As cold as the weather was, there were certain things that made Casia feel better in times of stress, and one of them was to do 'normal' things. Pouring orange juice at breakfast, or listening to an old record she had liked when she was little. Holidays were especially good to put her at ease, and Valentine's day was no exception. She knew where she stood with holidays and what to do when they happened. It wasn't confusing when almost everything else seemed to be right now, so Casia clung to Valentine's day like a life preserver. She was going to make the holiday groovy whether it liked it or not.

And that was funny really, because Casia had never thought much about the holiday before. But she had seen the TV specials and stuff, so she knew how it worked, and it seemed to be pretty simple. So she had asked Jane and gotten to go to the grocery store, where she was now examining the Valentine selection.

Somewhere in all that pink there had to be something really boss her friends would like to get. She just had to find it.

Melchizedek wasn't sure what the hell he was doing out. He didn't believe in the stupid, sissy girly holidays. For crying out loud, he was a pirate and didn't need to try anything as nonsensical as stupid girly candy hearts. Of course, on the other hand, Valentine's day was the world's biggest excuse to buy chocolate for "your friends" and then scarf it all while your guardian wasn't looking. Which was what had brought Melchy along to the grocery store with Katrina in the first place. He had no interest in anything pink or girly but headed immediately for the chocolate kisses, looking through them for the ones made out of white and dark chocolate.

"Who th'hell wants almonds?" he asked under his breath, not even paying attention to the other people around him. Everyone was either some sort of little girl or some stupid, sappy lovesick couple fawning over each other. Valentine's Day was for sissies.

Casia frowned and picked up a chocolate kitten, trying to imagine if Melchizedek would find it funny. It had been a while since she had last seen the pirate cat, and she couldn't tell, but it looked cute. "Maybe too cute..." Real cats didn't look like their eyes were melting at you, and as far as pirate cats went, the chocolate kitten hardly looked fearsome and intrepid. She could just imagine what Melchy would say, he would look at it and say...

Who th'hell wants almonds? She shook her head, but she had definitely heard it and looked up to see the very friend in question, the grooviest coincidence to happen to her all week. Grinning, she walked up to him but paused as she reached the boy. What if he didn't remember her? What if he was another, very similar looking cat-person-pirate? She bit her lip, but decided that in the end, the risk of embarrassment was far less worrying than the risk of passing up such a chance meeting and said "Melchy?" tentatively.

Melchy would have recognized that voice anywhere. His ears twitched and he backed slowly out of the bin of chocolates he had been digging through, half-turning in the direction of Casia's voice. When he caught sight of her, his mildly annoyed expression immediately turned sunny, and he dropped the bag of kisses he was holding. "Casia?" he asked, ducking under the arm of an annoyed-looking mother with two toddlers and bouncing back up in front of Casia.

"Heyyyy!" He hadn't seen Casia in forever. Honestly, he hadn't seen anyone in forever. Everyone seemed to just be...somewhere else, nowadays, and he had been gone on that stupid trip for three months...he didn't even know. It was impossible to find anyone nowadays. "Aw, man, Casia, how are you?"

Casia's smile turned sunny as the old friend recognized her and she gave him a wave. "I'm pretty groovy." she said flippantly, her answer to every question of the sort. "I've been missing you though, how have you been?" The Melchy she remembered was one cool cat and she felt a nostalgic rush of comfort at hearing the friendly voice. "It's the coolest coincidence, I was just wondering what to buy my friends for Valentine's Day and here you are!"

At that moment though, Jane rounded the corner. "Mango juice or peach juice?" she asked Casia and the siren stiffened. Jane was NOT part of her pleasant memories with Melchy. "Um... Peach." the siren said, and the woman nodded, putting it in the cart and walking off. Casia watched her go for a moment, then turned back to the pirate. "So... Yeah! How've you been? Have you been off on any adventures? Did you see sirens? What do you want for Valentine's Day?" She barraged him with questions to take her mind off of the momentary disruption.

So......that was odd. Melchy didn't recognize the woman who showed up briefly, but there was something about the way Casia responded to her that made him decide it was probably a good idea not to say anything about that for the moment. Instead, he ran a hand through his hair and shrugged at the questions. "Dunno," he began. "I been off on a sailin' trip. Cap'n hauled my sorry a** out t'this rock f'r three months to teach me to sail." He shook his head. "It's cool an' all, but after a certain point, you just wanna get the hell out. Anywhere else." He flicked his tail and grinned again. "But other'n that, I've been having a grand time. Haven' really been seeing anyone, though." He shrugged.

Valentine's Day? Plans? Oh Lord, no, he did not want those. He didn't want to go anywhere or do anything related to that stupid holiday. It was pink. Girls were cool and all, but really...not quite his idea of a good time. "Dunno about the holiday...thing," he answered dismissively. "Prolly not gonna do a whole lotta anythin'. An' you?"

Casia nodded sympathetically. Being kidnapped by one's parent for three months sounded, if nothing else, tiring. "Well," she said diplomatically, "I'm glad you're back."

She looked determinedly at the shelves of pink things. "Somewhere in here I am going to find groovy gifts for all my friends and then," she paused, "Uh, well... I think that's all people actually do on Valentine's Day." she decided. "It's not exactly an action packed kind of thing, is it?" If Melchy didn't know what he wanted her to get him though, then maybe she should just get him some chocolate, whether melty-kitten shaped or not. You couldn't go wrong with chocolate. But... Could cats even eat chocolate? She looked at Melchy carefully. If cats couldn't, could he? She was hesitant to ask him about something like that. If she couldn't eat chocolate she wouldn't want people bringing it up all the time.

"Glad I'm back, too," Melchy said, and grinned. "Good to see you, too. God, it's been way too long."

When Casia turned her attention back to the shelves, Melchy did as well. He really didn't know much about Valentine's Day, except that it had something to do with candy and pink and hearts...or something similarly annoying. But if all it was was giving out presents, it could be significantly more fun than he had realized. "Wait, it's a present holiday?" he asked. "Like as much as Christmas, or like...not so much?" Tilting his head and running a hand through his hair, it took him a minute to notice how Casia was studying him. Raising an eyebrow at her, he tilted his head and gave her a lazy smile. "Somethin' up?" he asked. "Cat gotcher tongue?" And he grinned smugly there, proud of himself for that little pun.

Casia smiled weakly. It felt like it had been even longer than it was. A different time, a different place.

"Nooo..." she said slowly, "Not so much as Christmas because it's all about love and friendship and stuff so you don't have to give gifts to your aunts or anything. And it's mostly candy." She frowned and tapped her chin with the carefully practiced air of a novice playing at being an expert. "Also, there are little cards, but they all have really bad puns and they're kind of mushy." As he caught her gaze on him, she looked embarrassed. Not wanting to admit the silly sort of question running through her head, the siren smiled absentmindedly at his pun and quickly thought up a tactful sort of way to ask without really asking. "Um... Just wondering what kind of candy you like." she said easily. Crisis averted.

"Darlin', if it's sweet, I'll eat it," Melchizedek said matter-of-factly, grinning a cheshire grin at Casia before considering the holiday. It sounded like too much work and still too much mush, and he was pretty sure he could definitely avoid most of it by virtue of being a pirate. Katrina and Hawkiss didn't celebrate it, as far as he knew. So he could just pass off anyone upset at him for not getting them anything by claiming ignorance of the holiday....but Keres would kill him and Casia would be sad or something.

"What's your favourite?" he asked, figuring that even if it weren't a surprise, she'd be happy he got her something.

"The candy hearts." Casia said instantly. "Most of the stuff here is just red and pink, but those are all sorts of fab colours." She smiled, and looked along the shelves. "Maybe I'll get youu..." Her gaze briefly alighted on the sad kittens, but with a mischievous grin, she shook her head. Not cool. Finally, she decided on something. "How about chocolate kisses? Those're probably easy to eat on the go." And Melchy was a pirate, so she fancied he'd be on the go a lot more than most people. "Now I still need to buy things for my other friends though." She frowned thoughtfully and realized with surprise that her list of other friends was far shorter than she had originally anticipated. One was dead, for starters. Another was hardly a friend, as he barely noticed her and the last time he had seen him had been ages ago. Keres, obviously she'd have to buy something for Keres, she was practically a best friend. And Merroth...

She wasn't sure Merroth counted. She had only met him once afterschool, after all. Sure, he'd been nice to her, and they'd gotten along, but they had only really met for about forty minutes or so. She looked up at Melchy concernedly. "How long do you think you have to know someone to be their friend?" Either way, she had a lot less shopping to do than she had thought.

Melchy liked her reasoning. It was colourful, therefore it was cool. While he didn't share her feelings on the hearts (he had tried them once before and thought most of them tasted a bit odd), he totally agreed that the more colourful candy was, the more exciting. Nodding, he swiped a box of those off the shelf and regarded the rest of it thoughtfully. His own gaze turned to the kittens. Keres had a cat, and that kind of reminded him of it. But...he wasn't sure if she'd kill him for giving her chocolate that looked like her cat or not.

"Chocolate kisses are my favourite type of chocolate," he answered when he realized that Casia was speaking, looking over at her almost seriously. "They're easier t'stuff in a bag 'er your pockets, yeah." Nodding sagely, he half-turned back to the shelves before Casia asked her final question. Looking at her and tilting his head, he frowned thoughtfully. "....Dunno," he said eventually.

"I guess I've got a good few people I'd be considering my mates, an' some of 'em I haven't met too many times." He shrugged. "Depends on whether 'er not you like 'em enough t'wanna see 'em again, I guess." He frowned thoughtfully. "Like....met a boy a while ago, he was pretty cool, I'd totally hang with him again. But met a girl th'other night, an' I couldn't care less what happens t'her." He shrugged. "I'd consider th'first a friend, and th'second's nothin' at all." He paused thoughtfully, wondering how many people he ought to buy candy for, if Carlisle counted as a friend. "But I'm only buyin' stuff for m'close friends," he added. "Jus' you an' Keres. You know Keres, aye? D'you have any idea what she'd like?"

Casia nodded slowly. "That makes sense." she agreed. Melchy would know the answer, of course. So did she want to see Merroth again?

Yeah. He had been confusing, but after they had gotten to talking with each other, they said everything wrong in a way that had felt strangely right. "I'll get him something too, then." she muttered, scanning the shelves and grabbing some of the least embarrassingly soppy looking chocolate. Snapping back to reality, she smiled widely. "Of course I know Keres!" she enthused. "I need to get her something too, let me think..." Tapping her chin, she examined the array. "Keres... Would like something pretty, maybe." she decided. The sphinx liked fashion and music a lot, but music was not a common Valentine's day theme. "Colours that match, too. Not this red and pink... Stuff." She was on firmer ground with Keres than anyone else. Though she knew Melchy and Keres pretty well, Keres was a girl. It made a difference.
PostPosted: Mon Feb 09, 2009 1:09 pm

"Um, Keres, you're sure?" Melchy asked, blinking at Casia and trying to get a handle on what she had just said. "Keres, like...Keres the sphinx girl Keres?" His lips began to form the words, 'The evil one?', but he cut himself short, instead simply gaping at Casia for a moment. She obviously knew a different Keres from his Keres. At least....he assumed she did. Because there was no way Keres was nice or pretty or...any of that stuff. She was evil incarnate. His best friend, yeah, but still evil incarnate.

"I get the feeling we met on entirely different grounds," Melchy decided aloud, watching Casia consider the display and then browsing for something that wouldn't be weird to give to Keres. He definitely wouldn't be getting her anything heart-shaped. She'd probably kill him or something.

"Yeah." Casia said, sounding faintly puzzled. Did she say something wrong? She dismissed it. Boys were weird, and much as she was fond of Melchy, he was still a boy. The sirenish side of her tended to naturally pity him just for that, even if the rest of her liked him. Boys could get perplexing, and despite having just discovered two thirds of her friends belonged in the category, she was still glad to be a girl. "Maybe." she agreed, and looked at the candy hearts. "I'll get Keres some candy hearts, too." she proclaimed. "They are pretty rad colours, after all." It was a fairly safe bet, and if she didn't like them they were good to do all sorts of things with, like throw at people.

She supposed that thought was a siren thought. It hadn't been very nice. She shook her head imperceptibly and mentally counted to ten before she thought anything else like it. Feeling better, Casia peered at the display to find something Melchy could give the sphinx. "How about," she picked up a box, "'Truffles'?" It was a funny sort of name for chocolate, and the sound of it reminded her of soft things and baby animals in a weird kind of way. Holding it up, she added "They look kind of nice. Fancy, you know?"
