The small black filly trotted along at her sire’s side, reveling in the feeling of a freshly brushed coat. She was glad they lived so close to the two-legs; when she was a bit older she could go and have them brush her whenever she wanted. All the knots in her mane and tail, all the dirt in her coat gone. It was wonderful! She couldn’t believe how messy she’d been before, how lovely she looked now! She was always going to take care of her looks, like her riruy did and like her brother did. She couldn’t understand how her ute put up with tangles in her long mane and tail, how she could put up with being muddy, or just have a roll in the grass to get rid of it.
“Riruy,” she said after a few moments of thought, looking up at the golden stallion with wide yellow eyes, “when can we go and get brushed again? Can we go soon riruy?” It wouldn’t be long at all before the currently perfect state of her coat was ruined; she’d feel awfully embarrassed whenever she saw herself in the water once she was messy again.

Diego chuckled softly as his daughter spoke; seemed as though she was going to grow up into a proper little lady and actually be happy with it. Thank goodness for that; he’d been dreading a repeat of Sekhmet with Sabina and her tree sister. “Soon,” he said with a nod, “maybe in ten suns or so if you’re well behaved.” He hardly needed to add that clause; Sabina was always sweet and polite to people... Well almost always; she was a foal after all and had her moments of stubbornness and petulance as all foals did. Plus, of course, she tended to get snappy if she wasn’t allowed to perfect whatever she was up to before being called away to do something else. Nevertheless, he didn’t anticipate her being naughty enough for him to withhold the pleasure of a good brushing from her.
“Nearly home now,” the blue-eyed stallion observed as he looked back in the direction they were heading. “It’s still early, so you can go and find your friends when we get back if you like; show them all how pretty you look.” She liked doing that, doing anything that got her complimented. She wasn’t vain or anything as such - probably considerably less vain than he himself was - she just really enjoyed being told that she was good at something, or of course in this case that she looked lovely. That was fair enough, he supposed, everyone liked to be praised, after all.

"I'm the most beautiful creature in all the lands! Yes I am!" Perun sang as he walked with his high-gait step, as he tried to keep his tail from dragging along the ground. This winged creature was really quite vain, and yet he couldn't seem to figure out that this was why others did not like him. Even his betrothed hated him and he was to blinded by his own looks to understand why. Spying a puddle nearby he walked up to it and looked down at his reflection. "Oh yes look at that stallion. He is the most wonderful thing in all the lands. Oh yes he is!"
Perun laughed as he raised his head back up. He was in high hopes as he had figured out the perfect plan to get his love to bear children for him before his evil twin stole his betrothed away from him and stole her purity. All he needed to do was go and talk to well, a ghost, he had come across in his time. "Oh yes I am so wonderful!"

The voice caught his attention, and Diego’s interest was piqued enough to wonder who was talking to themselves. After a moment of scanning, he spotted the Ichsa stallion, and found himself raising an eyebrow. Looked like somebody was one or two elppas short of a tree.
Touching his daughter’s back with one wing to attract her attention, Diego changed course to head towards the prancing Ichsa. Perhaps a lesson in idiots would do his daughter some good, he held out hope yet of her developing an intellectual spark. Not all that much admittedly, but he supposed all he could do was try. At least she had good sense.
Sabina turned her head to look in the direction her father was heading, and she too saw the Ichsa. She knew what an Ichsa was; there were one or two in the herd and she’s seen at least one other wandering close by. None of them had been this pretty though; she’d thought that only Jala were pretty before but it seemed she was wrong. He must go to the humans a lot!
“Wow!” the black filly exclaimed after a moment as they drew a bit closer to the black and purple Ichsa, “you’re so pretty!” She would be pretty and neat like him when she grew up. Well not the same, because he was an Ichsa but she would like to have her mane and tail all long like that but still smooth and well looked after. Short looked fine on her riruy, but it wasn’t very ladylike.

Perun looked up, pausing from his daily complimenting of himself and smiled. "Of course I'm pretty! I'm the most beautiful stallion in all the lands." He nodded, his vanity further fueled by this young filly's words. "You are quite pretty yourself. Though not quite as pretty as I am. Maybe one day you'll get there though." The vain stallion smiled at the young one before looking up at the older stallion.
"And you must be the father of this wonderful young one. You should be quite proud of her. Though I'm assuming most of her good looks come from her mother?" Perun laughed gently as he gently shook his head to move his mane back into its perfect position. He hated it when even a strand of hair was out of place, it ruined the perfection of his beauty!

Diego raised his eyebrows further and looked the stallion from eartip to hooves and back up again. What he saw did not impress him any more than the stallion’s words had done. Such horribly crass markings he had. Still, probably wasn’t much point saying that. “Assumptions are dangerous things,” the golden stallion said with a smile. “Why, when I first saw you I assumed you had a brain. Just goes to show you how wrong you can be, humm?”
At least the twit hadn’t decided to insult his daughter’s appearance; Sabina was rather... particular about her image. If the Ichsa had hurt her feelings, he would have had to give him the thrashing of his life. It was tempting to do so in any case, but he resisted the impulse; ripping him to shreds verbally would be more satisfying in the long run and would make a far better anecdote; ‘And then I beat the drek out of him’ just wasn’t all that witty.
Sabina looked from one stallion to the other, torn between thanking the Ichsa for his compliment and telling him that her father was considered very handsome by most people. In the end she gave in and smiled. “Thank you; I’ve just been to the two legs to be brushed. I looked all nasty and messy before, I’m going to go and see them lots and lots from now on. What’s your name pretty Ichsa? I’m Sabina.”
Her riruy would introduce himself when he felt like it; she knew by now that he didn’t like to be spoken up for, he was very good at it himself of course, he just didn’t always do it right away. Something about timing, he told her, and apparently it was very important to how people saw you. Oh well, maybe she’d get it when she grew up a bit more.

Perun snorted at the stallion in slight irritation. "Brains? Who needs a brain when one has beauty? One can usually get whatever they want with beauty alone, though you are quite plain so of course you'd need that thing called a brain." Turning his attention back to the young filly he smiled once more.
"Ah yes the humans. They are quite helpful aren't they? I try to go to them at least every other day so I can keep up this perfect and most beautiful image." He said with a smile as he thought back to the day before. Oh how the humans worshiped his good looks! Little did he know they were actually making fun of him. "Sabina? Such a pretty name to go with such a pretty young lady. My name is Perun." He lowered his head in a bow as he introduced himself.

“Perun,” the black filly echoed, “I’ve never heard a name quite like that before; it’s lovely!” He didn’t seem very lovely though. He was pretty, but he was being rude to her riruy, but he was being nice to her. It was weird, but she saw no harm in keeping being nice to him so long as he didn’t get really nasty. Maybe he just didn’t want to admit other stallions could be attractive, she knew some were like that, or maybe he didn’t like the colour gold. Well either way, it didn’t matter what Perun thought; her riruy’s ego was way too tough to be affected by it.
What a little drek head, and no wonder he was given his head was so far up his own arse. “You really do think the sun shines out of your backside, don’t you?” Diego said with a snort of derision. “I must say I’ve met some fairly pathetic people in my time, but you top the list. Still, I suppose it’s vital to you to believe you’re the prettiest princess ever to prance through Urin. Given looks seem to be all you have, playing up how good yours are, and their importance must be the only thing keeping you from a spiral of depression and self-loathing. Oh, and I’m Diego by the by, if you have room for that information inside your skull alongside your ego.”
Still, Sabina seemed quite taken with him. Perhaps she was morbidly fascinated by his stupidity as well, or was having fun admiring him as one might a pretty sunset. Well it hardly mattered, they wouldn’t linger much longer unless he saw good reason... Though he was having fun outwitting the berk at every turn.

"Why thank you, Sabina." Perun smiled as he listened to her talk. Perhaps she'll turn out better then her father. "Ah but the sun shines in the sky now from my backside. As for the prettiest princess, that would go to my betrothed, Sonata. I have certain aspects that make it impossible for me to fill the princess role." He gave a small snicker before raising his head to hold it even higher.
"Diego? Sounds like such a common name. It would be easy to remember such a common name for such a common looking stallion." At this point, he did not care if he offended the little filly by acting the way he was towards her father. "My beauty will always get me what I want. Your brains will get you what you want, so why don't we leave it at that?"

Diego gave a snort of derision. “Oh really?” he lent his head around to glance between the Ichsa’s legs. “Oh, so you do; I didn’t notice until you mentioned it. A for leaving it at that,” his face hardened, “I think that’s a very good idea, because my patience is running thin with you. How about this; you take your lustrous locks and your tiny testicles out of my sight right the moment, and you get to keep both. Sound like a good deal to you, princess?” A battle of wits was after all rather difficult to have with someone so clearly unarmed. Rearranging that pretty face would give up quite some satisfaction, as would making a gelding of the pillock.
Sabina glanced nervously up at her father; he really was starting to get cross now... Perhaps she shouldn’t have been so nice to Perun. She hoped they didn’t end up fighting; she’d seen stallions fight a couple of times and it was scary. Sparring between friends was fun to watch, but real fights where people really wanted to hurt each other weren’t. She didn’t want her riruy to get hurt.

Perun snorted in irritation. He did not like being called a princess when he was so clearly the wrong gender for such a role! Glancing down at Sabina the vain stallion had an idea. "Why don't you let your pretty daughter Sabina choose whether I stay or go?" He looked back up at Diego and smiled. "Or are you to afraid that she'll let her own vanity get in the way of her life?"

Diego pinned his ears back and stamped the ground; he was having no more of this. Not only was this stallion a feather-brained pillock, but something about the way he kept calling Sabina pretty was down right creepy. From strangers, that was only okay when foals were really tiny in his mind. Perhaps he was being crazy and over protective, but he couldn’t bring himself to care right now. Any excuse to give the priss a good kicking.
“I credit her with more intelligence than that. In fact, how about we let her make another choice? Like whether or not you get out of here in one piece, you primping pansey.”
Sabina twitched her tail in agitation and shuffled her wings; she’d never seen her father so angry! This couldn’t be good. “I... I think you should go now,” she said turning to Perun. “If you turn around and go away now, you don’t have to get hurt.” She didn’t want to see him get hurt... Well she didn’t! He’d been mean to her riruy, but that didn’t mean he deserved to get hurt, and she didn’t want her father fighting the Ichsa anyway. That horn looked pretty sharp to her.

Perun snorted at the stallion in irritation. His beauty was for more important to him then some silly fight this stallion insisted on having. "Very well Sabina. I will go now. We wouldn't want any blood to drip onto that pretty coat of yours." He said with a smile as he turned away from the pair. As he walked away, his head was held high, his hooves high stepping so as not to step on his mane and tail, and his wings were held up high, as he showed off to no one in particular. One day his vanity would get himself into trouble.

Diego snorted and watched the idiot go, relaxing as the Ichsa retreated. "Pillock," he muttered to nobody in particular before turning to Sabina and saying; "please don't repeat that word, it's rude. Thoroughly deserved in this case, but rude all the same. Hum. Well. Come on now, let's get back home." Shaking his head to himself and consciously wiping the scowl from his face, Diego turned back towards his herd's territories and set off at an easy walk, putting the stupid princess out of his mind.
Sabina giggled and nodded, privately storing the word away in her mind so that she could think it at people who she didn't like. She still rather liked the stallion Perun, but she did have to admit he was very very vain and a bit stupid. She wasn't all that smart herself, but at least she had the sense not to keep being rude to people who looked like hitting her. She wasn't going to grow up like that. No. She was going to be pretty, and witty, and bright. It was possible to do all three at once, wasn't it?
