little further. I'm going to take you around the southern border, just to show you markers." He slowed again and then came to a halt and pointed his nose. "See that great rock there? The one sticking out of the mud. That's one of the markers. This side of the rock is our land. On the otherside is free land, though we certainly would act defensively if someone was hanging around close by. You'll notice similar markers all around the edge, and where there isn't a marker, pride lions will leave their scent, so you'll know if you get close to leaving or entering the pride's territory."

Azar giggled at her father she puffed out her chest some before looking up at her father. "Daddy, I'm sure that you are a great warrior!" She rocked back and forth on her paws before looking forward, keeping up her trot with his stride. It was hard to keep up with adults some times especially her dad but she was getting used to it.
"Really?" She said as he pointed out that they were getting closer she looked around excited to see the borders. But then he stopped, it took her a moment to realize that he did but when she realized it she quickly backed up and settled between his paws once more. She looked out at the lands and then looked out beyond them. "Do we have a lot of land daddy?" She asked looking around. To her she really hadn't been out that much, this was really the furthest she has been away from the den. Everything was so new and exciting. Everything new, she loved the idea of getting around and learning everything.

He chuckled. "As far as being a warrior is concerned, I'm strictly average. The General, Azarax, beat me in a sparring match and proved his worth. No, I can fight if I must, but I'd prefer to leave that craft to the Firekin who are more inclined. I prefer to use my head over my claws. My mind is faster than my strike." He grinned. "That's why I was an oddity as a young one. But don't let that discourage you. Firekin have the blood of warriors in them. All of us should learn the basics of fighting and those that fight well are looked highly upon." He purred deep in his chest and nodded.
"We have a large expanse of land." He replied. "And as our numbers grow, so will our territory. You'll find out sooner or later that whilst lions thrive in groups they also need a little solitude to keep their tempers from fraying too high."
His tail curled contentedly. "The lands haven't held so many Firekin in a long, long time. We are growing bigger and stronger and that is why we need soldiers. Strong soldiers. As we grow other prides may become afraid and attack. If that happens we need talented Firekin to group together and work to fight off any intruders."

Azar looked up at her father then grinned ear to ear. "I believe it daddy, you're the smartest lion in the world." Wit that she rubbed against her father's leg, her own purr starting to rumble out of her small chest. "I mean you got your whole pride!" She giggled before nipping her father's ankle before looking around. "But I wish you could be around more, I love spending time with you daddy." She looked up with wide eyes for a moment, she daddy's girl for sure.
"Really? So we are going to have more lands?" Her eyes grew wide at the idea. A smile spreading on her face as she looked around, she loved these lands. She liked that idea, more room to run around and learn about! She purred a little more loud before she leaned against her father's leg. A question forming in her mind before she looked up. "I heard from a bigger lion that there are more Firekin out there... Why aren't they here? Why did the lion say they are bad?" She asked looking up at her father with a curious look on her face, she had heard it from a few of the other lions but when she spoke about it the all hushed her or insisted it was a 'grown up thing.' Which always made her more and more curious about it.

He smiled. His daughter was such a little sweetheart! He lowered his head and nudged her fondly between the ears. "You and your brothers and sisters are the most important things to me, Azar. Always remember that, even if your mother and I do seem busy with other things, you're never from our thoughts." He wished he had more time to spend with his children and felt a little guilty that he didn't. However, it was the same with other lions; Soldiers who had training, guards with their rotas.
Yes, everyone was busy.
"As you get older you'll start getting busy, too. Just you wait and see. You'll be training and working and you'll make lots of new friends." He smiled. "And as you grow, you'll see the pride grow too. So, yes, the more lions we have the bigger the land will be."
He paused and glanced at her. "You heard correctly." He replied, looking out across the land. "There was a battle and those who did not wish to change traditions fled the lands. I do not know where they live, except that they have not left the desert, that they linger on out there. They want revenge on us and would steal our lands if we let them. But they are few in number and waning in strength. However, they can still do harm and that is why no one should leave the borders alone. They lie in wait, hoping to catch us unawares. That is why the Guards are so important."
