A timid child. A whimpery child. A weak child.

Uddhava was many things but there was one thing that he was not and - ironically - that was the one thing that he should have been. A Firekin. He was not anything that a Firekin was considered to be. Brave, strong, fierce, he was not even red except for the splash of crimson in the fringe of his mane. His frame was not bulky or even podgy. He was wiry and lanky and walked with such an unsteady motion that it seemed the wind mind send him tumbling across the ground.

He'd been called Runt, Sunshine and many other things, but right now the name Tumbleweed seemed far more appropriate.

He was out and about today, leaving the shadow of Azarax's den to go...well...he didn't know where he was going, only that he needed to get a breather, he needed to think. He still cried himself to sleep at night, still couldn't understand how life had taken such a terrible turn, but he was putting up a slightly braver front now.

So, there he was, the small golden juvenile wobblign unsteadily across the sweep of golden sand.

Helios was starting to turn into something of a bully. He was caring less about others by the day. It was in the end what he wanted, to be emotionless, careless... all of that and be like his father but at the same time it felt weird. He no longer cared if he did something his mother wouldn't like. She was amazing but she wasn't good enough for his father to stick with which meant she wasn't good enough. As he was growing he seemed to make conclusions constantly on what he thought his father would do, which was leading to this. A youngster who wasn't sure about life.

He was wandering today, looking to show someone how weak they were. Helios had got to the point now where he wanted to, wished to show that everyone was weak and no one would be as strong as he. He wanted to show this to anyone who tried to challenge him. Maybe it was his luck then that he came across the runt. Everyone knew about him.

"Runt, what you doing about." He spoke rather viciously. He wasn't too bothered if he scared the runt or anything else. He had heard about the runt from his mother who had heard from some other lioness. He had been told to be nice to the runt but he was no firekin so why should he be nice?

Runt?

For a moment there he thought the voice belonged to his brother, Rap. He'd called him Runt, too, before he'd given him another name. However, the tone was different...colder...and when he turned he realised that this lion was a stranger. A mean one, at that.

The hope left his eyes and he cowered, pressing himself to the sand. For a moment it seemed like he wouldn't reply. And then he did, his little voice strangled.

"N-n-nothing. Just...walking."

He blinked. "You know my brother?"

Helios smirked as he obviously scared the cub. It was something that made him proud. He liked to feel that he had power over others. It seemed he really was changing as he grew.

"Walking? You aren't worthy to walk the desert." He snarled. His eyes watching the cub. He knew that if he was caught being this horrible that his mother would probably hand him over to her friend and he was slightly afraid of the white lioness. She scared him a little, she was just big and well... she was a true firekin he knew that and it scared him.

"No I don't know your brother. I know who he is but I don't know him." He spoke in a slightly more reasonable tone, less anger. Though he still wasn't being nice he was at least being a little more civil just because he knew if this got back to his mothers friend he would be in trouble and untill he grew a bit, he didn't want to face her.

Uddhava sniffed and rubbed a paw agaist his snout. He turned to face the other, bigger child and blinked cautiously. He was too afraid to do anything, move, run, or even attempt a smile - though the golden boy didn't smile very much.

His ears fell about his face and for a moment it seemed he wouldn't say anything in response. He liked silence, liked it to come and swallow him up, save him from this existance.

His mother had been silent and now she was gone. Sleeping for all eternity. Sometimes he wished he had gone to sleep at her side. Better that then facing people like this one everyday.

"W-why not?" He asked, knowing the answer before he'd asked it. He wasn't red. It was as simple as that. "Firekin are m-my family." He sniffed again.

"T-then you'd better not hurt me. M-my brother is s-strong. He'd t-tell you off."

Helios was amused.

"You belong to the other pride, you don't belong here." It wasn't because he wasn't red or anything like that. He was a traditionalist, he belonged to the others and if they had kicked him out he should have stayed kicked out.

"I'm not afraid of your brother." Helios wasn't kidding either, he cared very little about others in the pride he only feared his father and his mothers friends. Her friends they were rather scary.

"N-no I don't." Uddhava insisted. "They would have killed me. I was told. That's why I was brought here. I didn't belong there." He didn't belong here either, he knew it but he wouldn't say it. He didn't like this place very much. He yearned to be with his brothers and sisters and his father, too. But until he was big enough he had to stay here.

"You should be." He started to feel afraid now. Why would this cub not be scared? Uddhava backed up a step, intending on circling around the other and making a dash for it. "He's a General. Strongest lion around. He'd stomp you for being mean to me. He cares about me."

And he was the only one...Uddhava thought to himself. Azarax was the only one who understood, after all.

Helios just laughed.

"No one is stronger then my father." He stared at the cub, he would stand by that fact. His father was the strongest because he had trained for a long time. He would not believe anyone was stronger then his father.

"Ny would be the one who would hurt me if I hurt you. That's why I am not going to risk it. Your brother I am not scared of. Ny, well she is what mother calls a true firekin and knew your mother well or something." He stared at the cub, wondering why he didnt just leave anyway as it would probably do him more good being out there in the world then being stuck here where he obviously didn't belong. Though he knew that his mothers friend would probaly fight anyone who hurt this cub though he didn't know why.

"Well if that's true, why isn't your father the General instead then?" Uddhava shocked himself. The anger, the sudden desire to protect his brother was an unusual emotion and he was almost afraid of its burning tickle in his chest. Was this the part of him that was Firekin or was it normal to feel this way? Of course it was normal! Azarax was family.

He backed up a little, head down, ears drooped.

But he stopped as the cub continued and lifted his ears a little. "Ny?" The name was whispered and for a moment he seemed a little lost for words. "Who is Ny?" There was another here who knew his mother well? Who could tell him more about her? His heart ached and he knew he had to find her.

Helios chuckled. "Your brother was given that position out of sympathy!" He knew the stories of the war and well it seemed a good insult whether it was true or not.

The worst thing, the cub had caught onto Ny's name.

"Find her yourself runt." He wasn't about to get himself in more trouble by making it easy for the cub to find the white lioness. He could just imagine what would happen. First Ny would punish him, then she would tell his mother who would also punish him, then Anarore would find out he had been punished and laugh at him. He wasn't having that, not a chance.

He shrank back, afraid of the other's tone, afraid of his words and their sharpness. He didn't like this one, not one little bit. Now he wouldn't even tell him where to find this Ny! This Ny who knew his mother, who could tell him more about her.

His eyes filled with tears and they overwhelmed him. The drops welled, spilled over and trembled down his cheeks. "She knew Mama." His voice was quiet and hoarse. But he knew crying, begging would make no difference. This red lion was not going to help him.

Because he was not red.

He turned and fled, not once looking back.
