The park. The somewhat empty park, thanks to it being a bit on the nippy side. The only people out were joggers and old people playing chess. Which was why they were daring to bring Jordan and her train out to play, to tell the truth. She would have less things to bump into and no buttons to push.
"Yeaaah, this is going to be boring," Axle said as he dropped the nonbreakable train on the ground. "But I'm sure you'll have fun somehow, kiddo!" he told his little girl as Ker put her down next to her train.
Jordi looked around. She eyed the trees, then the old guys at the chess tables. "Button," she declared, holding her arms up in a silent demand to go home again.

It was finally Galley's turn to take Vox somewhere with her, Rit being stuck behind in the garage with a rather nasty blown transfusion, and she'd selected a park that the aging toddler seemed to be somewhat fond of. At least, every time he went out somewhere it was usually to this park. Mostly because, she assumed, Rit didn't have the energy nor patience to travel any farther.
It was empty save for a few people, elderly mostly, though she did happen to spot a young couple(?) and something moving around at their feet. Walking near her Vox seemed to purse his lips together in a mild pout.
"Now, now. Be civil."

"Button!" Jordan demanded, jumping to try and get in her mother's arms again. Being only a bit over a foot tall, she wasn't having much luck. It didn't help when her father reached down and put her on her train.
"Look, kiddo, another kid!" he said, aiming her at Vox. "Why don't you go say hi?"
"Button!" Jordan repeated, although she stayed on her train. She liked the train!

Vox looked up as he clearly heard the words 'kiddo' and 'kid' sent in his direction, not caring which one was really meant for him, and he frowned deeper despite Galley's warning to be polite over this all. He didn't like other children, more so girl children, and this figure before him was both a child and a girl.
Double failure.
"I want to go home."
"I want you to go introduce yourself. Now."
Galley started to wheel herself closer, and now Vox had no choice but to keep up. As they approached the small family of three, the woman in the wheelchair let out a small greeting.
"Hello, good afternoon."

Jordi looked up, taking in the frown on the boy's face, and promptly scowled right back at him. Who cared if he wasn't happy? She wasn't, and that was the important part!
She looked around, wondering if there was at least SOMETHING interesting to do around there. No trains, no toys, nothing! So she crossed her arms over her chest and glared at the world in general and the boy in front of her in particular.
"Go on, Jordi, say hello," Ker said with an inward sigh.

"Vox, it would be polite for you to do the same."
Galley looked over at the more than very clearly unhappy Kelpie toddler at her side, her eyes widening for a moment as she noticed look that glinted in his eye. It only seemed to have developed within that moment, as if finding out that this other child was not what he wanted made him come to hate, and his face seemed to...devilize. Pointy ears, an extended face. Teeth that seemed sharp and inhuman . . .
"Vox?"
And it was gone. The look, the evil, the face. Staring back now was a young boy who just looked unhappy.
"Hello...Jordi? I'm Vox."

Jordi stared at him, having seen the look and fully comprehended what it meant, if not what it meant he was. This kid didn't like her one bit. She didn't want to deal with someone that looked like that!
"We go now," she told her parents, scooting so her train was facing the opposite direction. "We go see trains!" she added, leaving her parents to stare at her blankly before turning to try and apologize for her.
"Ah, sorry," Axle said, rubbing the back of his head with a hand. "She's still pretty young. She hasn't learned manners, or something."
"That and she's only met kids older than her," Ker agreed. "Jordan Pryor Underbridge, you get your little butt back here!" she yelled, chasing after the toddler who was now racing away.
"So," Axle said. "Is he a cabbage kid?"

"Ah, yes he did. My younger sister found his cabbage on our stoop one morning while going out to get the paper, a rare occurrence for her anyway, and he has been with us ever since. I take it the little one on the train is of the same manner?"
Galley smiled as she watched the interaction, knowing good and well how little children acted when the way things were going was not the way they wanted them to be heading. Caravel had been the brat out of Brig's two children, Sloop calm and darling, and it made her notice how odd Vox had really been growing up. Perhaps it was because he was a Kelpie and a cabbage child that things were the way they were, but . . .
"Vox usually travels around with my younger sister Rigging, but seeing as today they're all stuck inside the garage I was given the role of showing him around. I don't think he's ever seen little girls other than my niece, so this is a good experience for him."
Vox didn't care one way or the other, but he was feeling a little victorious. He had managed to scare away that annoying girl-thing and sent the older woman-thing chasing after. Perhaps he should make faces more often?
"It's okay about her manners, Mister. I didn't have very good ones either when I was smaller than I am now."

Axle looked at the little s**t, smiling slightly. "It seems you still don't," he said mildly. He glanced back as Ker returned with Jordi tucked under her arm like a sack of potatoes.
"I no like him!" Jordi said, struggling to get away. "I no like him! He ugly!"
"I'll take her," Axle said, taking the little girl from the dwarf. "Yes, Jordi's a cabbage baby," he added to Galley.

"Interesting. Rigging had spoke of meeting other children who had come from cabbages much like Vox had, but I have yet to meet another one until the little miss here. She looks quite the handful, but I bet she brightens the mood."
Galley reached over and took Vox's hand into her own as the woman returned with the toddler under her arm, the action mostly meant to keep the Kelpie back. She knew his temper - he did not like being insulted - and she knew that he most certainly did not like little girls. Well, she didn't now as much as she thought but she did know he hated Sloop with a passion.
" . . . . "
The Kelpie child was doing his best to bite his tongue towards the man, wanting to insult him for being a lowly human, but Galley's hand on his own served as a good warning and deterrent. He would merely remain silent.

"Actually we should get going," Axle said, earning a glance from Ker. "We're going to get Jordi fitted for her first ceremonial axe, isn't that right, Ker?"
"I thought--" Ker started out, then decided it was best to take advantage of his giving in now that she had gotten it. "We've already gotten the weapons maker picked out and everything," she told the other woman. "But I was thinking we should get her an axe for daily living, as well. Something little. You can never have too many."
Jordi looked at her parents. "We go now!" she finally said. "Bye bye ugly boy!"

"Oh, that sounds like fun, but an axe? Hopefully it won't be something she can hurt herself or others with, at least not while she's this little. And ceremonial? Is she not fully human as well?"
Galley was full of questions, her mind zooming a thousand different ways with curiosity. She had never really left the house before since Rit or one of the Twins did all the shopping, so she was really behind the times it seemed.
"This child is not as well, but I think we should all know that since they came from cabbages."
She was dumb.
And Vox was irritated. Did she DARE to call him ugly?
He would have to remain calm.

"She's a dwarf," Ker said. "Dwarf children always have their axes. It's cultural." And that was that, as far as she was concerned. That it'd be too heavy for the girl to lift until she was older didn't matter. It was the tradition of it that was important.
"So we need to get going now, before the store closes," Axle said, starting to walk away. Saying the little s**t that had fangs wasn't human was an understatement.
"Bye bye!" Jordan called out as they left, Ker carrying her train.
