Blushing fiercely, Kaimi clutched her bag and opened the door to the room where detention was being held. She'd never been in detention before, but apparently turning in an entirely blank math test and then getting defensive about it was enough to land her here. While Kaimi would never admit it, she had been acting out lately though she couldn't pinpoint why.
She frowned and bit her lip. At least in detention there were teachers around and enough people to keep her feeling more or less safe. Dumping her bag on a desk she let out a loud, irritable sigh and crossed her arms. She knew that she couldn't be the only kid who'd misbehaved in one way or another. Someone else had to be being punished today too. Kaimi wouldn't be able to live it down if she had to do detention alone.

"I swear I didn't mean to fall asleep, Mr. Deakon!" Kashmira said as she was gently pushed through the door. "It's just that Math is soooo boring! I wouldn't have fallen asleep if it weren't!"
"I know, I know," Tyler said, still relentlessly pushing her forward, although gently. "But that doesn't change the fact that you're in detention now."
Kash sighed. "And lucky Rhye gets to go to work with Dad, it's not fair," she complained half-heartedly.
"Kaimi," Tyler said with a slight smile for the teenager. "I don't know if we've met officially, I'm Mr. Deakon. I'm in charge of tonight's detention."

With her penchant for rarely going to class, Kaimi wasn't sure if she'd met him before or not. Probably not. She muttered something awkward under her breath, torn between meekness and rebellion. "Nicetameetcha." Her gaze slid over to Kash. At least she knew Kash. And she liked Kash. She was even wearing the scarf the other girl had gotten her. "Hey Kash."

"Kaimi!" Kash said, cheering right up. "You grew!" Then she grinned. "You look cute!"
"Now, usually," Tyler said, "There's more kids in here, but it looks like you two are the only ones I've got. That means you can choose, either you stay here and write lines for an hour, or you come with me while I restock the vending machines."
"Vending machines!" Kash said straight away. Obviously she was used to these choices. She spent a lot of time in detention, after all. It was her luck. And bad habit of falling asleep in classes, of course.

"Thanks." Kaimi responded with a little half-smile when Kash complimented her growth. She was starting to realize that maybe she should pay more attention to it, because apparently she was pretty. "Vending machines, I guess." She added. Kaimi hadn't ever done detention before but she figured that Kash knew what she was doing.
As they started down the hallway, Kaimi hung back so she'd have a chance to talk under her breath with Kash. "What are you in for?" She asked in a stage whisper.

"The usual," Kash said. "I fell asleep in math class again. It's just I get dizzy from the numbers and have to sit down, and one thing leads to another--"
"Ladies, if you'd be so good to help me carry a few boxes to the vending machines," Tyler said as they entered the kitchen. There were stacks of boxes filled with chips and candy on the median, which he started doling out, grabbing the pop, himself. "If you do this well I might even be talked into letting you go early."
"Mr. Deakon's Chris's dad," Kash said. She wasn't even bothering to whisper. "Where is Chris, anyway?" she asked Tyler.
"On a trip to another planet at the moment," Tyler said. "Have you met Chris, Kaimi?"

Nodding, Kaimi took a box. She was stronger than she looked and it didn't seem to give her any trouble. "Chris was my secret santa. I baked him some stuff. He's nice..." She studied Tyler carefully now that she knew he was Chris's dad. Maybe he'd know about the excorsism stuff. He was also good looking and... Shocked at herself, Kaimi blushed furiously at the unbidden thought and shoved it out of her head. "Numbers make me dizzy too." Kaimi said, turning to Kash with a sympathetic look. "They just dont make any sense."

"You should think of them in shopping terms," Tyler said as he led them to the vending machines. "It's how my wife does it."
"Really?" Kash said. "But what's math got to do with shopping?" She wasn't stupid, she just didn't take the time to equate one of her LEAST favorite past times with one of her favorite!

"Like, balancing your checkbook and stuff?" Kaimi asked. In truth, she got the basics of math. She just didn't enjoy it and, as she rarely went to school, she was pathetically behind. It was easier to just play dumb, since she didn't see the point in math anyways. It was tedious.

"That and bargain shopping," Tyler agreed. "She spends hours going from one store to another making sure she doesn't spend as much money as she would have going to one." There was a hint of amusement in his voice, as if he still didn't get that type of womanly logic. "Often going back to the store she went to first."
"You gotta get more bang for your buck!" Kash said, agreeing with his wife's theory for shopping. And she obviously had heard that saying on TV before. "And sometimes you're looking for a certain type of hat, but one store has a better looking one than the other, and you can't chance buying the first one in case that's true!"

"I guess I'm not great at bargain shopping." Well, shopping in general. She didn't do a whole lot of it because Naomi always took her to buy her clothes and things and Kaimi's allowance wasn't very big. And she'd been ferreting it away to save up for firedancing sticks. She sat the box down as they came to the first vending machine and watched Tyler expectantly. At least this detention didn't seem so bad so far. At least she was with people.

He pulled out his keys and unlocked the machines, letting the fronts open like doors. "Now, open the boxes and separate the snacks by types, would you?" he said as he went to work on the coke machine.
Kash did as he said, sorting out the candy into piles as she sat on the ground. That was when Tyler spoke again. "Chris said your snake was a problem?" he asked her.
Kash jerked, a look of guilt crossing her face. "Kind of," she admitted. "He told you?"
"Just a bit."

Flopping to the ground by Kash, Kaimi helped sort out the candy, kind of wishing that she could steal one of the twix bars. She was kind of hungry... More or less content to let Kash and Tyler chatter on, her interest was piqued when they mentioned a snake. "You have a snake?" Kaimi asked curiously.

"Um, kind of," Kash said, tugging the armband off and showing it to Kaimi. It didn't move, and she almost yelled at him for pretending to be an accessory, but wasn't feeling up to it. "His name is Bastian. He's bad luck."
"Chris said that Antony was really interested in them," Tyler said. "Have you told your parents about it?"
"No?" Kash offered, flushing at that. "But he hasn't done anything--"

"Bad luck?" Kaimi examined the piece of jewelry. It was very pretty... "Is it cursed or something?" She asked. Flora and Ficus were murmurring things alarmingly in her ear, but she was ignoring them.
