"So, you're growing."
Vox nodded.
"And you want new clothing that doesn't look and/or feel like it's been handed down through several generations?"
Vox nodded again.
". . . Fine. I'm not in the mood to deal with you and your biting again because you're not getting your way, and Galley told me anyway that the only clothes we have to even consider giving to you belong to Sloop. I seriously doubt you want to wear anything pink or flowery."
"It wouldn't suit me at all."
So with that conversation in mind the usual pair of Rit and Vox set out towards their local clothing store, whichever one happened to actually be the cheapestclosest, with the full intent of getting the little Kelpie something decent to wear. He was growing at an astounding rate, probably because of what he was, so a new wardrobe was in the need.
"Remember the rules, okay? Bite anyone and you get a bath - and this time I'll hold my threats true."

Recently, Alex had let Devakanya start venturing into town alone. She was a bright girl, and even if she was silent and shy, she was still a unicorn. She had a horn and the girl could kick like a mule. Alexander had the sneaking suspicion anyone who tried to tangle with her might be in for much more than they bargained for. Of course, he didn't let her out with anything valuable, so when she spotted a very adorable dress, she had to ask her guardian to accompany her so he might buy it for her.
Captain Alexander Vega didn't have it in him to deny the unicorn a treat every now and then.
And they said he was just a crusty old barnacle.
So it was with great effort that the ex-pirate limped all the way down to the local clothing store, Devakanya in tow. It was a good thing she was so patient, or maybe just that she was quiet, as the winter weather slowed Alexander down much more than he cared to admit. "This is the place?" All he got was a nod, but that was no different than any other day. "Show me the dress."
Devakanya took the lead and begin to search through the aisles of children's clothing.

"Do you want to wear pants or shorts? I've seen you run around in just your underwear whenever Lee dressed you in anything longer than mid-calf, so I'm coming to take it that you don't like your legs covered all that well."
"Wet pants are heavier then wet shorts."
Vox sounded so matter-of-fact as he stomped into the little store that would be serving as his current outfitter, his tastes already in mind, and before Rit could say anything to stop him the little toddler took off through the racks like a small bat out of hell. Despite how grown-up he sounded and often acted, he still had that childish and devious streak in him that called for trouble.
"Oi! Vox! Come back here now!"
Rit started in at a run as well, upset that her smaller charge was going faster and with more ease, but she chalked it up to the crowds and racks and-
"Agrhgh!"
Rit contacted into someone head first, her gaze having been turned away to look down at Vox, and as she stumbled back holding her nose she could only bite her tongue to prevent any cursewords from leaking out. The woman knew when she was in the wrong - and she was. Looking towards the man who seemed to be following someone, she rubbed her nose before bobbing her head in apology.
"God, man. I'm sorry, are you okay?"

Devakanaya only saw the woman barreling around the racks a split second before the collided into Alex. There was nothing the unicorn could do but stare it wide-eyed shock, looking back and forth between the apologetic stranger and the crumpled heap on the ground that resembled her guardian. Oh, he was not going to be happy about this. Not good for his pride. Not at all.
The unicorn was correct in that statement. Alex had hit the ground very hard, and not only did that hurt his leg a good deal, the barnacle of a man took a good whack to the ego every time his disability became glaringly apparent. He did not hold in his string of sailor's curses, it was nothing Devakanya hadn't heard before, and struggled on the floor before he took his charge's offered hand and very slowly pulled himself to his feet. There was nothing graceful about it. The unicorn handed him his cane and he nodded his thanks to her before turning cold-eyed fury onto the woman who had charged into him like some sort of wild animal.
"Han'it 'nyone 'er taught you t' look where yer goin', miss!? S'goddamn store, na' a street." Alex scowled and shifted. Goddamnmit, his leg was killing him.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
Rit could only repeat the phrase like a broken record, her body bent slightly in an apologetic bow like she had seen her older family members do when saying sorry, and the color of terror slowly decorated her cheeks. It was bad manners, shitty shitty manners, to knock someone over - double so when that person was a cripple.
"I was chasing my...nephew...and wasn't pay attention to where I was headed. I know better than to run, but it was just -"
Her voice sounded like she was on the verge of tears, which was kind of odd, but Rit really didn't want to get beat in public or be thrown out because of a stupid pony-human-child she'd been chasing. Vox always seemed to be ruining things for her, and...
"You sound stupid when you're acting like a girl not wanting to get in trouble."
Speak or think of the devil and he oft appears, Vox coming out from behind a stack of clothing, and he looked over at Rit with his uncaring and inhuman eyes. It was strange how she was acting, but Vox had seen her like this once or twice before - when she was trying to get him out of trouble.
"Dammit Vox! I should kill you-"

Alex, a man of the seas for many a year, could recognize a sea monster when he saw one. Not only was the man wise, but the sore under the wrap on his left hand (courtesy of none other than the one and only Davy Jones) would begin to throb and send sharp jolts of pain shuddering through his arm...much like the one he got when he looked Vox over.
"In God's name, kill the little beast indeed! Do you even know what that is!?"
Idiot. Keeping a Kelpie!
Devakanya, who was not privy to pirate knowledge or special cripple powers, could only watch and grow more and more horrified as Alex made a complete a** out of himself. And to think, she might have been considering accepting the man as her father. Out of the question. He was just too mean to other people! (The unicorn often wondered why she was never on the receiving end of that sharp tongue, but never look a gift horse in the mouth, she supposed.)
There was little else she could do, but the child walked over to Vox and pat his shoulder gently before pointing to Alex and shaking her head. He didn't know anything, anyways.

"Eh?"
Rit's expression changed from one of anger/apology/death wish as she looked at Vox over to one of confusion and surprise as she looked at the man before her. He had actually agreed with her in terms of her threat, which was fake of course, and it made her honestly...shocked. Most people wouldn't say anything like that about something else, more so when she noticed that said person had a pretty pretty unicorn girl thing with them (for the record though, Rit found Devakanya strikingly beautiful).
"Of course I know what he is, he's a little brat that is going to have the holy bath of his life tonight. Or do you mean to ask me if I know what he is an in his race - in which I do too. He's a Kel - you might not wanna touch him."
Rit stopped mid sentence as she watched Devakanya reach over and pat Vox's shoulder, and though she half expected the young toddler to flip out and snap at her hands in the way he did everyone else who touched him, he seemed to shrug it off.
The reason being? Vox knew this man knew what he was - and he delighted in seeing the clear rejection it produced. Most people when they learned he was a Kelpie acted dumb and unsurprised, few of them showed any fear, but here was a stranger who knew what a Kelpie really was.
"So you know what I am, old man?"

Alexander's words died in his mouth as he watched his unicorn walk over to comfort the Kelpie. His good hand immediately went for the pistol he kept at his side, jaw clenching as he waited for Vox, is that what she called him?, to turn and take a hunk out of Devakanya's hide. He did not, however, and simply proceeded to back sass the ex-captain. Alexander blinked and wondered, momentarily, if this was perhaps Devi was a unicorn, and maybe he had no interest in anything that was not human.
Hand relaxing to his side, the pirate...ex-pirate fixed Vox with a hard look. "A'course I know what you are, ye god-awful beast. I canneigh help bu' wonder why ye haven' taken down th' lass who keeps ye, though," he muttered, giving Rit what might be an apologetic look. Maybe. Though, it wasn't his fault the fool was keeping a Kelpie.
Devakanya remained confused, looking from her very agitated guardian, to Vox, back to the woman taking care of Vox. She had never heard of a Kelpie, but if it was named after seaweed, she wasn't exactly sure why it was a problem. Her father, rather, Alex, however, was acting the same way he did when Taki had kissed her, so maybe it was just one of those weird father things he kept trying to do. Devakanya sighed and shook her head, turning her attention back to Vox. Everyone was paying attention to him, anyways.

"I've learned to not bite the hand that feeds you - or at least the hand that will take you around to other choices for food. But still . . ."
At his remark Vox moved from Devi's side and over to Rit's, his hand reaching out and sliding up part of the shorts that she wore on her leg. As it moved up a large bite mark came in to view, one that was slightly old and fading into a scar, but it was huge and clearly inhuman. Shortly above that mark were several others, varying in size and age, indicating Vox did indeed like to bite Rit. He liked to bite her a lot.
"In my defense though, I never actually swallowed. I don't eat women, they're too fatty. Your pretty little friend is safe also, because I don't like to consume things interesting to look at."
Rit slapped Vox's hand away from her shorts and quickly pulled the leg back down, her cheeks turning bright red as she smoothed the fabric down, and once she seemed to regain herself she glared down at the little brat. If she could have killed him right now she would have, just ripped his little head off and kicked it around the store for a while, but murder was wrong and even though she knew she'd be fine in prison she really didn't want to go.
"What he means to say about not eating me or anyone else is that he knows what will come of it. Instinct or not, he's not stupid enough to put his own life in danger when he knows he can't take down without having to put up a fight."
Vox nodded in agreement with Rit's words, knowing that most of his restraint was due to his size. At best he could take down someone of Caravel's stature, but Rit was a far dream - the man before him a fantasy. For now.
"And again, I'm really sorry I plowed into you without looking. Is there any way I can make up for it to you and your companion?"
Business talk.

Alexander just stared in awe, wondering if Rit were just stupid or too kind-hearted to do the right thing when it came to her own safety (and thus, still making her a blooming idiot). "Are ye abs'lutely daft, woman?" the ex-pirate asked in wondering, shaking his head. "Th' beast 'as been takin' little nibbles of ye', an' ye' keep raisin' 'im 'nyways." Alex sighed. "Yer jes' askin' fer trouble. Wha' are ye gonna do when 'e finally takes a hunk outta one of 'is li'l playmates?"
Devakanya also took on a stare, but hers was mostly in awe of Vox's verbosity. If only she could talk like that. Eventually, it registered with the small unicorn that the boy had been chatting casually about eating people, and while he might have mentioned she wouldn't have made a tasty snack, she wasn't exactly sure he was the sort that she wanted to associate with. What if he got really, really hungry one day? Sometimes when she was hungry, she ate things she didn't like.
Alexander shook his head and regarded Rit cooly. "'er name is Devakanya. An' I am Captain Alexander Vega, thank you," the man sniffed. He did believe in introductions and general politeness, even if he didn't always exercise it.

"My name is Rigging duShepe, current head of the duShepe Family. This here, as you have heard me call him several times, is Vox. I am pleased to make your acquaintance, though it had to be through a very improper meeting."
Rit folded her hand against herself as she bowed slightly forward, the action one of a business person thanking someone for their purchase or their time. It was ingrained in her, these simple actions, and she reached down and made Vox bend his head too. The toddler obliged, his mind set on something else at the moment, but it was mostly because he was probably enjoying the fear that Alex seemed to be submitting towards him.
Someone knew to fear him. So wonderful.
"As for the day when he kills me? I wonder how long I'll have to wait for it, but hopefully I'll be prepared or my brother will have come back and I can throw him to him. I don't care for the beast."
