So I just recycled my old thread on the strenght required of a sewing machine to sew a corset :3 Anyway, I need you guys' infinitely educated opinions on imitation whalebone-boned corsets.
The reason for this is that I went into a lingerie shop today who advertised corsets and asked after steel-boned ones, but they said that they don't have them and that nobody in the city does, the closest would be on the mainland. But they talked about their corsets with 'imitation whale bone', (or synthetic whale bone? Something...) and they said that it didn't twist or 'kink' as badly as steel (or something... my memory's not that great, I'm sick right now u.u; wink that it's really quite sturdy and that it can be used for cinching, but I didn't look very far into it. What do you guys think about it? Would it last alright? I'm not looking for anything for tightlacing, but something that will withstand day-to-day wear.
I can't find very much information about it online, either. Maybe I'm just bad at this whole looking thing. People in the corsetmakers livejournal didn't have anything negative to say about it, though :3

You need to ask about needles. A smaller needle will not let you sew through denim (like your mom said) but a larger one will. You have to figure out how thick the fabric is going to be and then determine what kind of needle you need.

If your mom has a smaller sewing machine, you might need to invest in a bigger one.

Hope this helps!

Alright, thank you very much! I'll definitely look into that- pretty sure the needle can be changed on ours. So if we get a thicker needle, it should be able to handle the corset?
Though I don't know how thick it will be... Not overly, I'm thinking, for the first couple.
Her machine is fairly big, but it's older. Probably over ten years old.

I need advice on whether or not to pursue the 'imitation whalebone' corsets in the lingerie shop! O: Help?

It'd be a lot cheaper, especially since I wouldn't have to travel for it, and it's only a first corset.
