Ones I reccomend are Fruits Basket and The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Bleach
FLCL ( Fooly Cooly ) - its only 6 episodes long but its really funny
Dead Leaves - Movie from the makers of FLCL
Tekinomikreet - very artistic movie
Code Geass
Cowboy Bebop = Not your sterotypical anime
Outlaw Star - Kinda like Cowboy Bebop
Full Metal Alchemist - There's also a movie for it. But you'll need to watch the entire series ro understand the movie. The movie is AWESOME!
Ghost in The Shell
Eureka 7 - If your looking for a great love story/ futuristic anime
Trigun- Loved it
and that's all I can think of.

I also recommend Fruits Basket, but also Pokémon (duh xd ), Inuyasha, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Rurouni Kenshin... That's about it confused
Personally, I don't recommend Dragonball, but oh well, personal opinion xd stare

I don't watch much anime, but I do enjoy Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! (NOT GX or 5D), One Piece, and Kirby.
Recently I discovered a really cute one called Chi's Sweet Home, about a kitten who loses her mother and is taken in by an apartment-dwelling family. The episodes are really short (like 3 minutes each), and it's a good one if you're a fan of cats and cute stuff.

I must say though, I prefer a lot more uncommon anime. If you're after some action, then Read or Die is great (especially Read or Die TV). If you like funny shoujo (like I do) I'd recommend Onegai My Melody! If you like epic fantasy, then I recommend Good Witch of the West, Twelve Kingdoms and Scrapped Princess (the last less so though). And if you like funny stuff, I think Damekko Doubutsu and Ouran High School Host Club (finally, a popular thing!) are great.

Anime's I would reccomend...
One Piece- It is pretty funny but bad a** at the same time
Blaeach= Very overpopular, but it is soooo epic!
Bobobo Bobo Bo-Bo- VERY RANDOM, one of the best manga/anime in the world
Cyborg009- It's epic, enough said...
