Ehhhh...Morning...
It was strange enough that Durion had an odd love for nighttime and the moon, but it was even stranger to him that he had a repelled feeling inside whenever it came to the sun. Just the thought of sunrise made him irritated. The sight of it was even worse. And that's exactly what was occurring; the sunrise.
Was it because the sun was so hot against his dark coat? Was it the annoying hurt it caused his eyes from the brightness? He didn't know. But hell, it didn't matter anyway.
Yawning, the lion stood and left his shady patch under the trees in search of more constructive thoughts. Maybe the day wouldn't be so bad? Maybe he'd find someone interesting to talk to, or find a nice lady to flirt with? A con, perhaps?
Yeah...that sounded nice.
Smirking, the lion walked with a little more pep in his step, beginning his search for something nice to...borrow. He'd find what he was after soon enough. It was out there. And maybe it was closer than he thought...?

[Pretty image to go here later]
Sunrise! Safi was already up and eagerly awaiting it, as he did every day. Just as the lady-lioness had taught him so long ago, he greeted the sun and moon as they rose. It just seemed right. He especially loved greeting the sun, because it made the most AMAZING hello back. And when the first rays of light poured from the horizon, he yipped and howled his greeting...then started off to begin his day.
First was seeking out new things for Lela to craft with. Usually, Pich joined him, but she was sleeping soundly...Safi just couldn't bring himself to wake her. The bracelets around his ankles and earrings in his ears clinked and clanked a bit as he moved, but he didn't mind. He wasn't hunting right now. No...that would be later, when he and Fiyali would work on teaching the pups to hunt.
A particularly shiny stone caught the golden wild dog's attention. Grinning, he pawed at it a bit, then picked it up and placed it in the pack at his side...Another of Lela's creations, for when he went gathering.

Tail lashing behind him, the large lion continued to walk on, eyes flicking over the area constantly, searching for anything that caught his attention. The morning was dragging on, sunlight getting in the lion's eyes and irritating him.
Scents of animals and sounds of birds filled his senses and he was getting more and more frustrated with each step. Instead of holding his head high as before, it was now sagging down. Instead of tail lashing, it was stiff behind him. Durion sighed, eyes lax and ears no longer turning for sounds. He was getting severely disappointed with the day. But then...A ray of hope.
Was that a metallic jingle he heard in the air?
Grin stretching across his face, the dark lion headed in the direction of the sound. That sweet, delightful sound...
It was only a moment before a rather bright-looking wild dog came into his view. The wild dog...was covered in shiny things.
Durion grinned a dark grin. But he wiped it off his face, lest the wild dog notice him and see his devious expression. Instead, the lion put on lost, but kind look.
"Hello," he called almost softly from afar. "are you from around here?"

Safi froze as he heard a voice...and blinked. A lion? Lions didn't come through here often. The wild dog grinned and nodded. "That I am! Have you gotten yourself lost? Or just passin' through?"
Honestly, Safi rather liked lions. He didn't understand why others didn't. The ones he'd met tended to be rather amiable creatures...like himself! Only...less hyper. His search for materials could wait a little...he'd already stuffed a few interesting looking stones and bones in the bag. Right now, he needed to be a 'proper host'.

Huh, maybe the wild dog wasn't as scatter-brained as he looked if he guessed Durion was lost.
"Unfortunately, I'm lost." the lion said in a pathetic kind of way, ears turning back with emotion. But he continued to give a smile, appearing to be just like any normal, nice male lion who was perhaps looking for directions or friends. Durion of course was looking for neither, but the wild dog would never know that. The wild dog was covered in shiny trinkets, something sparkling near his side. Durion couldn't help but glance at them every now and again
"I'm journeying through these lands." Durion added, a massive plan already formed in his head.

"Well then...lucky for you that we met! Not many other creatures stay in this area, really. But those of us who do know it like the back of our paws!" Safi himself had once had a terrible sense of direction, but now...he could find his way to the sea and back home without getting lost!
He shifted a bit, to make the bag a little easier to manage while just leading someone about, instead of being crouched looking for things. "I'm Safi'mmoja."

"Is that right?" the lion said, grinning good-naturedly. "Yeah, lucky for me, then! 'cause I got myself more lost than I've ever been in my life, buddy." he threw in a term of endearment for extra points. Things were going well so far...The wild dog was playing right into his paws.
"Safi'mmoja?" the dark male echoed, nodding in comprehension. "I'm Durion." he bowed his head politely in greeting. Yeah, there were a few more points...
"I'm out here lookin' for...Well..." The lion's face took a sad turn and he paused, as if trying to man up for what he was about to say. "...My mate was taken for me." he said quietly, eyes downcast. "I left my homeland to search for her, but I've gotten myself lost. Never was good with directions..." he murmured softly.

His...mate? Safi felt really bad at that point. He knew he'd feel absolutely horrible if Fiyali was taken from him! He felt bad enough when he'd gone wandering! And getting lost on top of it! Oh geez. Safi's expression drooped in sympathy.
"I...oh man..." He whined a bit. "That's awful! I...I really wish there was something I could do..." He thought a bit, trying to think of a way he could help. "Well...do you know where the one who took your mate was headed? Or somethin' like that?"

If things got any easier, Durion would've laughed out loud. The poor, kind, naive wild dog...He was doing everything--EVERYTHING Durion wanted him to! It was always a good feeling when one of Durion's cons went smoothly. It made him feel so accomplished...
The dark lion frowned, turning his head away as if hiding tearful eyes. He shook his head, ridding himself of "depressing thoughts" and cleared his trembling throat. He took in a deep breath and faced the wild dog again, looking like he had just sucked in some mental strength to help his pitiful situation.
"I didn't see where they were headed, exactly. They...Hit me on the head. I passed out..." he murmured, sweeping through the 'memory'. "A large band of rogue leopards took her." he said, his voice low and tremulous, as if it pained him to speak of the occurrence. "They...told me...That if I didn't bring them the large ransom they asked for, they'd...They'd...!" he choked, turning his head away. He just couldn't bear to say more...
...Heheheh...

Safi really wanted to help now! He was almost crying from the story, feeling the lion's pain(so he thought). But...what was a ransom? He had NO idea. Honestly, he'd never heard the word before. Shaking his head a bit, he asked.
"I...I don't mean to sound stupid but...what's a ransom?" Oh...he hoped it was something he could help with! A mate was someone precious and perfect that one just couldn't live without! To have them taken from you...ripped away...

Jackpot.
Now the whole plan would snowball. Not the BAD kind of snowball--the good kind. The great kind.
The conning kind.
"Ah," Durion muttered, shaking himself out of his grieved state. "well...It's where someone takes something from you, and if you want that something back, you have to give them what they ask for." he explained. "In this case, the leopards asked for all the jewels and trinkets I possessed. They saw the ones on my mate, see. I guess that's why they took her...But they were mistaken." Durion's eyes clouded over, frowning deeply. "I...Don't have anything like that. So I don't know what to do..."
The lion paused, looking like something had dawned on him. "Oh, sorry!" he shouted guiltily. "I'm just asking for directions. Sorry about blabbering on like that." he chuckled quietly, expression still tinged with some sadness. "I guess finding the nearest watering hole would be my next step."

Safi's expression lit up suddenly. "OH! I...I can do better than just give directions!" He had enough trinkets back home...and Lela would understand if most of the ones he was wearing went to such a good cause! His tail wagged happily. "I can give you some of mine! I don't think my daughter would object to her creations going to a good cause!"
He nodded. "And I can give you directions for the next watering hole! So you'll be two steps ahead!"

Oh, gods! What a sucker!
"You--you--" Durion stammered, gaping in awe at the kindness of the stranger. "I've only just met you, and you'd--You'd do that? For me? For...For my mate?" he said, voice trembling with emotion. It was all he could do to keep a straight face...
No, really. It really was all he could do. There was a tremor in his throat that threatened to cause laughter if he didn't watch it. Fortunately, the fake tears were covering it up pretty well.
"I couldn't--I could never accept--" he blabbered, shaking his head. "...But...You would...Really?" he said hopefully.

The golden dog nodded. "I used to travel a lot...without my mate. And I remember how lonely it was without her..." He shook his head. "The thought of her being taken from me is...is hard. So...I want to help you get your mate back! It's the best way I can help, after all!" Family was everything, after all....whether you were a wild dog, lion, or whatever!
Without much prompting, Safi started to remove the trinkets that didn't hold too much significance. There was a necklace and a couple bracelets and an earring that meant a little too much to him to give...but the rest, he could. "I...I hope it's enough for you to get your mate back."

Bright eyes flashing over the pile of shining trinkets, the lion tried to suppress his grin. He darkened his face into a sad, grateful frown and walked closer to the wild dog. He examined the glittering bracelets and necklaces with a hint of greed in his eyes, but he managed to hide that look well enough. Even so, not much acting was needed, for the wild dog was an extremely gullible and naive one.
All the better.
"All of these things must be precious to you..." he said quietly, eyebrows knitting together. "I...I don't know how...But I will repay you someday. I will!" he declared strongly. He collected the trinkets, putting them on his neck and wrists and ears. Durion wasn't one to normally wear what he conned, but he had to for a short time. Maybe it looked good on him? Hah.
"Thank you...really." No, really. Seriously. Hahaha. "I don't...Don't know what else to say...Or how I can repay you...But thank you."
And now for the watering hole, aka his escape...
