Gassho all,

It's a new year, and as all things start anew, so does the schedule at a monstery my Zendo is affiliated with. The teacher and abbot, Rev. Denko Osho runs the monastery, and oddly enough, lives there as well.

This weekend is a Sesshin, a shortened version of the weeklong sesshin. Basically, this is a Zen thing where you sit, for a very long time for several days, not talking and not making eye contact. Everything is introverted. We get interviews (dokusan) with the teacher, Denko Osho, and recieve our Koans and get a chance to try and answer it.

Friday we will drive up at around 1 pm, and I'll return sometime late Sunday. The journal, camera and my mind are going with me. Hopefully 2 out of the three are allowed to be used (who knows if my mind will even function). When I get back, you'll have some interesting things to read and look at, hopefully, and get an understanding of authentic Rinzai Zen.

You know of this place? Who should I say is saying hi? PM, for privacy.

No worries about privacy, I just know of Pine Hill, I've never been - so saying my name specifically will mean nothing to anyone who's there. biggrin I'm just visiting the monastary vicariously through you. xd

I am back at home from the Sesshin. It was perhaps the most painful experience of my life, and I am sorry that it ended so soon.

Zazen practice is a very interesting thing, all of this sitting and posture, breath and thought. It is beyond anything I can describe, but I wasn't all "happy mr. metaphysical".

It was horrendous. Being alone with my mind, for 17 hours in almost continuous contemplation. Very extreme things happen, you cry, want to scream, think that it will never end, start to panic in your mind, lash out in your mind at others and at yourself. It is a very strange experience, indeed.

I have some pictures and some writings that I put down, which will be uploaded tomorrow. It has been a very long weekend.

Gassho.

You experienced why I'm afraid of visiting a monastary of any kind, Makoto - 17 hours with my brain? I'm petrified. 3nodding

Nice pictures though, and I'm glad you came back to us. heart

I think thats probably why most people are afraid of meditation, spending time with their brain and being forced to see how idiotic they are most of the time. Isn't the ego wonderful? heh

I think I'm getting slightly better myself - in the society on wednesday my mind kept making me have an itch in a new area to try a\nd distract me, but I managed to mainly ignore it...
