Duranjaya had grown farther and farther away from himself, and left the Indian woman Wachiwi to fend for herself while he ventured out into the unknown. Time had passed and for that time, Duran grew wiser in the way of the world and it's ways. Things were not always as they seemed, and suspicion grew to become second nature to Duranjaya when it came to those who seemed well fit to do him harm. He wasn't jaded enough to be suspicious of all, though, and hardly willing to go out of his way to avoid other Soquili. In fact, his solitude might contribute to that suspicion. He hardly met Soquili in his travels, only other creatures that harmed for sport.

Coming back to the lands that he called home for so long was odd. Things had changed, no doubt, in his absence. It wasn't like being home, it was simply like returning to a long forgotten place. He wasn't sure if he should be pleased with this development or heartbroken that he seemed to've doomed himself to be an eternal wanderer. Thoughts like those, though, were for another time. Duranjaya's stomach rumbled in hunger, and needed to be sated. He stepped through the forest that he'd called home, until he came upon a clearing entirely by chance. The grass seemed pleasant there, so he stepped further into the clearing and bowed his head to eat, ears erect and twitching towards any little sound they picked up.

As luck would have it, Wildfire was napping.

Too often, these days, she found that her mornings began amid a flurry of hooves and the flutter of wings as her direct and indirect relatives either set about their morning tasks... or set about each other in their typical warlike fashion. At first the young chestnut mare hadn't taken to the ruckus, afterall, why did SHE had to rouse herself to move out of THEIR way?

Well, her sister Seresai taught her to skedaddle rather quickly one morning when her bout with Blais sent the pair of them tumbling right into the barely dozing Wildfire. Since then, Wile' had adopted the practice of rising REALLY early and locating a quieter place to finish her morning snooze. Naturally, she changed the location every couple of days lest Seres or Killian decide to bring the party too her.

In any case, this morning she was a little lower then was usual. She had tried to stay within the herd boundaries, but in the interest of saving time and effort later in the afternoon when she went out to scout the flood plains.. she opted to travel the extra distance earlier, when it was cooler, and nap now.. when the sun was directly overhead.

Likewise, she was quite unaware of Duranjaya's presence, despite how small the distance was between her current resting spot beneath an ancient oak and his current position.

To Duranjaya's credit, he really wasn't any good at realizing others were there until they were smack dab in his face.

Otherwise, he would've noticed how he managed to move closer to the sleeping mare in his company as he ate. But did he? Of course not. Soon enough, he was nearing the ancient oak, eyes closed as he paused his chewing to enjoy the flavor of the grass. He lifted his head, looking around out of curiosity more then anything, and only then did he spot the mare. And notice just how close he was to her. He blinked, and grimaced sheepishly, stepping away from her as quietly as he could.

What little grace Duranjaya had failed him just then, as he stumbled on a little rise in the grass. "Whoa!" He caught himself quickly, and paused to look around, eyes wide. When did a hill rise in the ground beneath his hooves?! It took a minute before realization hit: He might've woken the pretty mare. He looked towards her quietly, stepping back again (much slower and more carefully, this time) to give her space. Duranjaya would hate to disrupt her nap, not knowing what kind of mare she was. She might snap and attack him, for all he knew.

Wildfire was not a creature prone to snapping under any conditions, despite whatever her herdmates and her sister might have to say. Still, when rousted right out of a sound slumber, she was not as aware of herself or her words as her waking mind would have wished...

..which often lead to some rather unfortunate incidents involving strangers.

True to that form, only her head came up at the stallion's surprised exclamation, but her eyes retained the somewhat glassy surface of someone not quite awake, but trying really hard to be awake. "Oh dear," she half mumbled, blinking owlishly, "did I fall asleep on a path again?"

At first, Wildfire only got a blinking stare. She'd asked a question, didn't she? But Duran was distracted. A habit from his youth, staring off into space. Or into someone's face. Y'know, wherever his eyes happened to fall at the time. Belatedly, he remembered the question, and shook his head. "No, you didn't." He had the good grace to look sheepish. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up." Duranjaya smiled a little, but it was a strained, forced smile. He wasn't used to it, smiling, but he was nervous enough to try.

"I'll leave so you can go back to sleep, if you like." There was bound to be more grass elsewhere, after all.

Still blinking, but a little more aware of her surroundings, Wildfire managed to finally focus on the unknown stallion. After a moment, she shook her head slightly and spared a quick glance around, as if reaffirming for herself that she was indeed not on a well traveled path.

"So I'm not..." She said almost absently, though the slight quirk at the corners of her mouth showed a bit of the humor usually reserved for her close friends and relatives. "...but don't worry about it! I always figured that things happen for a reason, and you waking me up is probably a sign that I need to be up." She continued, pulling herself to her feet somewhat unsteadily. She also chose not to answer his final query, having discovered sometime ago that no company was bad company since predators were definitely not company. That, and friends are usually strangers until you've met them.

"Makes sense right?" She continued, turning to appraise him fully now that she was standing.

The slight quirk hadn't escaped him, and it made Duran feel a little less awkward. She wasn't angry for his intruding, that was good. He'd hate to have to bolt from some crazy mad mare after just getting home. He listened to her without replying for a little while, taking the time to really look at her. The mare didn't seem to be bad. She looked friendly, if not a little... odd. Or maybe he was the odd one. That wouldn't be the first time he was the oddity.

"Right," he agreed finally, nodding a little. He watched her, blinking a little, and arched an eyebrow. What was she looking at? He was pretty plain, as far as Soquili go, there wasn't anything to really look at... "I'm Duranjaya." He said after a minute, smirking a little. "What's your name?" It'd probably make conversations go better if he could refer to her as something other then the Mare Who He Woke Up.

Upon first glance, she decided he was a dashingly handsome stallion, but Wildfire was not the type of mare to be drawn in by sheer good looks. As irony would have it, her father had approached her again about her 'future plans,' so that particular conversation and all of it's associated overtones colored her meetings with males and soquili older then herself these days. Intellectually, she knew it shouldn't, and that she ought to be concentrating on the big move ahead, but emotions were ever a thing that she battled with herself over. Still, she couldn't help the slight eyebrow lift when he noticed her noticing him, and she grinned in response to his smirk.

"My name is Wildfire, and it's nice to meet you Duranjaya." She replied, carefully pronouncing his name in what she hoped was the correct way. "Hope I didn't maul that pronunciation, most of my herd have either dreadfully long hard edged names or short and simple ones." She added with a self deprecating smile.

"You didn't." He grinned, nodding. "It's nice to meet you, Wildfire. You can call me Duran, if you want. It's a bit easier to say."

He tilted his head, grinning a bit. "You're part of a herd, then?" He glanced around. "I don't smell anyone, where are they?" He frowned, looking at her. Was she lost? She looked capable of taking care of herself, but for all he knew she was under strict guard or some such silliness.
