A sigh left the girls lips as she came to sit in the grassy fields of her usual thinking spot. The day had been a busy one to say the least. She had to aid her father in prepping meat that was to be sold to the villagers and any wanderer that happened to be passing through. Then when she was done with that she had to help her mother with the quilts she was selling and then move on to help her little sister with the bouquets that she'd make from the flowers she'd gather when walking near the woods. Once they were settled she managed to deal with her own business. Jewelry. She had sold all of the necklaces and bracelets she fashioned and so she was in need of making more.
Many would question why she chose to make more while being alone but she just gave them the same answer. "Why try to make jewelry in an area where the materials are scarce when I can go somewhere that the materials are plenty and away from prying eyes." They found her most odd and it got to the point where Cailin preferred it that way. The number of men seeking to court her had decreased drastically. As the sun set, she created a small pit for a fire and lit it a blaze so that she'd have some light to work by.

Devi glanced at where the sun had been moments ago and sighed. She wouldn't be there when Sutien woke. Again. It was getting harder to get back before dark on these day trips of hers. She was wearing a light green skirt and a brownish top. Something very mellow. Something that wouldn't make her stand out while wandering around the market. As always. There'd been no new offers for a week or more. She'd lost track after the last time she'd been away. The thief was running low on funds. She'd have to search out new clients. In a new city. To far away from Sutien for her liking.
She caught sight of a fire ahead. There shouldn't have been anyone out this far, not after dark, anyway. Her home was a few miles, still. But the fire worried her. She approached as quietly as skirts would allow, stopping right outside the line of light and saw... The butcher's daughter? She'd seen her that day, in the market. What was she doing out this far... making jewelry?

Cailin hummed a light tune and continued on her work but now she felt as if she weren't alone but she didn't panic. Instead she simply smiled and called out to them. "You can join me by the fire if you'd like. I'm sure you'd feel much warmer if you did so." Yeah she wanted to be alone at first but now that she had some company she would most certainly accept and enjoy it. Pausing her works, she raised her head and looked in the direction she sensed the presence coming from. She wanted to see there face and show them that she was paying attention. After all it was only the polite thing to do.
"Hungry? I've got plenty of berries to spare." Her left hand moved and motioned to the basket filled with wild raspberries that she had picked earlier that rested by her side.

"Uh. No thanks." Devi stepped into the light slowly, cautiously. It didn't make any sense for her to be out here. Then again, maybe she was thinking the same thing about Devi. Only Devi had a secret reason. What was the jeweler's excuse? "I've already eaten."
She settled be the fire, still watching Cailin warily. Devi almost laughed. She was the stranger coming in out of the dark. She was lucky that the woman had invited her to the fire rather than... She couldn't tell if the jeweler was armed or not. "If I may ask, and please tell me if I am overstepping my bounds, but what are you doing out here?"

"I enjoy the serenity of this place. No one giving judging glances and not a nagging father to have to deal with. That and the materials I use for my jewelry are bountiful here." She smiled and brought her hand that had gestured to the berry filled basket, back to her lap where the jewelry rested. "Might I ask what brings you here, though I understand fully if you wish to keep that to yourself."
Cailin kept her eyes on Devi, not once thinking that she would do anything. Probably because if Devi had wanted to, she wouldn't have shown her face and risk Cailin surviving the encounter and ratting her out.

Devi nodded slowly. The reason made sense. Living away from home gave her the freedom to do as she wished wherever she wished, without anyone judging or nagging at her. It was one of the many reasons that she'd left. Without a husband. Her parents probably pretended they didn't have a daughter, at this point. That might explain the looks she got while actually in town. "I suppose I can understand that." Devi looked at what the girl was making, smiling. "You make beautiful things."
"I live out this way, supposedly." Devi smirked. "I don't spend a lot of time in the village here, which was why I was surprised to see anyone else out here this late." The thief was probably looked at as a disgrace by those people, but she had Sutien. What did they matter? "I'm Devi."

"Why thank you, though it's not entirely my doing. Nature provided beautiful materials for me to use." She chuckled briefly before continuing on with the conversation. "You are so very lucky to be able to live out here...perhaps one day I can share your luck. Being in that village is so suffocating and they only seem to care about two things. Marrying off their daughters and how to rid themselves of the...well as they like to put it...'Gargoyle Menace'." She rolled her eyes as she said that. Clearly she was fond of those kind of thoughts.
"Its a pleasure to meet you Devi. I'm Cailin."

Devi laughed. "Gargoyle menace? They wouldn't know what to do if they came across a real gargoyle. Other than to run and call it a menace." She felt herself grinning. At least that was something she had on the average villagers. She's met at least one. They seemed peaceable enough, as long as the humans kept to their side of the lake. And didn't trespass.
"You don't seem to be afraid of the, Cailin. The gargoyles, I mean." Devi smirked, letting her own mind wander to Sutien. How long would it be before the pup came looking for her. She knew that Devi was supposed to be home that night.

"Why should I. I've come to meet a total of three gargoyles, all of which were nice and two of the cutest gar-beasts. Well, the third gargoyle was a smidgen rude but her reasons were validated." She relaxed a bit more, shifting her weight onto her hip as she sat in a new position.
"I see the gargoyles being a lot like us. The only real differances are how they look, their strength and their customs of life."

"You've seen gar-beasts?" Devi ignored the mention of other gargoyles. Her own meetings in that area wouldn't endear the girl to her at all, since she was so fond of them already. Which hopefully wouldn't be a problem.
"Those could be considered a real difference, Cailin." Devi shook her head slowly. "Wars are fought over less." Even villages had troubles with each other over differing beliefs. It was a wonder there were any gargoyles left with the differences they had. "They have such strength and such weakness..."

"Why yes. A slender purple one which if I remember correctly was a girl. She was with a man and a few other gargoyles. She was so cute and all she was concerned about was being able to play fetch. That day was amusing. The other I saw was thicker than she...pretty compact. He was just curious concerning the world around him. The same night I met Nightwing and we came to name the male gar-beast Daivat."
"That I know..." A soft sigh left and then she smiled. "Yes, but that strength and that weakness is what I think really makes them a lot like us. We both our strong but in an instant can be taken out like that." She had snapped her fingers at the last part of her sentence.

"A slender purple one, huh." Devi started laughing. It was just too funny. Well, at least she knew what Sutien did while she wasn't around. Went out and made friends. Maybe keeping her a secret wasn't such a problem, since everyone seemed to be finding out about the pup. Before she reached adulthood, she was going to know everyone. If she could just keep the rest a secret, then. "So, you know Sutien, then."
"Well, I suppose that's life." She shrugged. "But I don't thing that the 'we-are-all-the-same-if-you-look-hard-enough' approach is going to work with the majority of the people around here."

"Ah so she's your girl. Such a precious pup she is and so very well mannered." Cailin couldn't help but chuckle remembering the pup and just how much fun she was. However the moment grew serious once more with the talk of gargoyles and how to get people to accept them came back up. "That I can say I full heartedly agree with you on. Honestly, I think the gargoyles would be better off if they found somewhere else to stay where they wouldn't be judged by humans like my father or the other villagers for that matter. But I suppose there isn't many places they could go."

Devi snickered. "Yeah, she well mannered-ly deprives me of sleep." She stretched a little, trying to keep her foot from catching in her skirts. Wearing pants around her home had really changed her liking of the things. They just always seemed to get in the way. "And the longer the sun is set, the more apt she is to show up here, looking for me." Just as long as the pup didn't go all they way to the village. Which Devi had trained her not to do.
"There isn't anywhere for them to go. People are everywhere." Devil tilted her head back, looking up at the sky. Was there a time when there were more of them? When looking up, one would just be there, silhouetted in the moon? "And there aren't many people who will just sit back and say hi, where do you hale from? Even I'm guilty of that, I suppose."
