According to Wikipedia, the fedora hat was originally a female fashion in the late 1800's before being adopted by men after the turn of the century. Of course, it also points out the hat's anachronistic popularity in cowboy movies. The hat is usually associated with the '20s and '30s, but I personally don't think it would look out of place with a steampunk style.

I do say fedora hats are just fine in steampunk times, anachronistic or otherwise. I myself love fedoras and I wear one regularly (although it's a plain one, nothing steampunk about it). It goes great with my plaid shorts. wink
Actually, I'm planning to get a nice stiff red felt fedora off of Amazon, and a nice big fake white feather to stick on one side -- and voila~ red mage hat! Not really steampunk either... but oh well!

While steampunk is Victorian heavy I personally see it as ranging from the late 1800's into the 1920's Neovictorian is the strictly Victorian aspect in my book.
After all steam sciences were still used in the 20's and prohibition era fashion is just yummy.

as long as you can make it fit. the fedora didn't show up until about the 1920's but it can work.

I love Fedoras personally. The way I see it just like any other fashion Steam Punk seems to be a pretty loose based style, as long as there is some type of theme involved. I see nothing wrong with adding it to your style, because lets face it, it's your style, dress how you want to if you think it works for you. smile
