My old director from last year would give us something and say "play it," with the exception of 1 piece that was too hard for us.
The director I have now gives us close to 5-6 pieces and asks for feedback on whether we like them or not. We only play 3 or 4 per concert so, in my opinion, it's a waste of paper. On the other hand, it's nice to have some say in what we'll be playing for 1-3 months.
So my questions are, how does your director choose music and do you like the way s/he does it?

He'll usually give us multiple pieces and we just end up playing whichever ones we play. It's usually feedback-based but not always. Right now we're rehearsing for festival season so we have a variety.

Generally, he gives us an option. He goes on J.W. Pepper and plays all the stuff for us and we vote.
But nobody ever votes for the stuff I like...(I like pops pieces)

our director gives us 2 pieces. whichever one sounds better after 1-2 weeks, we keep and the other our drum major picks up. we get a new one, so now we have 1 of the original 2 and 1 new one. this goes on until we have about 4 or 3 decent pieces that we can play. (how many depends on the length of the songs) and they're always hard songs, but we manage! some of the other students would rather have a say im sure, but considering about maybe 8-10 of us actually care to try out of the 30 or so total in our band, im glad our director picks for us. it works and we do well with what he does cause he knows what we're capable of playing. so it all works out!

Our band director hands out originals and has us sightread about 5, then chooses 3.

It's hard to explain. He gives us sight reading, and asks our opinion, but I guess he doesn't really care because we tell him that it's too easy, but he doesn't care.

♫ He usually hands us the music, and has us all sightread it. If it still sounds horrible after a few days, he'll cancel that song and move on to another one.
Rarely will he actually ask us whether we like it or not. =P

He gives us music. We can't chose. D: The first piece was/is horrible, Legend of The Alhambra. D: I LOVE the 2nd, Prelude to a Festival. The 3rd piece is okay.. Which is The Wild Westerns!
But I think were playing harder songs sooner, which I am happy about. :]

My BD gives us pieces that she thinks we will like. Usually they are things that she likes and we end up enjoying. She rarely asks us what we think of them but they are all great pieces like Fortress by Frank Ticheli. She only asks us if we really want to play the music if after weeks of practice the piece doesn't sound any better.
